Adverse Events of Electronic Moxibustion Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis: Case Reports and a Literature Review

  • Background: Electronic moxibustion has the advantage of temperature control and maintenance, and overcomes the limitations of the existing moxibustion process without the use of the combustion process. However, as the application of electronic moxibustion in clinical practice has increased, safety issues are emerging. Methods: Clinical cases of electronic moxibustion treatment for knee osteoarthritis where burns occurred were collected. In addition, adverse events reported in clinical studies using electronic moxibustion for patients with knee osteoarthritis were collected from studies retrieved from Korean and international databases. Results: There were 3 cases of superficial 2nd degree burns retrospectively collected through chart reviews. Among the selected 5 studies for literature review, 2 studies reported adverse events which were burns milder than those reported in these 3 cases in this retrospective case review. Conclusion: Since the risk of superficial 2nd degree burn was discovered in the cases reviewed, further research on safe electronic moxibustion treatment is required without compromising the effectiveness of moxibustion.

Implementation of Intelligent Electronic Acupuncture Needles Based on Bluetooth

  • In this paper, we present electronic acupuncture needles we have developed using intelligence technology based on Bluetooth in order to allow anyone to simply receive customized remote diagnosis and treatment by clicking on the menu of the smartphone regardless of time and place. In order to determine the health condition and disease of patients, we have developed a software and a hardware of electronic acupuncture needles, operating on Bluetooth which transmits biometric data to oriental medical doctors using the functions of automatically determining pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis, and oxygen saturation; the functions are most commonly used in herbal treatment. In addition, using fuzzy logic and reasoning based on smartphones, we present in this paper an algorithm and the results of completion of hardware implementation for electronic acupuncture needles, appropriate for the body conditions of patients; the algorithm and the hardware implementation are for a treatment time duration by electronic acupuncture needles, an automatic determinations of pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis, and oxygen saturation, a function implementation for automatic display of acupuncture point, and a strength adjustment of electronic acupuncture needles. As a result of our simulation, we have shown that the treatment of patients, performed using an Electronic Acupuncture Needles based on intelligence, is more efficient compared to the treatment that was performed before.

  • In this paper, we study about a acupuncture point and a non-acupuncture point resistance characteristics for acupuncture research. For this study, we devised resistance variation measurement system. This system is consist of 4-channel skin resistance measuring parts, filters, 12bit A/D convertor, 8051 micro-controller, and personal computer The developed system insert a low current to skin and obtains voltages from standard resistor that is convected to measurement circuit in series. The obtained voltage is converted to 12bit digital signal. Therefore the converted signal is changed to skin resistance by calculation in the personal computer. As the results of experiment, the resistance of acupuncture point and non-acupuncture point are different from each other. The acupuncture point has very fast current flows than the other non- acupuncture point.

연소식 구(灸)치료와 전자식 구(灸)치료의 선호도에 대한 비교연구 (The Comparative Study on Preference of Combustible Moxibustion and Electronic Moxibustion)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is reporting to compare the preference of combustible moxibustion and electronic moxibustion. Methods : 31 patients were treated by combustible moxibustion in the morning and electronic moxibustion in the afternoon for 1 day. After they were treated by each moxibustions treatment, filled out questionnaire. We repeated the above process for 3 days. And we analyzed questionnaire statistically. Results : Heat sensitivity of electronic moxibustion has statistical significance. Sex and age have no statistical significances. Heat sensitivity and persistency of combustible moxibustion, heat persistency of electronic moxibustion also have no statistical significances. Satisfaction and smoke of moxibustion have correlation to moxibustion preference. Conclusions : Heat sensitivity of electronic moxibustion, satisfaction and smoke of moxibustion have correlation to moxibustion preference.

  • Objectives: This research aimed to develop a guideline for evaluating safety and performance of electronic warm-acupuncture apparatus. With the development of medical devices like electronic warm-acupuncture apparatus with improved performance, convenience and safety measures compared to traditional warm-acupuncture needling, safety and performance guideline is a necessity. Methods: By referring to existing standards and guidelines of other electronic devices for Korean medicine with heating function, guideline for safety and performance assessment of electronic warm-acupuncture apparatus was drafted Results: The guideline, presents explanation for adequate temperature and settings of the apparatus, and safety measurements providing against thermal runaway situations along with guidelines for the manual. Guideline for detailed test method for the performance of the apparatus such as accuracy of temperature increase and the timer, and safety unit was also provided. The test items and suggested test methods for the requirements of biological, electrical and electromagnetic safety were referred to Korean approval documents of ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Conclusion: We proposed the relevant items to verify performance and safety of warm-acupuncture apparatus to assure patient safety and improve the quality of currently developing devices for application in clinical field.

