  • The program for dielectric ceramic waveguide filter was developed based on the direct coupled filter of ${\lambda}/2$ step impedance prototype. This developed program was called DWFD(Direct coupled Waveguide Filter Design). The filter was designed by 3-dimensional laminated type to reduce the size at the 1 GHz. S scattering matrix for this filter was calculated using the DWFD program. The width of inductive irises for laminated filter was computed by HFSS simulation tool. This waveguide filter was designed by 8 poles with bandwidth 25 MHz at the center frequency 881.5 MHz. By using a dielectric constant 35.4 and laminated type, the size of filter was reduced with width 50 mm and height 48 mm rapidly. We can see that the measured results agree well with the HFSS simulation result. Finally, this paper is shown that the design and implementation of waveguide filters can be presented by using DWFD program simply.

  • In this paper, we designed and implemented a visible light identification(VLID) system consisting of a VLID reader and a tag which backscatters incident lights from the reader. A VLID tag sends its ID to the reader by switching an LCD shutter which is located on its surface. The VLID reader consists of six LEDs and a photodiode(PD). The LEDs emit visible light and a PD located in a center position of LEDs receives backscattered light from the VLID tag. A microcontroller and a commercial liquid crystal display(LCD) shutter for 3D-TV glasses are used to implement a VLID tag. Experiments were conducted to confirm VLID system performance. We successfully demonstrated experiments to send NRZ-OOK signal of 100 bps over a distance of 35 cm at daytime. Also, we suggested the theoretical maximum transmission rate and the various methods to enhance the separation distance between a VLID reader and a tag.

  • To implement a mobile radio system, wave-propagation models are necessary to determine propagation characteristics accurately, Currently, the empirical/theoretical prediction models for urban environments are fairly well-developed. But there is a lack of a suitable prediction model for mountain region. So in this paper, to develop the prediction model for mountain region, propagation environments are classified based on three basic mechanisms: reflection, diffraction, penetration(absorbtion and scattering), and measurements have been performed for the classified mountain regions including open area, forest and ridge. Using the measurement data, empirical modeling of propagation characteristics are performed, and then a prediction model for mountain region is proposed.

  • In this paper, A high selective dual-band bandpass filter was proposed using a dual-mode ring resonator with two short-circuited stubs. For dual-mode resonance, the ring resonator is directly connected with non-orthogonal feed-lines via coupling capacitors. Two short-circuited stubs which are unequal lengths are simultaneously placed at two corners along the two symmetry plane of the ring resonator in order to obtain dual-band responses. Because the feeding angle perturbated ring resonator of the proposed dual-band bandpass filter has the symmetrical structure, Even/Odd mode analysis can be well applied to extract the scattering parameters and transmission zero frequencies. The proposed dual-band bandpass filter was designed and fabricated for WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network) application of IEEE 802.11n standard. The measured results showed a good agreement with the simulation results, and it should be well applied not only for WLAN applications but also for any other communication systems.

  • This paper presents a tumor detection for breast cancer that utilizes two-dimensional(2D) image reconstruction with microwave tomographic imaging. The breast cancer detection system under development consists of 16 transmit/receive antennas, and the microwave tomography system operates at 1,700 MHz. The four types of breast(ED-, HD-, SC-, and FT-type) are used for image reconstruction. To solve a 2D inverse scattering problem, the method of moments(MoM) is employed for forward problem solving, and the simplex method employed as an optimization algorithm. The results of the reconstructed image show that the ED- and HD-types of breasts are well reconstructed, but SC- and FT-type breasts are not well because of the error including.

  • Microwave(M/W) bands, though having great demand in wireless services, have been used mostly for long distance communications. As a result, the studies on their mobile radio models have been made less than on VHF/UHF. However, as the mobile communication services with M/W bands have been increasing, the development of a more accurate prediction model of the mobile radio environments has been demanded. The development of a reliable radio prediction model in the mobile radio environments requires the measurement and analysis of the characteristics of the radio waves according to reflection, diffraction and scattering of radio signals in various mobile radio environments. The proposed 8 GHz band radio prediction models have 2 different categories: (1) LOS model and (2) non-LOS model. The LOS model predicts signal strength using the analytic result with measured pathless exponents for the waves direct and reflected by ground and buildings, and the non-LOS model suggests a prediction model of received power by calculating the signal variations after diffraction.

  • This paper proposes a new coupling element of microwave slot coupler for designing waveguide slot array which can reduce the effect of undesired higher order mode coupling between coupling and radiating slots in the branch waveguide. The proposed device is composed of a centered longitudinal shunt-series coupling slot at the center of broad wall shared by two crossed rectangular waveguides and an asymmetric compound iris that excites the coupling slot. We first have obtained scattering parameters for the proposed coupler by use of EM S/W tool HFSS and then extracted the parameters of T- network equivalent circuit for the coupling slot. We also have analyzed the resonant properties such as resonant length and normalized admittance by changing the geometrical dimensions. The measured results for the fabricated coupler with short-circuited block ${\lambda}_g/4$ away from the coupling slot are well agreed with the simulated ones.

  • In this paper, we proposed airborne target recognition using multi-channel combining method in DTV-based passive radar. By combining multi-channel signals, we obtained the HRRP with sufficient range resolution. HRRP was obtained by AR method or zero-padding. From the obtained HRRP, we extracted scattering centers by CLEAN algorithm using the gradient descent. We extracted feature vectors and performed target recognition after training neural network using the extracted feature vectors. To verify performance of proposed methods, we assumed frequency bands of three broadcasting transmitters operated in Korea(Mt. Gwan-ak, Mt. Yong-moon, Kyeon-wol-ak) and used full scale 3D CAD model of four targets. Also we compared the target recognition performance of the proposed method with that of using only single-channel of three broadcasting transmitters. As a result, proposed methods showed better performance than using only single-channel at three broadcasting transmitters.

  • This paper presents an SAR-data calibration technique using a well-calibrated scatterometer. At first a fully-polarimetric antenna pattern(magnitude and phase) of the antenna main-beam using a conducting sphere was measured. Then, this data were used to calibrate polarimetrically an auto-mounted network analyzer-based scatterometer system. This scatterometer system can be used to measure the accurate Mueller matrices of earth surfaces such as grass fields, rice fields and bare soil surfaces; i.e., the phase-difference parameters can be obtained as well as the radar scattering coefficients. If a polarimetrically calibrated scatterometer is operated at the same time with the SAR system, the scatterometer data can be used to correct the SAR data, especially the phase-difference parameters. It was found that the correction effect is remarkable for the degree of correlation ${\alpha}$, which is one of the phase-difference parameter, while the correction effect is negligible for the magnitude parameters(backscattering coefficients).

  • In this paper, we studied the design of power divider using the slow-wave effect of Photonic Bandgap structure, which is etched on the ground plane. The proposed PBG structure can provides the changing of the characteristic impedance of the transmission line and the group delay velocity characteristic. Therefore we can make wider width than the width of conventional transmission line and decrease the length of transmission line. We presented the application for power divider using the characteristic impedance and electrical length extracted from scattering parameter. As adding proposed defect units, the effect of defect is studied. The experimental results show good agreements with the simulated results.
