  • In underground power cable system, the device for limiting over-voltage is needed when transient over-voltage break out between sheath and ground. For this reason, the SVL(Sheath Voltage Limiter) has been applied on weak points. But the broken SVLs which are installed on the single point bonding system on underground cable are frequently found. In this paper, EMTP(Electromagnetic Transient Program) is utilized to analyze effects on the installation methodology of the parallel ground conductor and SVL for the single point bonding system on the underground cable. The result shows that the proposed installation methodology can be applied for single point bonding system and contribute for power system stabilization.

  • This paper deal with the study of the phenomenon of Ferroresonance in the 170kV Gas Insulated Switchgear(GIS). The Electromagnetic Transient Program(EMTP) was used to simulate the phenomenon of Ferroresonance and conducted the study of the transient over-voltage. An example power system, used in this study, have an accident that the ferroresonance phenomenon happens at MOFVT(Voltage Transformer). The simulation results notices that the secondary part of VT has to be connected by ferroresonance suppressor when the circuit breaker connected with grading capacitor is switched off.

  • In this paper, a 10kVA PV inverter applying Incremental Conductance(IncCond) method for maximum power point tracking WIS developed and its performance tests were carried out. Modeling and simulation of PV array and system controller was performed using PSCAD/EMTDC, an electromagnetic transient analysis program. After comparison and analysis of Perturbation & Observation (P & O) and IncCond method, a PV inverter based on IncCond method was designed and manufactured. Grid interface transient characteristics including start-up, normal operation, and fault operation were tested, which verified the usefulness of the proposed system. In the near future, commercialization process will proceed through additional extensive tests of transients.

  • This paper deals with overvoltage stresses in the field circuit of synchronous machine connected to HVDC terminal. A load rejection of the HVDC may cause generator in the station to become self-excited, resulting in a severe system overvoltage. This paper shows that violent field current oscillations can be produced by resonance between the machine inductance and the terminal capacitance. As most conventional excitation system do not allow reverses current, new topology of excitation system to allow reverse current is proposed. the proposed system can limit the rate of rise of terminal voltage during conditions of self excitation. Apart from these simulations, the nature(Magnitude and frequency) of the field transient state is explained mathematically. Finally, the EMTDC program is used for the simulation studies.

  • The protection of underground cables against transient overvoltages resulting from lightning and other causes is important in cable-line which is connected with overhead line and underground cable. This paper investigates the failure of SVL(Sheath Voltage Limiter) and presents the application of protection methods for single point bonding on underground transmission cable system. EMTP(Electromagnetic Transient Program) is used in order to study the overvoltages and modeling of components of the system such as, underground cables, SVLs and towers.

  • The rating of a circuit breaker depends not only on the interrupting current but also on a transient recovery voltage (TRV). To achieve a successful interruption, the circuit breaker must withstand the TRV. A superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is a device that limits the fault current fast and effectively without having high impedance during normal operation of the power system. Therefore, we studied the influence of the TRV according to the application of a resistive type SFCL in distribution system. This paper analyses the influence of the TRV for various application position of the resistive SFCL. The distribution system and the resistive SFCL were modeled by using EMTP-RV (Electromagnetic Transient Program - Restructured Version)

  • Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) are a main cause of voltage flicker due to the interaction of the high demand currents of the load with the supply system impedance. The stochastic models have described the physical phenomena of EAFs. An alternative approach is to include deterministic chaos in the characterization of the arc currents. In this paper, a chaotic approach to such modeling is described and justified. At the same time, a DLL (Dynamic Link Library) module, which is a FORTRAN interface with TACS (Transient Analysis of Control Systems), is developed to implement the chaotic load model in the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). The details of the module and the results of tests performed on the module to verify the model and to illustrate its capabilities are presented in this paper.

  • In this paper the method to determine tire optimal switching instants in order to reduce the transient surges during switching not relevant to the neutral treatment of shunt reactors is presented. This method consists of the following two steps. First, the instants of the voltage peaks between the contacts of each poles and the voltage magnitude as well as the moments of the current zero crosses were found out analytically. Next, the instants of the contact touches or separations were determined in consideration of the rate of decrease of dielectric strength or a circuit breaker and the variation of the its operating time. The results obtained from the EMTP(Electromagnetic Transient Program) analysis studies show that the making instants are established at the peak voltage of each three poles for any conditions of a neutral point and the possible upper limited values of inrush currents due to the variation of the mechanical operating time can be estimated.

  • Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) use bulk electrical energy to create heat in metal refining industries. The electric arc process is a main cause of the degradation of the electric power quality such as voltage flicker due to the interaction of the high demand currents of the load with the supply system impedance. The stochastic models have described the aperiodic physical phenomena of EAFs. An alternative approach is to include deterministic chaos in the characterization of the arc currents. In this parer, a chaotic approach to such modeling is described and justified. At the same time, a DLL(Dynamic Link Library) module, which is a FORTRAN interface with TACS (Transient Analysis of Control Systems), is developed to implement the chaotic load model in the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP).
