  • Relay system is a promising technique for the high downlink throughput or coverage extension in the next generation wireless systems. In this paper, the transmit scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based relay system with hierarchical modulation is designed. Without using much power from the base station, the proposed scheme can guarantee the cell edge users to get high data rates as the inner cell users. In the simulation, the performance of proposed scheme was compared with the conventional one in which there is no hierarchical modulation. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme can save much power whether the unicast case or multicast case.

  • Cooperative forwarding has shown a substantial network performance improvement compared to traditional routing in multi-hop wireless network. To further enhance the system throughput, especially in the presence of highly congested multiple cross traffic flows, a promising way is to incorporate the multi-radio multi-channel (MRMC) capability into cooperative forwarding. However, it requires to jointly address multiple issues. These include radio-channel assignment, routing metric computation, candidate relay set selection, candidate relay prioritization, data broadcasting over multi-radio multi-channel, and best relay selection using a coordination scheme. In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient cluster-based cooperative data forwarding (CCDF) which jointly addresses all these issues. We study the performance impact when the same candidate relay set is being used for multiple cross traffic flows in the network. The network simulation shows that the CCDF with MRMC not only retains the advantage of receiver diversity in cooperative forwarding but also minimizes the interference, which therefore further enhances the system throughput for the network with multiple cross traffic flows.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient macrodiversity handover (MDHO) technique for time-division-based interference-limited IEEE 802.16j multihop wireless relay networks. In the proposed MDHO, when the diversity set members of the mobile station (MS) are a base station (BS) and relay station (RS), the MS receives the signal transmitted by the BS in the first phase. During the second phase, it also receives the simultaneous transmissions of the BS and RS. Furthermore, when the diversity set members are two RSs or two BSs, the MS receives only the simultaneous transmissions of the diversity set members. The superiority of the proposed MDHO is validated using analytical and simulation results. The performance analysis metrics are the average downlink (DL) carrier to interference and noise ratio (CINR), the average DL spectral efficiency, and the average service outage probability. Evaluation results show that the proposed MDHO significantly outperforms the conventional MDHO. The CINR gain achieved using the proposed MDHO is 4.71 dB compared to the conventional MDHO.

  • Due to the wide application of fifth generation communication, wireless sensor networks have become an indispensable part in our daily life. In this paper, we analyze physical layer security for two-way relay with energy harvesting (EH), where power splitter is considered at relay. And two kinds of combined methods, i.e., selection combining (SC) and maximum ratio combining (MRC) schemes, are employed at eavesdropper. What's more, the closed-form expressions for security performance are derived. For comparison purposes, this security behaviors for orthogonal multiple access (OMA) networks are also investigated. To gain deeper insights, the end-to-end throughput and approximate derivations of secrecy outage probability (SOP) under the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime are studied. Practical Monte-Carlo simulative results verify the numerical analysis and indicate that: i) The secure performance of SC scheme is superior to MRC scheme because of being applied on eavesdropper; ii) The secure behaviors can be affected by various parameters like power allocation coefficients, transmission rate, etc; iii) In the low and medium SNR region, the security and channel capacity are higher for cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems in contrast with OMA systems; iv) The systematic throughput can be improved by changing the energy conversion efficiency and power splitting factor. The purpose of this study is to provide theoretical direction and design of secure communication.

  • In this paper, we evaluated the performance of D2D advertisement dissemination algorithms with maximum-distance and transmission-efficiency based relay selections with respect to the total number of successfully received users and transmission efficiency. To assume more practical environment, we took into account pre-defined target-areas based on the information of user density and the limit for the maximum number of relay users. Through the simulations we compared the performance results of both D2D advertisement dissemination algorithms with maximum-distance and transmission-efficiency based relay selections according to increment of the number of sectors. And then, we analysed the superiority of algorithm with transmission-efficiency based relay selections more than maximum-distance based relay selections.

  • This paper considers a scenario that more D2D users exist in the cell, they compete for cellular resources to increase their own data rates, which may cause transmission interference to cellular users (CU) and the unfairness of resource allocation. We design a resource allocation scheme for selfish D2D users assisted by cooperative relay technique which is used to further enhance the users' transmission rates, meanwhile guarantee the QoS requirement of the CUs. Two transmission modes are considered for D2D users: direct transmission mode and cooperative relay transmission mode, both of which reuses the cellular uplink frequency resources. To ensure the fairness of resource distribution, Nash bargaining theory is used to determine the transmission mode and solve the bandwidth allocation problem for D2D users choosing cooperative relay transmission mode, and coalition formation game theory is used to solve the uplink frequency sharing problem between D2D users and CUs through a new defined "Selfish order". Through theoretical analysis, we obtain the closed Nash bargaining solution under CUs' rate constraints, and prove the stability of the formatted coalition. Simulation results show that the proposed resource allocation approach achieves better performance on resource allocation fairness, with only little sacrifice on the system sum rates.

  • In this paper, we investigate the throughput capacity of a multi-hop relay with cognitive radio (CR) enabled relay stations (RS). We suggest a TDMA/FDMA based frame structure where RSs dynamically select unused channels to communicate with the base station (BS) using CR techniques to analyze the throughput capacity. We develop the throughput capacity model for the proposed system based on utilization factor. The analytical results based on those equations show significant improvement in throughput capacity for CR enabled multi-hop relay system.

  • Previous research results indicated that the designed current reduction device could effectively reduce the sheath circulating current and that its RDP protection device could shield it against both fault and lightning strokes. In this paper, cable impedance is analyzed using wavelet analysis and distance relay algorithm following the installation of these devices so that the operation of distance relay can be estimated. The test results confirm that in these devices, the fault inception angle and SVL bonding types have no impact on the change of cable impedance. In other words, the conventional distance relay can be used without a new relay setting. Thus we can finally assert that the designed current reduction device and its protection device are effective and can be safely installed on the cable transmission system without disturbance.

  • In this paper, characteristics of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems using magnetically coupled resonance scheme with relay coils are investigated and modeled. Especially, asymmetric frequency splitting characteristics in over-coupled region of WPT with relays are measured and accurately modeled. Transmitter, receiver, and relay coils are modeled with R, L, C equivalent circuits. Using these circuit models and mutual inductances between coils, a WPT system is described with a linear matrix equation. For under-coupled region, a matrix is simplified considering only mutual inductances between adjacent coils. An analytical transfer characteristic of WPT system vs. distance is extracted using an inverse matrix that is acquired by Gauss elimination method for the simplified matrix. For over-coupled region, a matrix considering mutual inductances between non-adjacent coils is used to predict a frequency splitting characteristics accurately. A 6.3MHz WPT system with relay coils is implemented and measured. An accuracy of the model is investigated by comparing the output of the model with the measured results.

  • Cooperative networks enhance the performance of communication systems by combining received signals from the several relay nodes where the source node transmits signals to relay nodes. In this paper, we analyze the effect of resource allocation in cooperative networks. We assume that the cooperative networks use the conventional modulation scheme between the source and relay nodes, and adopt space-time code between the relays and destination node. Both the synchronous and differential modulations are applied for the conventional scheme and differential modulation is used for the space-time code. We consider relay location and energy allocation for resource allocation, and the performance of cooperative networks depending on the number of relay is also investigated.
