  • A serpentine channel geometry often used in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell has a strong pressure gradient between adjacent channels in specific regions. The pressure gradient helps some amount of reactant gas penetrate through a gas diffusion layer(GDL). As a result, the overall serpentine flow structure is slightly different from intention of a designer. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of serpentine flow structure on current density distribution. By using a commercial code, STAR-CD, a numerical simulation is performed to analyze the fuel cell with relatively high aspect ratio active area. To increase the accuracy of the numerical simulation, GDL permeabilities are measured with various compression conditions. Three-dimensional flow field and current density distribution are calculated. For the verification of the numerical simulation results, water condensation process in the cathode channel is observed through a transparent bipolar plate. The result of this study shows that the region of relatively low current density corresponds to that of dropwise condensation in cathode channels.

  • Recently electrokinetic process is known to be a promising remediation technology for the contaminated soils with heavy metals, radionuclides, organic matters, and so on. The contaminants in electrokinetic technology are removed mainly by three mechanisms; electroosmosis, electromigration, and electrophoresis. When direct current is introduced between two electrodes planted in soil, a large amount of hydrogen ions is formed and moves from anode to cathode with the other cations contained in electrolyte. The water flow caused by tile movement of cations is called as electroosmosis. Especially for non-ionic pollutants, the electroosmotic flow(EOF) is the most important removal mechanism among them and transports contaminants from anode to cathode along the water flow. In this study, characteristics of electroosmotic flow was investigated according to the resistance state of soil. The decrease, maintenance, and increase of soil resistance could be obtained by controlling ions in soil. When the resistance of soil was decreasing or maintained, the EOF is proportional to electric current and voltage, respectively and when the resistance was increasing, the EOF is proportional to only electric current not voltage.

  • The electrokinetically enhanced soil flushing had a great potential to improve the removal efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from low permeable soils. A semi-pilot study of surfactant-enhanced electrokinetic process was investigated for the removal of phenanthrene from kaolinite. A nonionic surfactant, Tergitol 15-S-12 at 10 g/L was introduced as a flushing agent and 0.001M of sodium chloride was used as an electrolyte. When the constant voltage of 100 V was applied to the system for 25 days, only 0.66 kWh of electric power was consumed and the amount of electroosmotic flow was 6.9 L. The removal efficiency of phenanthrene was about 40 % and it can be improved by increasing the ion concentration of the flushing solution or the applied voltage.

  • Clinical presentation of Bartter syndrome is similar to surrepitious vomiting or use of diuretics. Therefore, precise differential diagnosis of Bartter syndrome is crucial. We report a case of medullary nephrocalcinosis (MNC) induced by furosemide mimicking Bartter syndrome. A 55-year-old female patient visited our hospital with renal dysfunction on basis of hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis. She had no history of hypertension or drug use except allopurinol and atorvastatin. She did not complain of nausea or vomiting on presentation and the serum magnesium level was normal. We performed ultrasonography, that showed MNC. For these reasons, we suspected Bartter syndrome and corrected the electrolyte imbalance. During outpatient follow up, we found that the patient had been taking 400 mg of furosemide daily for 30 years. We could diagnose furosemide induced MNC, and recommended to her to reduce the amount of furosemide.

  • An impedance properties of the positive active material Li(Cr$_{0.4}$Mn$_{0.6}$)O$_2$ are measured by the changeable trend to the time. The charge-discharge capacities of 297 mAh(g)$^{-1}$ 175 mAh(g)$^{-1}$ are obtained by the made cell with the active material that the Cr was added to LiMnO$_2$ to prevent structural degradation of an electrode active material with impedance of 75 Ω to get at an initial hour. Resultantly, these variations which the impedances enhanced continually, were not watched the impeditive variations as the results of the delay time that the positive thin films and the references have been soaked all together in the solution of electrolyte of 1M LiPF$_{6}$ EC/DEC(l/2). Accordingly, it means an amount increased of the discharged capacities in the view of the results that the impeditive values were decreased are known already through a authorized paper.per.

