This study evaluated the compression force at the L5/S1 disc using EMG(Electromyography). EMG signals were analyzed under the condition of fixed vertical factor (20Cm∼80Cm), two horizontal factors (35Cm, 55Cm), and two weight factors (10Kg, 25Kg) 2 times per minute for each posture. Also, the result was compared with the compression force of each posture which computated by the equation of NIOSH(National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) guide to manual lifting(1991). The experimental result show that EMG signals have more an effect on the Weight than the Horizontal factors. Also, there are not significant differences on the analysis result of EMG signals between Health members and not, because the body buildings which doing Health members are not enhanced the motor unit due to the MMH(Manual Material Handing).
Since driving include compilcated actions that require a variety of abillity and cause extrme concentration or strain, divers tend to feel tired easiy. However, divers can't recognize fatigue degree by himself and accordingly the methods to measure quantitative fatigue degree exactly is quite difficult to be secured. In this study, the most efficient driving posture was suggested based on the analysis of quantitative muscular strength and fatigue degree according to posture. The driver whom we experimented included 9 commercial bus drivers. We also analyzed quantitative legs' muscular strength according te operating each pedal, left and right then we analyzed muscular strength and muscular fatigue degree according to driving pattern while driving commercial buses. And then we suggested the most efficient driving posture.
Purpose : The aim of this study was to compare the muscle activities of thumb and wrist during unimanual, bimanual symmetric and bimanual reciprocal movements using surface electromyography. Method : Thirty-six participants were involved in this study. Two blocks were used to perform unimanual, bimanual symmetric and bimanual reciprocal movements of thumb and wrist. Muscle activities in the flexor pollicis brevis, abductor pollicis brevis, extensor carpi radialis and flexor carpi radialis were measured using an surface EMG system. Result : For the flexor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis brevis, significant difference in the muscle activity were found among the unimanual, bimanual symmetric and bimanual reciprocal movement. For the extensor carpi radialis and flexor carpi radialis, the unimanual movement significantly different from the bimanual symmetric and reciprocal movements. Conclusion : Both the thumb and wrist, bimanual symmetric and reciprocal movements were more efficient than the unimanual movement. Moreover, with regard to the thumb, the bimanual reciprocal movement was more efficient than the bimanual symmetric movement.
Objectives : The aim of this stuty is to investigate the effect of acupuncture at $Yanggn\bar{u}ngch'\check{o}n$ (G34) on the muscle fatigue. Methods : Subjects were asked to perform the elbow flexion and extension to induce the muscle fatigue. Sample group of 16 healthy subjects had acupuncture on $Yanggn\bar{u}ngch'\check{o}n$ (G34) during the resting time, while control group of 13 healthy subjects did not. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was measured after exercise and rest to record muscle fatigue. Results : Acupuncture at $Yanggn\bar{u}ngch'\check{o}n$ (G34) is effective for decreasing the muscle fatigue.
Conventional bipolar surface electromyography(EMG) technique detects only the superimposed electromyographic activity of a large number of motor units due to its low spatial resolution. For the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorder, the information of single MU is required. In this paper, 9 channel array surface electrode system was as designed and MLoG filter was proposed. Also the MCPT(modified convolution processing technique)method was proposed for the improvement of MUAP resolution. For performance evaluation, power spectrum analysis of random data and raw EMG signal comparison of MUAP shape and quantitative estimation of SNR were executed. As a result, the MUAP resolution improvement of 32% was obtained from the standpoint of the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR).
EMG is used in rehabilitation research to provide a method to infer muscle function. This paper will present an introduction to interpretation of electromyography (EMG) data for physical therapists. It is important for the physical therapist to have an understanding of the collection and reduction of raw electrical data from the muscle to allow the physical therapist to interpret findings in a research report, and improve planning of clinical research projects with respect to data collection. We will discuss factors that affect the type of EMG collected and the ways in which various common methods of data reduction will impact the findings from a study that uses EMG.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the VMO/VL ratio and onset timing using EMG biofeedback training over a 5-day period. Methods : Twenty-one healthy female college students with no known right knee musculoskeletal dysfunction were recruited this study. Muscle activity was measured by surface electromyography(Myosystem 1400A, Noraxon Inc., U.S.A). Statistical analysis was used two-way repeated ANOVA to know difference between the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis oblique onset timing differences, VMO/VL ratio. Results : Biofeedback training group significantly improved VMO/VL ratio and EMG activity of the vastus medialis oblique after intervention. Conclusion : These result indicate that biofeedback training on the vastus medialis oblique has effect on the VMO/VL ratio. EMG biofeedback can be recommended for the facilitation of VMO muscular recruitment.
The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of muscular power by COP(center of pressure) training according to the angle variation of tilting bed. We changed the angles of tilting bed(up-down direction 0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$ and right-left direction -15$^{\circ}$, 0$^{\circ}$, +15$^{\circ}$) for the correlation between angles and muscular power. And we measured EMG(electormyography) of lower limbs muscle(rectus femoris, biceps femoris, and gastrocnemius, tibialisa anterior) during COP training. COP training was divided by the COP trace training(in all direction) and sine wave trace training(vertical and horizontal direction). As the result, we obtained the improvement effect of COP training and we showed that electromyography(EMG) variations of lower limbs muscle on the angle variations of tilting bed were investigated.
Purpose: We investigated to identify the effect of robo-horseback riding exercise (RHRE) on trunk muscle activity ratios for patients with low back pain. Methods: Twelve patients with low back pain and twelve healthy adults were recruited for this study. Subjects performed the RHRE with the neutral spine position. The amplitude of electromyography activity was recorded from the selected trunk muscles (internal oblique [IO], rectus abdominis [RA], multifidus [MF], the thoracic part of the iliocostalis lumborum [ICLT]). The ratios of the relative local muscle activity to the global muscle activity in abdominal and lumbar parts were calculated. Results: There were significant differences in the change values of the IO/RA and the MF/ICLT between low back pain (LBP) patients and healthy adults. The IO/RA ratio and the MF/ICLT ratio showed significant increase in LBP patients after training. Conclusion: The RHRE improved the trunk muscle activity ratio in patients with low back pain. The information presented here is important for investigators who use lumbar stabilization exercises as a rehabilitation exercise.
The ride comfort is one of the most important indices which decide the quality of automotive seats. A subjective evaluation is the general method for comfort evaluation of automotive seats. But the subjective evaluation assess the individual sensibility using questionnaire. Therefore, a need to develop methodologies to obtain objective measurements of the fatigue evaluation is evident. In an effort to monitor muscle activity during driving electromyography (EMG) was employed. In an experimental setting the subjective evaluation was conducted using questionnaire under the static conditions (8 subjects) and the fatigue was induced in muscles using EMG under the dynamic conditions (2 drivers). The resultant EMG signals were then sampled for three different muscles. In test involving 2 subjects of similar size and build, utilizing four different automotive seats, test results support the use of EMG to quantify muscular fatigue as a viable means of objective evaluation for the different automotive seats.
