The transverse electromagnetic (TEM) cells are widely used for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing and field probe calibrations. We propose the verification of TEM mode with statistical method using a four-port TEM cell. The verification results are compared with Normal, Rayleigh, and Gamma distribution. As a result, the 75 % quantile of the Rayleigh distribution is excellent agreement with the true quantiles for a number of calibration points.
The immunity testing in this study was performed to examine the conducted immunity and radiated immunity in medical instrumentation. Experiments were performed to assess the conducted emission and radiated emission of medical instrumentation such as MRI, ultrasound system, and electro surgical unit etc. The emission testing revolves around conducted emissions (high-frequency currents) on power lines and signal cables. Emission testing also looks at the output of energy through the air (called radiated emissions) and analyzes the strength of those radio-frequency signals generated unintentionally by the electrical medical device that is under test. Finally, this study would provide significant data for furture research or electromagnetic interference and compatibility test in medical instrumentation.

This paper deals with the near-field to far-field calculation for far-field characteristics of antenna and electromagnetic compatibility(EMC) testing. Since the conventional EMC testing process is inefficient such as measurements of the wide band signals and mega structures, Stratton-Chu formula is used to predict the far-field emission by simple and direct process. The usefulness of Stratton-Chu formula is verified by comparing to the analytic solution of the uniform distribution aperture in free-space. In order to inspect the far-fields and to get the near-field values, full-wave simulation solver is utilized. Through the full-wave simulation about the patch antenna, calculated far-field results from Stratton-Chu formula are proven. The predicted magnitudes of the far-field are in error by less than 6 %.

Internal replaceable electronic module substitutions can impact EMC (ElectroMagnetic Compatibility) qualification testing and results if EMC testing is conducted at the cabinet level. The impact of component substitutions on EMC qualification results therefore should be evaluated. If a qualitative evaluation is not adequate to ensure that the modified product will not impact the cabinet level EMC qualification results, a new qualification testing should be conducted. Component level retesting should be conducted under electromagnetically equivalent conditions with the cabinet level test. This paper analyzes the propagation of conducted susceptibility test waveforms in a representative cabinet and evaluates the impact of component substitutions on cabinet level EMC qualification results according to the location of the replacement items. A guideline for a qualitative evaluation of the impact of component substitutions is described based on the propagation of the conducted susceptibility test waveforms. A module level test method is also described based on an analysis of the shielding effectiveness of the cabinet.

In this paper, we propose a compact antenna hat to perform RF compatibility testing efficiently between the launch vehicle and ground stations. The proposed structure implements a small size and low loss using the conductive shield instead of the conventional RF absorber. The S-band antenna hat, which is fabricated for an inverted-F onboard antenna with the size of $74mm{\times}13mm{\times}16mm$, has the small enclosure of $88mm{\times}35mm{\times}44mm$, the return loss of 25.6 dB, the insertion loss of 0.26 dB, and the leakage loss of 49.4 dB at the center frequency of 2.25 GHz. The simulated and measured results show a good agreement.

Bulk Current Injection(BCI) test is a method of injecting current into Integrated Circuit(IC) using a current injection probe to qualify the standards of Electromagnetic Compatibility(EMC). This paper, we propose a microstrip coupler structure that can replace the BCI current injection probe that is used to inject a RF noise in standard IEC 62132-part 3 documented by International Electrotechnical Commission. Conventional high cost BCI probe has mostly been used in testing automotive ICs that use high supply voltage. We propose a compact microstrip coupler which is suitable for immunity testing of low power ICs. We tested its validity to replace the BCI injection probe from 100 MHz to 1,000 MHz. We compared the power[dBm] that is needed to generate the same level of noise between current injection probe and microstrip coupler by sweeping the frequency. Results show that microstrip coupler can inject the same level of noise into ICs for immunity test with less power.

In this paper, we present a set of methodologies to model the electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS) testing of I/O buffers for mobile system memory based on the bulk current injection (BCI) method. An efficient equivalent circuit model is developed for the current injection probe, line impedance stabilization network (LISN), printed circuit board (PCB), and package. The simulation results show good correlation with the measurements and thus, the work presented here will enable electromagnetic susceptibility analysis at the integrated circuit (IC) design stage.
In this study, an investigation study on EMC(Electromagnetic Compatibility) is presented for power converter circuit. A DC-DC power converter circuit using LT3652 chip is designed and fabricated. The simulation results using ANSYS SIwave for far field radiation and unwanted emissions are presented. To minimize the unwanted emissions, we design a optimized circuit by using capacitors and ground posts. The conducted and radiation emissions are measured in the EMC test chamber based on standardized testing procedures of CISPR 22. The measured EMI emission values for a power converter circuit are presented and compared with the original circuit. The results show that the unwanted emissions from the circuit are tremendously diminished due to the applied EMI reduction techniques. The results proposed here can be usefully applied on designing power converter modules.
This paper proposes an algorithm to improve the correlation between giga-hertz transverse electromagnetic (GTEM) cell and open area test site (OATS). It is based on the dipole modeling process of an unknown source object in a GTEM cell and on the evaluation of the approximate far field equations correlated with measured GTEM powers at output port of the GTEM cell. In this algorithm, the relative phase differences between dipole moments play an important part in modeling the test object as a set of dipoles and offer stable calculation of emission values. The radiated emission test using this algorithm requires fifteen orientations of equipment under test, but the increased orientations as compared with the previous method have little effect on the time needed for testing. Radiation from a notebook computer has been tested for statistical analysis of the correlation between GTEM data and OATS data. The emission test results of the notebook computer show that the mean, the standard deviation, and the correlation coefficient are -0.62, 1.99, and +0.85, respectively. These figures indicate that this algorithm provides improved accuracy in the measurement of electromagnetic emissions over the previous method.

Pyrotechnic initiators provide a source of pyrotechnic energy used to initiate a variety of space mechanisms. Pyrotechnic systems build in electromagnetic environment that may lead to critical or catastrophic hazards. Special precautions are need to prevent a pulse large enough to trigger the initiator from appearing in the pyrotechnic firing circuits at any but the desired time. The EMC verification shall be shown by analysis or test that the pyrotechnic systems meets the requirements of inadvertent activation. The MIL-STD-1576 and two range safeties, AFSPC and CSG, require the safety margin for electromagnetic potential hazards to pyrotechnic systems to a level at least 20 dB below the maximum no-fire power of the EED. The PC23 is equivalent to NASA standard initiator and the 1EPWH100 squib is ESA standard initiator. This paper verifies the two safety margins for electromagnetic potential hazards. The first is verified by analyzing against a RF power. The second is verified by testing against a DC current. The EMC safety margin requirement against RF power has been demonstrated through the electric field coupling analysis in differential mode with 21 dB both PC23 and 1EPWH100, and in common mode with 58 dB for PC23 and 48 dB for 1EPWH100 against the maximum no-fire power of the EED. Also, the EMC safety margin requirement against DC current has been demonstrated through the electrical isolation test for the pyrotechnic firing circuits with greater than 20 dB below the maximum no-fire current of the EED.
