  • This paper presents 12.2 GHz ~ 12.7 GHz frequency band reflection type 5-bit digital phase shifter with constant insertion loss property that was fabricated with relatively low cost's InGaAs HEMT for amplifier. The unavoidable large insertion loss difference between on and off states of HEMT, when it is designed by conventional design theory based on ideal switching device, is removed by transforming the HEMT impedances at on and off states to other proper values connecting a certain length transmission line to HEMT and then applying the conventional design theory. The fabricated 5-bit digital phase shifter shows very good insertion loss properties of less than 1.5 dB insertion loss difference and -4.5 dB ~ -6 dB insertion loss in 35 phase steps at 12.2 GHz ~ 12.7 GHz. These results verify the design method presented in this paper, which is useful to design phase shifter of constant insertion loss with non-ideal switching device.

  • It is shown that inverted ${\pi}$ feeder affects the gain improvement for the internal antenna of mobile phone. Generation of current on the inverted ${\pi}$ feeder, by the modification of conventional feeding structure for the PIFA and IFA, can apply T matching theory to the new feeder. Therefore, inverted ${\pi}$ feeder based on the T matching theory makes higher radiation resistance, and also increases the gain. To verify inverted ${\pi}$ feeding effect, feeder is applied to GSM/DCS dual band conventional PIFA, and measured return loss and patterns. By measurement, it's shown that this new feeding antenna has $0.23{\sim}0.84$ dB higher average gain for GSM band and $0.01{\sim}1.74$ dB higher average gain for DCS band than conventional fed PIFA without resonant frequency change.

  • This paper presents a method of moments with the transmission line theory to analyze the sleeve dipole array antennas and analyses characteristics of that. There were several considerations for analysis of the method of moments. First, the method of moments were applied at both of the sleeve dipole elements and the coaxial line because the current flows on both of them. Second, the feed voltages of each sleeve dipole element were obtained by using a transmission line theory because the feeding structure is fed by coaxial line in series. Third, the series reactance between the coaxial line and the open side of the sleeve was considered as impedance loading on the antenna. The radiation patterns and current distributions from the numerical results were considered as variation of the feed distances and frequencies. To verify the validity of our method, 4 elements sleeve dipole array antennas with 1 λg distance were fabricated and measured, and then the measured radiation patterns were compared with the numerical results. The measured results were confirmed a good agreement with the numerical results.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of electromagnetic field in orthodontic tooth movement, and the optimal application period of electromagnetic field to initiate tooth movement. Eighty male Hartley guinea pigs were utilized in this study. Laterally directed orthodontic force was applied to the maxillary central incisors. Half sine-wave pulsed electromagnetic field(HSPEMP) was applied to experimental group during 10 days. According to the period of application of HSPEMP(4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours a day), they were divided into the three sub-groups The obtained results were as follows; 1. In case of application of HSPEMF during 4 hours a day, there was no significant difference in the final amount of orthodontic tooth movement between the experimental and the control group. 2. In case of application of HSPEMF during 8 and 12 hours a day, there was a significant increase in the final amount of orthodontic tooth movement since the eighth day, the sixth day respectively. 3. In comparison with the case of application of HSPEMF during 8 hours a day, there was a significant increase in the final amount of orthodontic tooth movement at the seventh day and the eighth day in case of application of HSPEMF during 12 hours a day.

  • This work presents a method used for designing a broadband class-E power amplifier that combines the two techniques of a nonlinear shunt capacitance and a low quality factor of a series resonator. The nonlinear shunt capacitance theory accurately extracts the value of class-E components. In addition, the quality factor of the series resonator was considered to obtain a wide bandwidth for the power amplifiers. The purpose of using this method was to produce a simple topology and a high efficiency, which are two outstanding features of a class-E power amplifier. The experimental results show that a design was created using from a 130 to 180 MHz frequency with a bandwidth of 32% and a peak measured power added efficiency of 84.8%. This prototype uses an MRF282SR1 MOSFET transistor at a 3-W output power level. Furthermore, a summary of the experimental results compared with other high-efficiency articles is provided to validate the advantages of this method.

  • This paper discusses the near field characteristics of a dipole source located near conducting metallic walls from an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) point of view. An integral equation for a dipole source near a metallic wall is derived and solved by applying Galerkin's method of moments (MoM). The results show that in the regions outside the dipole source, total electric near fields decrease gradually in magnitude with an increasing field point from the dipole source. But in the regions inside the dipole source, total electric near fields decrease rapidly with a dipole position of $h{\leq}0.3{\lambda}$. For a dipole position of $h{\geq}0.7{\lambda}$, the peaks and nulls of the total near electric field occur periodically in the regions inside the dipole source, and the fluctuation period is almost $0.5{\lambda}$. The worst position for a receptor location is along the z-axis, and a range of a half-magnitude of the maximum near electric field in the principal H-plane is about two times broader than that of the principal E-plane. Experimental measurements are also presented to validate the theory.

  • In this paper, we describe a measurement technique for the backscattering coefficient and ground truth of a vegetation canopy in detail. A simple microwave backscattering model for vegetation canopies is verified by being compared with this measurement. An R-band$(1.7\sim2.0GHz)$ scatterometer system is used to measure the backscattering coefficient of a vegetated area in the Han-river park for various incidence angles and a wide range of the soil moisture contents. It is found that the model agrees quite well with the measurements for co-polarized radar backscatter, and needs a correction for cross polarized radar backscatter.

  • In this paper, we have designed artificial double negative(DNG) transmission line composed of series inter-digital capacitor and two shunt inductive short stubs. This artificial DNG transmission line has the property of double positive (DPS) transmission line over some frequency ranges due to RF nature. In detail, this transmission line simultaneously has the contrary properties of DNG and DPS transmission line depending on operation frequency. DPS/DNG transmission line at leaky region is utilized to design frequency scanning antenna with backfire-to-endfire. We have simulated and measured the dispersion and for-field radiation beam patterns of symmetrical leaky wave antenna. The results show rough agreement.

  • Attenuation in vegetation is important, for both terrestrial and earth-space systems. However, the wide range of conditions and types of foliage makes it difficult to develop a generalized prediction procedure. Currently, there is also a lack of suitably prediction model and measured experimental data for vegetation loss. So in this paper, vegetation loss data for four different tree-species, including Dawn-redwood tree, Plane tree, Pine tree and Fir tree are obtained by measurement in the frequency range of 1.0 $\sim$ 6.0 GHz. The through or scattered component is calculated using a model based upon the theory of RET(Radiative Energy Transfer) and RET modeling parameters are extracted from the measured data.

  • Some closed-form expressions for circuit parameters are derived based on the equivalent circuits for the resonant MTM-TL(open and short). The lumped series resistance and shunt conductance, which explain radiation effects of a unit cell may be found by |$S_{11}$|(simulated or measured) with open and short terminations, respectively. The EM-simulated results, circuit-simulated results(obtained using extracted circuit parameters) and measurement results are shown to be in good agreement.
