Energy Efficient and Low-Cost Server Architecture for Hadoop Storage Appliance

  • This paper proposes the Lempel-Ziv 4(LZ4) compression accelerator optimized for scale-out servers in data centers. In order to reduce CPU loads caused by compression, we propose an accelerator solution and implement the accelerator on an Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA) as heterogeneous computing. The LZ4 compression hardware accelerator is a fully pipelined architecture and applies 16 dictionaries to enhance the parallelism for high throughput compressor. Our hardware accelerator is based on the 20-stage pipeline and dictionary architecture, highly customized to LZ4 compression algorithm and parallel hardware implementation. Proposing dictionary architecture allows achieving high throughput by comparing input sequences in multiple dictionaries simultaneously compared to a single dictionary. The experimental results provide the high throughput with intensively optimized in the FPGA. Additionally, we compare our implementation to CPU implementation results of LZ4 to provide insights on FPGA-based data centers. The proposed accelerator achieves the compression throughput of 639MB/s with fine parallelism to be deployed into scale-out servers. This approach enables the low power Intel Atom processor to realize the Hadoop storage along with the compression accelerator.

  • This paper is a study on integrated air-conditioning system for 1-ton class commercial vehicle based on electric vehicle. In the case of an electric commercial vehicle, since the opening and closing of the door is frequently performed in order to get in and out of the cargo, the heat loss largely occurs. Therefore, the heating and cooling load is required to be larger than the electric vehicle. As a result, the energy consumed by the heating and cooling system is larger than the passenger electric car in order to satisfy the heat comfort required by passengers. In order to overcome these disadvantages, we performed research using an efficient integrated air conditioning system. Finally, the design and analysis of a heat pump system for heating and a electrical compressor for cooling need to be proceed to develop a high-efficiency air conditioning system for improving the commerciality of 1 ton-class electric trucks and expanding the industrial ecosystem in the electric truck sector.

An Empirical Model for Decoupling Control of a Variable Speed Refrigeration System (가변속 냉동시스템의 비간섭제어를 위한 실험적 모델)

  • This paper deals with an empirical model for decoupling control to control the refrigeration system effectively. The conventional control schemes of the system are mainly focused on representative two control methods, superheat control and capacity control. The capacity control is basically conducted to respond partial loading conditions on the purpose of energy saving. The superheat control is mainly carried out to maintain maximum coefficient of performance (COP). In the variable speed refrigeration system, the capacity and the superheat are controlled by inverters and electronic expansion valves respectively for saving energy and improving cost performance. The capacity and superheat can not be controlled independently because of interfering loop when the compressor speed and opening angle electronic expansion valve is varied. Therefore, we suggest decoupling model to eliminate the interfering loop at first. Next, each transfer function in decoupling control model is obtained from number of experiments.

  • The thermoelectric refrigeration technologies have no moving parts. compressor, or piping required. In this study, the basic capacity of thermoelectric devices and development on some thermoelectric refrigerator were reviewed and basic technical concepts related with many kinds of thermoelectric materials were discussed. Especially the result of performance test on thermoelectric refrigerator whose minimum temperature of $-2^{\circ}C$ was introduced briefly.

  • IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) is widely used in many applications such as an electric vehicle, compressor drives of air conditioner and machine tool spindle drives. In order to maximize the efficiency in such applications, this paper is proposed the optimal control method of the armature current. The controllable electrical loss which consists of the copper loss and the iron loss can be minimized by the optimal control of the armature current. The minimization of loss is possible to realize efficiency optimization control for the proposed IPMSM The proposed control algorithm is applied to IPMSM drive system, the operating characteristics controlled by efficiency optimization control are examined in detail by simulation.

  • Since a transcritical $CO_2$ cycle shows lower performance than conventional air conditioners in the cooling mode operation, it is required to enhance the performance of the $CO_2$ cycle by applying advanced technologies and optimizing components. In this study, the cooling performance of a $CO_2$ system measured by varying refrigerant charge amount, compressor frequency, EEV opening and length of internal heat exchanger. As a result, the cooling COP of the basic system without internal heat exchanger was 2.1. The cooling performance of the modified cycle applying internal heat exchanger improved by $4-9\%$ over the basic cycle.

  • This paper deals with design method of proportional-integral(PI) and feedforward controller for obtaining precise temperature and high energy efficiency of oil cooler system in machine tools. The compressor's speed and opening angle of an electronic expansion valve are controlled to keep reference value of temperature at oil outlet and superheat of an evaporator. Especially, the feedforward controller is added to suppress temperature fluctuation under abrupt disturbances. Through some experiments, the suggested method can control the target temperature within steady state error of ${\pm}0.l^{\circ}C$ and maximum overshoot $0.2^{\circ}C$ under abrupt disturbances.

  • Refrigerant flow rates of the multi-type air-conditioning system can be regulated by electronic expansion valves (EEV). The performance of the multi-type air-conditioning system may be improved by lowering the superheat at the compressor suction side. In this study, a superheat temperature setpoint reset algorithm was developed by using fuzzy logics, and a PI algorithm was applied to control the superheat temperature near setpoints. Experimental results showed energy savings and stable operations at a multi-type air-conditioning system. Therefore, the developed setpoint reset algorithm may be effectively used for the EEV superheat temperature control of the multi-type air-conditioning system.

  • This paper investigates the control problem of evaporator superheat, i.e., the difference between the temperature of the refrigerant at the entrance region of an evaporator and that at the exit region, for multi-type air-conditioning/refrigeration systems. Mathematical equations describing the characteristics of compressor, condenser, evaporator, and electronic expansion valve are first derived. Then, the transfer functions from the current input of the electronic expansion valve to wall temperatures of evaporator tube at two-phase region and superheated region, respectively, are derived. The stability and performance of the closed loop system with a PI controller are analyzed by Nyquist stability criterion. Simulation results are provided.

Simulation on the Heating Performance of a 2-Stage Compression Heat Pump System Using River Water (하천수열원을 이용한 2단압축 열펌프의 난방성능 시뮬레이션)

  • The use of river water as a heat source of a heat pump has the advantage in the performance compared to the use of atmospheric air because the temperature variation of river water over the year is relatively small. In this study, the performance of the heat pump system using river water as a heat source was numerically investigated. A simulation model for the 2-stage compression heat pump system was developed with each component model composed of compressors, heat exchangers, a flash tank and electronic expansion devices. The peformance of the heat pump system using river water was improved by $50\%$ compared to that using atmospheric air in winter conditions.
