In this paper, we propose a simple and relative electrode contact monitoring method. By exploiting the power line interference, which is regarded as one of the worst noise sources for bio-potential measurement, the relative difference in electrode impedance can be measured without a current or voltage source. Substantial benefits, including no extra circuit components, no degradation of the body potential driving circuit, and no electrical safety problem, can be achieved using this method. Furthermore, this method can be applied to multi-channel isolated bio-potential measurement systems and home health care devices under a steady measuring environment.
The thermal contact conductance at different temperatures and with different electrode forces and zinc coating morphology was measured by monitoring the infrared emissions from the one dimensionally simulated contact heat transfer experiments. The contact heat transfer coefficients were presented as a function of the harmonic mean temperature of the two contacting surfaces. Using these contact heat transfer coefficients and experimentally measured temperature profiles, the electrical contact resistivities both for the faying interface and electrode-workpiece interface were deduced from the numerical analyses of the one dimension simulation welding. It was found that the average value of the contact heat transfer coefficients for the material with zinc coating (coating weight from 0 g/$mm^2$to 100 g/$mm^2$) ranges from 0.05 W/$mm^2$$^{\circ}C$ to 2.0 W/$mm^2$$^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range above 5$0^{\circ}C$ harmonic mean temperature of the two contacting surfaces. The electrical contact resistivity deduced from the one dimension simulation welding and numerical analyses showed that the ratio of electrical contact resistivity at the laying interface to the electrical contact resistivity at the electrode interface is smaller than one far both bare steel and zinc coated steel.
In order to develop "textile electrode - sensing clothing" which is a sort of smart clothing to measure electric activities of heart, we propose possible ways to develop textile electrode and design of sensing clothing, ultimately aiming to develop "ECG sensing clothing for lifestyle monitoring". Conventional sensors for measuring typical electric activities of heart keep certain distance between measuring electrodes to measure signals for electric activities of heart, but these sensors often cause inappropriate factors (e.g. motional artifacts, inconvenience of use, etc) for monitoring natural cardiac activities in our daily life. In addition, most of textile electrodes have made it difficult to collect data due to high impedance and unstable contact between skin and electrodes. To overcome these questions, we minimized distance between electrodes and skin to maximize convenience of use. And in order to complement contact between skin electrodes, we modified textile electrode's form and developed ways to design clothing. As a result, we could find out clinical significance by investigating possible associations of clinical electrocardiogram (ECG) with variation of distance between electrodes, and could also demonstrate clinically significant associations between textile electrode developed herein and clothing.
This study concerns the design and development of the non-vibrating capacitance probe which could be used as a non-contact sensor for tribological wear. This device detects surface charge through temporal variation in the work function of a material. Experiments are performed to demonstrate the operation of the probe on a roating aluminum shaft. The reference electrode of the probe, made of lead, is placed adjacent (< 1.25-mm distance) to the shaft. Both surfaces which are electrically connected, form a capacitor. An artificial spatial variation in the work function is imposed on the shaft surface by coating a segment along the shaft circumference with a colloidal silver paint. As the shaft rotates, the reference electode senses changing contact potential difference with the shaft surface, owing to compositional variation. Temporal variation in the contact potential difference induces a current through the electrical connection. This current is amplified and converted to a voltage signal by an electoronic circuit with an operational amplifier. The magnitude of the signal decreases asymptotically with the electrode-shaft distance and increases linearly with the rotational frequency. These results are consistent with the theoretical model. Potential applications of the probe on wear monitoring are proposed.
Wearable medical device has been a resurgence of interest thanks to the development of technology and propagation of smart phone in recent years. Various types of wearable devices have been introduced and available in market. Capacitive coupled electrode which measures electrocardiogram over cloth is able to be applied wearable device. In previous approaches of capacitive electrode, they need proper pressure for stable contact of the electrode to body surface. However, wearable device that gives pressure on body surface is not suitable for long-term monitoring. In this study, we proposed adhesive polyurethane-based capacitive electrode for patch-type wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring device. Self-adhesive polyurethane make the electrode and whole system be adhered to the surface of skin without any pressure. The patch-type system is consisted of analog filter, analog-to-digital converter and wireless transmission module and designed to be attached on the body as a patch. To validate the feasibility of the developed system, we measured ECG signal in stable and active state and extracted heart rate. Therefore, we observed skin response after long-term attachment for biocompatibility of the adhesive polyurethane and adhesive strength of it. The result shows the possibility of applying the developed system for ECG monitoring in real-life.
Electrodes are an important part of electrocardiography (ECG); disposable electrodes have been extensively used. However, personal ECG monitoring devices for Internet of Things applications require reusable electrodes. As there have been no systematic studies on the characteristics of reusable electrodes to date, we conducted this study to assess the performance and feasibility of electrodes with different materials. We built reusable electrodes using twelve different metallic materials, including commonly used copper, silver, zinc, plating materials, chemically inert titanium, stainless steel, and aluminum. Each electrode was fabricated to a size of $5{\times}10mm$. Their characteristics such as offset, baseline drift, stabilization time, and chemical inertness were compared. A personal ECG monitoring system was used to test the manufactured electrodes. The performances of the Ag, Cu, and Zn electrodes were better than the performances of other electrodes. However, these materials may not be used owing to the chemical changes that occur when the electrodes are in contact with the skin, such as discoloration and corrosion, which deteriorate their electrical characteristics. Titanium, stainless steel, and aluminum are chemically stable. The titanium electrode showed the best performance among the three, and it is our recommendation as a material for manufacturing reusable electrodes.
Heart rate is one of the most important signal to monitor the health condition of the patient or exerciser. Various wearable devices have been developed for the continuous monitoring of ECG signal from human body during exercise. Among these, ECG chest belt has been widely used. However wearing chest belt with ECG sensor is uncomfortable in normal life due to the electrode contact between metal electrodes of ECG sensor and skin of the human body. So we develop the royal healthcare backpack that can measure ECG signal without skin contact by using capacitor-type ECG sensor. The position of the measurement point is critical to collect a clear ECG signal in the capacitive ECG measurement from backpack. Various tests were conducted to find the optimal ECG measurement position which has less noise and could get strong and clear ECG signal during exercise, walking, hiking, mountain climbing and cycling.
Many kinds of electrodes have been developed in various forms and shapes for measurement of bio potential signal. Textile electrode has benefit of collect long tenn data monitoring because of it is non-consciousness, convenient and do not occur skin irritation. However, It is very difficult to acquire available data due to high impedance of electrode and unstable skin-electrode contact which generate motion artifact. Also snap button which usually used as mediator between textile and measurement device cause change of electrical characteristics. In this paper, we inflated textile electrode to stabilize contact and add conductive silver paste between textile and snap button to improve conductance. To compare the performance of two methods, flat or inflated and add conductive paste or not, four types of electrodes are tested on each impedance and SNR by ECG measurement. In result, the first type electrode which flat and non-conductive paste showed the worst performance and the last type electrode which is inflated shape and contain conductive paste show the best performance.
