In this paper, analysis of thermal post-buckling behaviors of sandwich nanobeams with two layers of multi-phase magneto-electro-thermo-elastic (METE) composites have been presented considering geometric imperfection effects. Multi-phase METE material is composed form piezoelectric and piezo-magnetic constituents for which the material properties can be controlled based on the percentages of the constituents. Nonlinear governing equations of sandwich nanobeam are derived based on nonlocal elasticity theory together with classic thin beam model and an analytical solution is provided. It will be shown that post-buckling behaviors of sandwich nanobeam in thermo-electro-magnetic field depend on the constituent's percentages. Buckling temperature of sandwich nanobeam is also affected by nonlocal scale factor, magnetic field intensity and electrical voltage.
In this article, the multiphysics response of magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) cantilever beam subjected to thermo-mechanical loading is analysed. The equilibrium equations of the system are obtained with the aid of the principle of total potential energy. The constitutive equations of a MEE material accounting the thermal fields are used for analysis. The corresponding finite element (FE) formulation is derived and model of the beam is generated using an eight noded 3D brick element. The 3D FE formulation developed enables the representation of governing equations in all three axes, achieving accurate results. Also, geometric, constitutive and loading assumptions required to dimensionality reduction can be avoided. Numerical evaluation is performed on the basis of the derived formulation and the influence of various mechanical loading profiles and volume fractions on the direct quantities and stresses is evaluated. In addition, an attempt has been made to compare the individual effect of thermal and mechanical loading with the combined effect. It is believed that the numerical results obtained helps in accurate design and development of sensors and actuators.
In this paper, we introduce a more improved camera modeling method for linear pushbroom images than the method proposed by Orun and Natarajan(ON). ON model shows an accuracy of within 1 pixel if more than 10 ground control points(GCPs) are provided. In general, there is high correlation between platform position and attitude parameters but ON model ignores attitude variation in order to overcome such correlation. We propose a new method that obtains an optimal solution set of parameters without ignoring the attitude variation. We first assume that attitude parameters are constant and estimate platform position's. Then we estimate platform attitude parameters using the values of estimated position parameters. As a result, we can set up an accurate camera model for a linear pushbroom satellite scene. In particular, we can apply the camera model to its surrounding scenes because our model provide sufficient information on satellite's position and attitude not only for a single scene but also for a whole imaging segment. We tested on two images: one with a pixel size 6.6m$\times$6.6m acquired from EOC(Electro Optical Camera), and the other with a pixel size 10m$\times$l0m acquired from SPOT. Our camera model procedures were applied to the images and gave satisfying results. We had obtained the root mean square errors of 0.5 pixel and 0.3 pixel with 25 GCPs and 23 GCPs, respectively.

This paper compares the performance of lightning shielding analysis methods using the seven striking distance formulae in substation. For comparison, we evaluate the number of expected strikes and exposed area using WinIGS Software. Seven striking distance formulae are compared using the electrogeometric model analysis and the rolling sphere method. Based on the electrogeometric model analysis, the risk of shielding failure in either the whole substation or parts of it is determined. According to the simulation results, one can justify whether the substation satisfies the criterion of shielding design. In particular, according to the rolling sphere method, the exposed areas in substation determine the location of the additional shielding poles or shield wires. Therefore, the installation of the additional shielding poles and shield wires in substation was accepted by shield design at the phase conductors exposed in the larger area.
The concept of structural vibration control is to absorb vibration energy of the structure by introducing auxiliary devices. Various types of structural vibration control theories and devices have been recently developed and introduced into mechanical systems. One of such devices is damper employing controllable fluids such as ElectroRheological (ER) or MagnetoRheological (MR) fluids. MagnetoRheological (MR) materials are suspensions of fine magnetizable ferromagnetic particles in a non-magnetic medium exhibiting controllable rheological behaviour in the presence of an applied magnetic field. This paper presents the modelling of an MRfluid damper. The damper model is developed based on Newtonian shear flow and Bingham plastic shear flow models. The geometric parameters are varied to get the optimised damper characteristics. The numerical analysis is carried out to estimate the damping coefficient and damping force. The analytical results are compared with the experimental results. The results confirm that MR damper is one of the most promising new semi-active devices for structural vibration control.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the free vibration behavior of the micro sandwich beam composing of five layers such as functionally graded (FG) porous core, nanocomposite reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and piezomagnetic/piezoelectric layers subjected to magneto electrical potential resting on silica aerogel foundation. The effect of foundation has been taken into account using Vlasov model in addition to rigid base assumption. For this purpose, an iterative technique is applied. The material properties of the FG porous core and FG nanocomposite layers are considered to vary throughout the thickness direction of the beams. Based on the Timoshenko beam theory and Hamilton's principle, the governing equations of motion for the micro sandwich beam are obtained. The Navier's type solution is utilized to obtain analytical solutions to simply supported micro sandwich beam. Results are verified with corresponding literatures. In the following, a study is carried out to find the effects of the porosity coefficient, porous distribution, volume fraction of CNT, the thickness of silica aerogel foundation, temperature and moisture, geometric parameters, electric and magnetic potentials on the vibration of the micro sandwich beam. The results are helpful for the design and applications of micro magneto electro mechanical systems.

