The use of electrokinetic injection and transport for the distribution of an NAPLs-degrading microorganism in a sandy soil bed was studied. After the injection of the cell into cathode side of bed, an electric current was applied. The transport of cell though the sandy soil was achieved by electokinetics, mainly by electrophoresis, The pH control in electrode chamber plays un important role to achieve desirable cell transport because H$^{+}$ generated at anode is toxic or inhibits the transport of cells. Electokinetic distribution rate of bacterial cells changed depending on the applied electric current and pH. The degradation of diesel by electrokinetically transport cells were monitored.d.

This study applied EK method to remediate contaminated soil by lead (Pb), tried increasing efficiency of remediation using adsorbent (apatite and zeolite) as enhanced EK remediation method to overcome the limit of traditional EK remediation method. Adsorption tests on Pb were practiced to extract EK, making different concentration of contaminated soil, voltage condition, operating time etc., transferring Pb-ion into the position of adsorbent, then tried immobilization. On this results, the efficiency of remediation is different on its test conditions. In addition, the efficiency of remediation was not only improved by adding electrode revεrsal and install position of adsorbent but also satisfied TCLP regulation of EPA in USA through the whole sample range. Finally, absorption and immobilization capacity of apatite and zeolite proved on its excellence and confirmed the possibility of application of apatite and zeolite as enhanced EK remediation method.
Pollution reduction and/or control technology becomes one of the pressing post-semiconductor research field to lead an advanced industrial structure. Soil/groundwater remediation techniques may act as a core technology which will create many demands on pollution reduction areas. A plenty numbers of abandoned metal mines were left without any remediation action in Korea, and it may be potential sources of heavy metal and As contamination in the ecosystem. In order to bring this soil contamination to a settlement, the emerging soil/groundwater remediation techniques should be introduced. Main research topics in the United States and Europe move towards the clean remediation technology without any secondary impact and the feasible application of developing technique into the field scale study. With these advantages, several soil/groundwater techniques such as electrokinetic soil processing, permeable reactive barrier, stabilization/solidification, biosorption, soil flushing with biosurfactant, bioleaching and phytoremediation will be summarized in this paper.

Soil can be contaminated by radioactive materials due to nuclide leakage following unexpected situations during the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant. Soil decontamination is necessary if contaminated land is to be reused for housing or industry. The present study classifies various soil remediation technologies into biological, physics/chemical and thermal treatment and analyzes their principles and treatment materials. Among these methods, this study selects technologies and categorizes the economics, applicability and technical characteristics of each technology into three levels of high, medium and low by weighting the various factors. Based on this analysis, the most applicable soil decontamination technology was identified.

This paper represents a set of experimental tests on remediation of nickel-contaminated kaolin by Electrokinetic method. For this purpose, we conducted unenhanced and EDTA-enhanced Electrokinetic tests in one, three, and five days of treatment. In unenhanced tests, we used deionized water as an electrolyte in the anode and the cathode compartments. In the EDTA-enhance tests, we used ethylenediaaminetetra acetic acid 0.1 Molar in the cathode and sodium hydroxide 0.1 Molar in the anode. The average nickel removal for unenhanced tests after three and five days of treatment was 19 and 23 percent, respectively. High buffer capacity of the soil is responsible for low removal efficiency in the unenhanced tests, which maintained pH close to the initial amount that restrained nickel as an adsorbed or precipitated forms. The average nickel removal for EDTA-unenhanced tests after three and five days of treatment was 22 and 12 percent, respectively. Lower ionic mobility of EDTA-Ni complex in comparison with $Ni^{+2}$, which is the main transportation mechanism for this complex, could be responsible for less removal efficiency in EDTA-enhanced test.

Removal of phenanthrene by electrokinetic method combined with Fenton-like process was studied in a model system. The scale of reactor was 100cm in length, 100cm in width, and 70cm in height. The distance between electrodes was 70cm. Indonesia kaoline was selected as a model soil. When constant voltage of 100 V was applied to this system, current decreased from 200 mA to 100 mA for 14 days. Total accumulated EOF was about 55,000 mL. The concentration of phenanthrene near anode was very low because direction of electroosmosis was from anode to cathode and hydrogen peroxide was supplied to anode reservoir. Phenanthrene concentration was increased as the location was far from anode because hydrogen peroxide was gradually decomposed and then the rate of hydroxyl radical production was decreased.

The electrokinetically enhanced soil flushing had a great potential to improve the removal efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from low permeable soils. A semi-pilot study of surfactant-enhanced electrokinetic process was investigated for the removal of phenanthrene from kaolinite. A nonionic surfactant, Tergitol 15-S-12 at 10 g/L was introduced as a flushing agent and 0.001M of sodium chloride was used as an electrolyte. When the constant voltage of 100 V was applied to the system for 25 days, only 0.66 kWh of electric power was consumed and the amount of electroosmotic flow was 6.9 L. The removal efficiency of phenanthrene was about 40 % and it can be improved by increasing the ion concentration of the flushing solution or the applied voltage.

H$_2$SO$_4$ and citric acid were used as additives for the electrokinetic remediation experiment to increase removal efficiency of $^{137}$ Cs and $^{60}$ Co from the radioactive soil waste stored for more than 10 years. The average effluent velocity discharged from the elctrokinectic remediation experimental column was 2.0${\times}$10$^{-2}$ cm/min and the discharged soil wastewater volume for 10 days is 3.6 pore volume of the column. 97% of $^{60}$ Co in the column was decontaminated for 10 days of operation, while only 54% of $^{137}$ Cs was decontaminated. These results are considered that the absorption equilibrium coefficient of $^{137}$ Cs is higher than that of $^{60}$ Co. The predicted values of the residual concentration by the proposed mathematical model were well coincided with the experimental results within the experimental error range

The electrokinetic bioremediation employing electrolyte circulation method was carried out for the cleanup of phenanthrene-contaminated kaolinite, and microorganism used in the biodegradation of phenanthrene was Sphingomonas sp. 3Y. The electrolyte circulation method supplied ionic nutrientsand the microorganism into soil, and inhibited the significant pH change of soil by increasing the soil buffering capacity by providing phosphate buffer compounds. When the remediation process was conducted without surfactant, the removal efficiency of phenanthrene, at the initial concentration of 200 ppm, was 69% for only 7 days. Higher microbial population and lower phenanthrene concentration were observed in the anode and middle regions of soil specimen than in the cathode region. The higher density of microorganism was because the microbial movement was in the direction of the anode part due to the negative surface charge. When Triton X-100 and APG of 20 g/1 were used to improve the bioavailability of phenanthrene strongly adsorbed onto soil surface, about 90 and 39% of phenanthrene removal were obtained. Consequently, it was confirmed that the microorganism preferred APC to phenanthrene as carbon source and so the removal efficiency with APG decreased less than that without APG.
A new method has been proposed and developed that solves the problem of decreasing electroosmotic flow rate by excess $H^{+}$ and precipitation of heavy metal by $OH^{-}$. An electrolytic solution was circulated between the anode and cathode compartments that enabled the pH at the anode and cathode to be controlled. The change of the soil pH by circulation systems affects the operation time, by lowering the rate of increase of the electric potential gradient, and the removal efficiency of heavy metals, by affecting the soil pH. Since there was no effluent from the cathode compartment in circulation system, there was no need to treat the wastewater after the experiment, which resulted in the reduction of influent electrolyte volume.