  • Electro-conducting Polypyrrole(PPy) films were Prepared by applying constant current in various electrolytes solutions and their capacitance properties were investigated using cyclic voltammetry. Capacitance values were strongly dependent on the electrolytes solution used in electrochemical polymerization. PPy prepared in PC/AN mixture solution containing 0.5M $LiClO_4$ with small amount water showed 401 F/g and that electrogenerated in $AN/H_2O$ mixture solution containing 0.5M $LiClO_4$ retained $70\%$ of initial capacitance after 2000 cycles.

  • Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is safe and effective for the prevention and treatment of dehydration in children. It has been commercially available as a small packaging unit that needs to be taken with a specified amount of water. Intake of incorrectly formulated ORS results in side effects, such as electrolyte imbalance and upper gastrointestinal (GI) disturbance. We experienced a case of severe GI hemorrhage from gastric and duodenal ulcers in a previously healthy child following intake of incorrectly formulated ORS. GI hemorrhage in children is often life threatening and reaching a diagnosis may be challenging. Commercially manufactured packets of powdered oral rehydration salts have been widely used and GI hemorrhage associated with an improperly diluted ORS has been rarely reported. Caution and education for proper preparation of ORS are imperative.

  • An amphiphilic nitroxide radical(2,2'6,6'-tetramethyl-4-octadecyioxy-1-piperidinyloxyl, TEMOPO) or mixture of TEMOPO and arachidic acid(Icosanoic acid, AA), was spread on water surface by the Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) method and surface pressure-area curve was measured. Such monolayer films of TEMOPO were transferred onto surfaces of photo transferable tin oxide electrodes(PTTO) by the LB method under various surface pressure with the transfer ratio of larger than 0.95 at the surface pressure higher than 15mN/m. The electrochemical effect of functional nitroxy radical monolayer onto semi-conductive electrode to electrolyte have been investigated by using LB method. Cyclic voltammetry technique was used for the electrochemical behavior measurement of TEMOPO monolayer onto the PTTO in 0.18 mo1/$dm^3$ $H_2SO_4$ solutions. The shape of voltammograms was found to change from one electrode to another. The amount of charge for the oxidation and the re-reduction of the cation to TEMOPO were evaluated from graphical integration. The amounts of charge were always smaller than those predicted from the $\pi$-$\sigma$ curves though the transfer ratio was unity. The poor reproducibility of the cyclic voltammograms was improved by the mixing with AA. Structure and arrangement of monomolecular layer on water surface and electrode were studied. Characteristics of monolayer film applied for the mediation reaction was also discussed by electrochemical method.

  • This study was performed in order to investigate the effect of nifedipine, a vasodilating drug which acts through calcium antagonism, on renal function using mongrel dog. Nifedipine, when given interavenously in doses ranging from 1.5 to 5.0$\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, elicited diuresis along with less changes of glomerular filtration rate and significant increases of renal plasma flow, so that the filtration fraction(FF) decreased significantly, at the same time both osmolar and free water clearances increased, and amount of sodium, potassium and calcium excreted in urine increased significantly. Nifedipine, when infused into a renal artery in doses from 0.05 to 0.15$\mu\textrm{g}$/kg/min, exhibited identical responses to the actions of intraveneous nifedipine except significant increase of glomerular filtration rate and no change of FF, which was confined only to the infused kidney. The renal action of nifedipine into a renal artery were not influenced by renal denervation, decreased significantly by ouabain, Na$^+$-K$^+$-ATPase inhibitor, which was given into a renal artery. Nifedipine infused into a renal artery in dog pretreated with propranolol i.v. produced diuresis associated with the increase of electrolytes excretion by reduction of electrolyte reabsorption and with no changes of glomerular filtration rate and renal plasma flow. Thus, it is concluded that nifedipine infused into a renal aretery produces diuretic action along with both improvement of hemodynamics and inhibition of electrolytes reabsorption, which may be related to sympathetic $\beta$-receptor or Na$^+$-K$^+$-ATPase activity because the action of nifedipine in kidney is blocked by propranolol or ouabain.