Petri dishes and glass slides have been widely used as general substrates for in vitro mammalian cell cultures due to their culture viability, optical transparency, experimental convenience, and relatively low cost. Despite the aforementioned benefit, however, the flat two-dimensional substrates exhibit limited capability in terms of realistically mimicking cellular polarization, intercellular interaction, and differentiation in the non-physiological culture environment. Here, we report a protocol of culturing embryonic rat hippocampal neurons on the electro-spun polymeric network and the results from examination of neuronal cell behavior and network formation on this culture platform. A combinatorial method of laser-scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy and live-cell imaging technique was employed to track axonal outgrowth and synaptic connectivity of the neuronal cells deposited on this model culture environment. The present microfiber-based scaffold supports the prolonged viability of three-dimensionally-formed neuronal networks and their microscopic geometric parameters (i.e., microfiber diameter) strongly influence the axonal outgrowth and synaptic connection pattern. These results implies that electro-spun fiber scaffolds with fine control over surface chemistry and nano/microscopic geometry may be used as an economic and general platform for three-dimensional mammalian culture systems, particularly, neuronal lineage and other network forming cell lines.
In this paper, the free vibrations of a short cylindrical nanotube made of piezoelectric material are studied based on the consistent couple stress theory and using the shear deformable cylindrical theory. This new model has only one length scale parameter and can consider the size effects of nanostructures in nanoscale. To model size effects in nanoscale, and considering the nanotube material which is piezoelectric, the consistent couple stress theory is used. First, using Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion and boundary condition of the piezoelectric cylindrical nanoshell are developed. Afterwards, using Navier approach and extended Kantorovich method (EKM), the governing equations of the system with simple-simple (S-S) and clamped-clamped (C-C) supports are solved. Afterwards, the effects of size parameter, geometric parameters (nanoshell length and thickness), and mechanical and electric properties (piezoelectric effect) on nanoshell vibrations are investigated. Results demonstrate that the natural frequency on nanoshell in nanoscale is extremely dependent on nanoshell size. Increase in size parameter, thickness and flexoelectric effect of the material leads to increase in frequency of vibrations. Moreover, increased nanoshell length and diameter leads to decreased vibration frequency.

Linear motor stage is a useful device in precision engineering field because of its simple power transmission mechanism and accurate positioning. Even though linear motor stage shows fine positioning accuracy along travel axis, geometric dependent errors which relay on machining and assembling accuracy should be addressed to increase total positioning performances. In this paper, we suggests a cost effective yaw error compensation servo-system which is mounted on platform of the stage and nullify travel position dependent yaw error. This paper also provides a method of designing a sliding mode control which is robust to existing friction disturbance and model uncertainties. The reachability condition of slinding mode control for the yaw error compensating servo-system has been established. From some experimental results by using an experimental set-up, the sliding mode control showed its effective in disturbance rejection and its performance was superior to conventional linear controls.

In this study, a cantilevered energy harvester comprising piezoelectric fiber and epoxy composites was designed and analyzed electro-mechanically. In order to maximize the power of the cantilevered energy harvester, its exciting frequency was tuned to the first natural frequency of the beam. An efficient analysis method for predicting the output voltage of the beam was developed by using the finite element method coupled with piezoelectric behavior. By using this method, the effects of geometric parameters and various piezoelectric materials on power generation were investigated and the electric characteristics were evaluated. Design optimization of the beam geometries was performed for a base model. The optimum MFC design generated a maximum electric output of 40.1 V at a first natural frequency of 24.5 Hz.
