  • Various MEMS accelerometers are used in engineering applications including automobiles, mobile phones, military systems, and electronic devices. Among them, the thermal accelerometer employing the temperature difference induced by the convective flow inside the micro cavity has been a topic of interest. As the convective sensor does not utilize a solid proof mass, it is compact, lightweight, inexpensive to manufacture, sensitive and highly endurable to mechanical shock. However, the complexity of the convective flow and various design constraints make optimization of a device a crucial step before fabrication. In this work, optimization of a 2-axis thermal convective MEMS accelerometer is conducted based on 3-dimensional numerical simulation. Parametric studies are performed by varying the several design variables such as the heater shape/size, the cavity size and types of the gas medium and the position of temperature probes in the sensor. The results of optimal design are presented.

  • Roll to roll (R2R) system, known as 'web processing', is the process of producing these electronic devices on a roll of flexible plastic. With the need of improved performance and productivity in R2R industry, effective control and on-line supervision for web quality is essential. In this report, we present a system for on-line measurement of wrinkles, one of defects incurring due to compressive stresses developed in the web. This system is able to capture an image generated when a well defined line shape laser beam passes through a transparent web. The system calculates 3D shape information, including the height of the wrinkle on the web, and displays the images for the shape information of the web in real time. By using area scan camera and machine vision laser, this system takes more advantages of setting up as a simple and low cost system compared to the line scan camera systems that widely used in web manufacturing. Specific calibration method and analysis on the achievable accuracy will be discussed.

  • As an important key technology using on electronic devices, face recognition has become one of the hottest technology recently. The traditional BP Neural network has a strong ability of self-learning, adaptive and powerful non-linear mapping but it also has disadvantages such as slow convergence speed, easy to be traversed in the training process and easy to fall into local minimum points. So we come up with an algorithm based on BP neural network but also combined with the PCA algorithm and other methods such as the elastic gradient descent method which can improve the original network to try to improve the whole recognition efficiency and has the advantages of both PCA algorithm and BP neural network.

  • Double random phase encryption (DRPE) is one of the well-known optical encryption techniques, and many techniques with DRPE have been developed for information security. However, most of these techniques may not solve the fundamental security problem caused by using fixed phase masks for DRPE. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a key phase mask updating scheme for DRPE to improve its security, where a spatial light modulator (SLM) is used to implement key phase mask updating. In the proposed scheme, updated key data are obtained by using previous image data and the first phase mask used in encryption. The SLM with the updated key is used as the second phase mask for encryption. We provide a detailed description of the method of encryption and decryption for a DRPE system using the proposed key updating scheme, and simulation results are also shown to verify that the proposed key updating scheme can enhance the security of the original DRPE.

  • In IEEE 802.15.1 (Bluetooth) Ad-hoc networks, the frequency is resolved by the specific part of the digits of the Device clock and the Bluetooth address of the Master device in a given piconet. The piconet performs a fast frequency hopping scheme over 79 carriers of 1-MHz bandwidth. Since there is no coordination between different piconets, packet collisions may occur if two piconets are located near one another. In this paper, we proposed a software/hardware co-design of an adaptive frequency decision mechanism so that more than two different kinds of wireless devices can stay connected without frequency collision. Suggested method was implemented with C program and HDL (Hardware Description Language) and automatically synthesized and laid out. The adaptive frequency hopping circuit was implemented in a prototype and showed its operation at 24MHz correctly.

  • The critical thickness of an epitaxial film on a substrate in electronic or optoelectronic devices is studied on the basis of equilibrium dislocation analysis. Two geometric models, a single dislocation and an array of dislocations in heteroepitaxial system, are considered respectively to calculate the misfit dislocation formation energy. The isotropic linearly elastic stress fields for the models are obtained by means of complex potential method combined with alternating technique, and are used for calculating the formation energies. As a result, the effect of elastic mismatch between film and substrate on critical thickness is presented and $Si_xGe_{1-x}/Si$ epitaxial structure is analyzed to predict the critical thickness with varying germanium concentration.

  • The capillary pumped cooling system (CPCS) is a cooling system which controls temperature of the small electronic devices, such as IC device systems, notebook computers, etc. An important feature of CPCS is that a working fluid circulates in a system by capillary force in tubes instead of mechanical input power. The cooling effect of CPCS is investigated with respect to heat flux, condensation temperature under different working fluids (water, ethanol, methanol). Capillary pumped flows are visualized under various conditions and mass flow rate and temperature are experimentally measured. It is shown that the increasing tendency of mass flux for each working fluid is observed as the temperature of evaporator increases, and that the cooling possibility of CPCS depends on the performance of evaparator and condenser which sustains the steady state temperature continuously.

  • Transparent and top emission organic light-emitting device (OLEDs) are the important issues in realizing new display applications such as see-through electronic displays, and flexible displays. The cathode of the transparent and top emission OLEDs should be transparent in the visible light and should not give any damage to the underlying organic layers, in addition to its intrinsic role of injecting electrons into the organic layers. Several authors have investigated the transparent conducting oxide films prepared by sputtering methods. They have introduced the sophisticated sputtering process for reducing the damages. Other groups have developed thermally evaporated transparent cathodes which are believed to be damage free without causing any permanent defect to the organic layers. This review focuses on the vacuum evaporated damage free transparent cathodes.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNT)-metal contacts play an important role in nanoelectronics applications such as field-effect transistor (FET) devices. Using Al and (10,0) CNT, we have recently showed that the CNT-metal contacts mediated via topological defects within CNT exhibits intrinsically low contact resistance, thanks to the preservation of the sp2 bonding network at the metal-CNT contacts.[1] It is well-established that metals with good wetting property such as Pd consistently yield good contacts to both metallic and semiconducting CNTs. In this work, the electronic and charge transport properties of the interfaces between capped CNT and Pd will be investigated based on first-principles computations and compared with previous results obtained for the Al electrodes.