척추관협착증에 있어서 침과 뜸 자극에 의한 체열 변화의 정량적 해석에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Quantity Analysis to the Heat Variation for the Stenosis of the Lumber by the Acupuncture-Moxa Cautery Stimulations)

  • Objectives This study is on the quantifying method for the acupuncture-moxa cautery heat response index, which are based on the some definitions. Methods The magnitude of the acupuncture-moxa cautery is defined by the pain-feeling of the acupuncture-moxa cautery stimulation: the stimulation magnitude of the acupuncture is 1, that of the direct moxa-cautery is 2, and that of the indirect moxa-cautery is 0.5. The heat variation of the acupuncture-moxa cautery stimulation is defined by the heat variations of the characteristic points pre/post-stimulations in the stenosis of the lumber. The acupuncture-moxa cautery heat response index is defined by the ratio of between the magnitude of the heat variation and the natural logarithmic magnitude of the stimulation. Results With the respect of the acupuncture-moxa cautery heat response index, I experimented and estimated 4 types of stimulations in the stenosis of the lumber: the single acupuncture stimulation with 40%, the single direct moxa-cautery stimulation with 52%, the combinational acupuncture-moxa cautery stimulations with 27%, and the combinational acupuncture-indirect electronic moxa-cautery stimulations with 53%. Conclusions According to the acupuncture-moxa cautery heat response index. the combinational acupuncture-moxa cautery stimulations especially need to be changed to the combinational acupuncture-indirect electronic moxa-cautery stimulations.

  • 전자 침은 환자의 신체 상태 및 치료 상태를 동시에 분석함으로써 환자를 침술 기법으로 치료할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 다중 패드에 내장 된 전자 바늘 알고리즘을 제안하고 개발 하였다. 특별히, 환자의 건강 상태에 맞는 최적의 전자침 강도 자동 계산, 감지 패드 및 DSP 시스템을 사용한 전자침 제어 알고리즘을 구현 하였다. 뿐만 아니라, 본 논문에서는 환자의 개인 생체신호 정보를 수신 할 수 있는 SW 및 HW 시제품을 개발하여서, WEB 기반에서 멀티 ARRAY형 전지침 시술을 받을 수 있는 SW 및 HW 시제품을 개발 하였다.

  • 한의학에서는, 한의사가 환자의 질병 상태를 판단하기위해서, 환자의 혀 상태를 관찰 하는 것을 중요하게 사용한다. 본 논문에서는, 한방 치료에서 가장 많이 사용 하고 있는 맥진 및 설진 방법을 이용하여서 스마트폰 기반 한방 전자 침을 개발 하였다. 기존의 주관적인 진단을 객관화 및 과학화 하고자 한다. 뿐만 아니라, 한의원에서, 잘못된 진단 없는 객관적인 판단을 하도록 하였다. 본 논문에서는, 스마트폰 기반에서, 퍼지 논리와 추론을 사용하여 환자의 건강 상태 자동 판단 및 지능형 전자침 키트를 완성하였다. 모의실험 결과 지능을 이용한 전자침이 기존의 방법보다 효율적인 것을 입증하였다.

뇌졸중후 우울증 침치료의 임상연구에 대한 고찰 (Study of Clinical Research Acupuncture Treatment on Post-stroke Depression)

  • The aim of this study is to collect and analyze clinical studies on acupuncture therapies of Post-stroke depression, and to suggest a method on study about acupuncture therapies. In this thesis, electronic searches were performed. Also, 6 major journals associated with oriental medicine in Korea were searched manually. Through searching, 27 studies were selected and analyzed. There were 24 controlled studies and 3 non-controlled studies. Treatment methods were acupuncture, electronic-acupuncture, eye-acupuncture, abdominal-acupuncture and pharmaco-puncture. The percentages of these treatment method were 59.2%, 29.6%, 3.7%, 3.7% and 3.7%, respectively. Acupuncture points such as GV20, PC6, ST36, SP6, LV3, GV24, GV26, LI14, LI11, H7, ST40, GB20, GB34 and LI15 were used. In comparison of results before and after acupuncture treatment, there were statistically significant improvement in 26 studies. Based on the results from above, the studies on acupuncture for Post-stroke depression needs to be standardized and more appropriate high-quality study models should be introduced.
