  • Objective : This study aimed to investigate the use of electromyography (EMG) to evaluate upper limb movement or function in stroke patients. Methods : We reviewed papers published in journals between January 2018 and December 2021 using PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, RISS, and KISS. The main keywords of databases were ('stroke' OR 'hemiplegia') AND ('EMG' OR 'electromyography' OR 'electromyogram' OR 'muscle activity') AND ('Upper limb' OR 'Hand'). Results : Fifteen studies were selected, most of which evaluated muscle activity. Interventions performing tasks related to activities of daily living (ADLs), using assistive technology, and interventions that provide repetitive training were most frequently applied. Conclusions : When evaluating upper limb functions using electromyography, it is meaningful to present an evaluation that can be used according to the purpose of the study and to provide a basis for setting up interventions that can utilize electromyography during evaluation.

  • In this study, we are concluded like this : 5 men who are soccer player of P university in B city measure the Electromyography with an angle of motion according to kinesiotaping's application when practicing in-step kick. When exercising in-step kick, the change of realization of muscle load of lower limbs enhence Gastrocnemius Lateralis and Vastus Medialis in the section of backswing, and improve Tibialis Anterior, Vastus Medialis, Rectus Femoris prior to impact after back-swing. Before impact, it mainly impoved Tibialis Anterior, Vastus Medialis, Rectus Femoris. After impact, it generally improved Gastrocnemius Lateralis, Vastus Medialis. Average integral electromyography value, it was such a small difference(; the difference of the value in Tibialis Anterior, Rectus Femoris, Vastus Medialis) that we can't compare case of after taping than before. In Electromyography, in case of after taping was considerably decreased at Gastrocnemius Lateralis, there was statistically significant difference between before and after. It was a little increased, after taping than before at Knee angle. And degree was a little decreased at Ankle angle. But, It's so delicate difference, there was not statistically significant difference between before and after.

  • Purpose: Oromandibular dystonia is a neurological disorder that affects the jaw and lower face muscles, often resulting in abnormal repetitive movement of the jaw and perioral structures. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of surface electromyography (EMG) in evaluating the treatment outcome of oromandibular dystonia. Methods: Based on a retrospective review of medical records, we analyzed the data of four patients who received medication or botulinum toxin injection, as well as surface EMG of the jaw muscles before and after treatment. We assessed the patients' clinical characteristics and the results of surface EMG before and after treatment. Results: The case series included one female and three males, and the age range was 65-78 years. Based on the clinical features, two subjects were classified as jaw deviation and the remaining two were as jaw closing. Dystonic patterns revealed by surface EMG varied, including phasic, tonic, and mixed contraction patterns. EMG amplitude after treatment was lower than pre-treatment value in all four subjects, suggesting improved clinical signs and symptoms. One subject who received clonazepam and another who received botulinum toxin injection showed a remarkable reduction in EMG amplitude within a normal range. Conclusions: Surface EMG can be used to effective evaluate treatment outcomes in patients with oromandibular dystonia. It could be considered as an adjunctive diagnostic tool in managing patients with dystonia.

  • Purpose: There was no controlled study on botox injection and neurectomy for treatments of muscle hypertrophy. Although many studies have shown the clinical effects of each treatment, it was not able to evaluate and compare the effects of each treatment because there was no comparison of the two treatments under the same experimental condition. Hence, the aim of this study is to com Methods: The study was carried out on 21 rabbits. 9 rabbits received botox injection(botox injection group), and neurectomy was performed to another 9 rabbits (neurectomy group). 3 rabbits did not receive any treatment(control group). To compare and analyze the effects of muscular atrophy, muscle was stained with NADH-TR, and the changes in size of the muscle fiber were examined. And the electromyography was examined. In each group, muscle fiber was stained and electromyography was performed 2, 3, and 6 months after injection or operation. Results: In histological test and electromyography, in the neurectomy group, the size of muscular fiber and amplitude of electromyography decreased until 2 months after neurectomy. And decreased results were maintained with the passage of time. It showed irreversible aspect. On the other hand, in the botox injection group, the decrease in the size of muscular fiber and amplitude of electromyography was observed until 2 months after injection. In 3 months after the injection, it was slowly getting back to original size and had almost recovered by 6 months after the injection. It showed reversible aspect. Conclusion: This study shows researches about clinical effect of botox injection and neurectomy coincide with the results of experiment under the same experimental condition.

  • We report a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who developed a pneumothorax after needle electromyography (EMG), probably of the intercostal muscles. Needle EMG on intercostal muscles has a high risk of pneumothorax, not only because electromyographers are unfamiliar to its technique, but also due to its close anatomical location to the pleural cavity. In our patient, advanced intercostal muscle atrophy due to disease process would have increased the risk further.

  • This paper examines methods to estimate torque and angle in shoulder flexion from surface electromyography(sEMG) signals for intuitive and delicate control of robotic assistance device. Five muscles on the upper arm, three for shoulder flexion and two for shoulder extension, were used to offer favorable sEMG recording conditions in the estimation. The methods tested were the mean absolute value (MAV) with linear regression and the artificial neural network (ANN) method. An optimal condition was sought by varying combination of muscles used and the parameters in each method. The estimation performance was evaluated using the correlation values and normalized root mean square error values. In addition, we discussed their possible use as an estimation of motion intent of a user or as a command input in a physical human-machine interaction system.
