  • ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) is new optical measuring method to be able to measure the surface deformations of engineering components and materials in industrial areas. Conventional measuring method of surface deformation such as the strain gauge have many demerits because it is contact and point-to-point measuring one. But ESPI that is non-contact, whole field measuring method can overcome previous disadvantages. The speckle pattern to be formed with interference phenomena of scattering light from rough surfaces illuminated by laser light have phase information of surface In this study we used this interference phenomena and the phase shifting method to measure the in- plane deformation, together with the use of digital equipment to process the information contained in the speckle pattern and to display consequent inter ferograms. Finally we obtained good agreement between the experimenta results and those of FEM..

  • In this research, we accomplished the interpreting about the vibration of the object, which is the out of plane displacement in the Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI), one of the optical measuring technique. The vibrating object has a inherent nodal line, therefore we can get the information about the vibration of the object by interpreting it. we used a speaker and a cantilever plate for a measurement object, and interpreted it qualitatively by using the Time-Average ESPI. In this experimental result, the speaker has the lower mode of fringe at 550Hz, 570mV, and the higher mode of fringe at 950Hz, 570mV This ESPI is a non-destructive test, and because of using the laser at measuring, it has a high resolution. The ESPI can test vibration mode regardless of the test object size, because the area which illuminated laser is the test area.

  • This paper describes the variations of resonance frequencies and vibration mode shapes of laser welded cold rolled carbon steel plate(SCP1) induced by thermal loading during laser welding processing. The characteristics of those are analyzed with stroboscopic ESPI. Electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) that the electronic processes were added to SPI is one of the very powerful method in the experimental vibration analysis field. Stroboscopic ESPI to make it reliable are compared with theory and experimental method: Finite Element Method(FEM) and Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer(SLDV). The results of stroboscopic ESPI are well agreed with SLDV and also the comparison with theory give good agrement within $5\%$.

  • Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) has been recently developed and widely used because it has the advantage of being able to measure surface deformations of engineering components and materials in industrial areas without contact. The speckle patterns formed with interference and scattering phenomena can measure not only the out-of-plane but also the in-plane deformations. Digital image equipment processes the information included in the speckle patterns and displays the consequent interferogram on a computer monitor. In this study, the experimental results of a canti-levered plate using ESPI were compared with those obtained from the simple beam theory. The ESPI results of the canti-levered plate, analyzed by 4-step phase shifting method, are close to the theoretical expectation. Similarly, out-of-plane displacements of a spot welded canti-levered plate were also measured by ESPI with 4-step phase shifting technique. The phase map of the spot welded canti-levered plate is quite different from that of the canti-levered plate without spot welding.

  • Residual stress is one of the causes which make defects in engineering components and materials. Many methods have been developing to measure the residual stress. Though these methods provide the information of the residual stress, they also have disadvantage like a little damage, time consumption, etc. In this paper, we devised a new experimental technique to measure residual stress in materials with a combination of laser speckle pattern interferometry and spot heating. The speckle pattern interferometer measures in-plane deformation during the heat provides for much localized stress relief. 3-D shape is used for determining heat temperature and other parameters. The residual stresses are determined by the amount of strain that is measured subsequent to the heat and cool-down of the region being interrogated. A simple model is presented to provide a description of the method. In this paper, we could experimentally confirm that residual stress can be measured by using laser interferometry and spot heating method.

  • Optical-fiber electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) is a non-contact, non-destructive examination technique with the advantages of rapid measurement, high accuracy, and full-field measurement. The optical-fiber ESPI system used in this study was compact and portable with the advantages of easy set-up and signal acquisition. By suitably configuring the optical-fiber ESPI system, producing an image signal in a charge-coupled device camera, and periodically modulating beam phases, we obtained phase information from the speckle pattern using a four-step phase shifting algorithm. Moreover, we compared the actual defect size with that of interference fringes which appeared on a screen after calculating the pixel value according to the distance between the object and the CCD camera. Conventional methods of measuring defects are time-consuming and resource-intensive because the estimated values are relative. However, our simple method could quantitatively estimate the defect length by carrying out numerical analysis for obtaining values on the X-axis in a line profile. The results showed reliable values for average error rates and a decrease in the error rate with increasing defect length or pressure.

  • In this paper, both experimental measurement and theoretical analysis are used to investigate the out-of-plane resonant characteristics of a cantilevered piezoceramic plate in air and three different kinds of fluid. The experimental method, amplitude-fluctuation electronic speckle pattern interferometry (AF-ESPI), is the major technique used in this study to measure the resonant characteristics of the cantilivered piezoceramic plate. Both resonant frequencies and full-field mode shapes are obtained from this experimental technique. Numerical computations based on the finite element analysis are presented for comparison with the experimental results. Good quality of mode shapes for the cantilevered piezoceramic plate in air is obtained from the AF-ESPI technique. However, the quality decreases as the viscosity of fluids increases. From the results provided from experimental measurements and numerical computations, it is indicated that the resonant frequencies of the cantilevered piezoceramic plate in fluid decrease with the increase of the viscosity of fluids. Good agreements between the experimental measured data and the numerical calculated results are found for both resonant frequencies and mode shapes of the cantilevered piezoceramic plate in fluid.

  • A field theoretical approach to deformation and fracture of solid-state material is outlined, and its application to diagnosis of deformational status of metal specimens is discussed. Being based on a fundamental physical principle known as local symmetry, this approach is intrinsically scale independent, and capable of describing all stages of deformation on the same theoretical foundation. This capability enables us to derive criteria that can be used to diagnose transitions from the elastic to plastic regime, and the plastic to fracturing regime. For practical applications of these criteria, an optical interferometric technique known as electronic speckle-pattern interferometry is proved to be quite powerful; it is able to visualize the criteria as a whole image of the object on a real-time basis without numerical processing. It is demonstrated that this method is able to reveal loading hysteresis as well.
