In this study, we investigated the electro-optical(EO) characteristic of fringe-field switching(FFS) mode cell by the two kinds of ultraviolet(UV) alignment method on the organic thin film(polyimide: PI). The suitable organic layersfor FFS cell and the aligning capabilities of nematic liquid crystal(NLC) using the in-situ photoalignment method were studied Disclination is observed after conventional photoalignment method for 1h, and in-situ photoalignment method for 1h. Monodomain alignment of the NLC can be observed via in-situ photoalignment method for 2h and 3h. It is considered that NLC alignment is due to photo-depolymerization of the polymer with oblique non-polarized UV irradiation on PI surface. An unstable V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with conventional photoalignment method can be achieved. However, a stable V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situ photoalignment method(1h), and V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situphotoalignment method was much stable comparing with that of other UV-aligned FFS-LCD's. As a result, more stable EO performanceof UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situphotoalignment method for 3h is obtained than that of the other UV-aligned FFS-LCD's.

We studied the electro-optical (EO) performance in the vertical-alignment (VA) - l/4$\pi$ cell photoaligned with polarized UV exposure on a homeotropic photopolymer surfaces. Excellent voltage-transmittance curve in the VA - l/4$\pi$ cell photoaligned with polarized UV exposure for 3 min on the photopolymer containing cholesterol group of 8% can be achieved. The V-T characteristics in the VA-l/4$\pi$ cell photoaligned on the photopolymer surface can be improved by increasing cholesteryl group. For response time measurement, the transmittance characteristics of the VA-l/4$\pi$ cell photoaligned on the photopolymer surface was better than that of the VA-l/4$\pi$ cell rubbingaligned on a polyimide(Pl) surface.

We have investigated the Electro-Optical Characteristics for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using plastic substrates. It was found that monodomain alignment of NLC is obtained with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. EO characteristics of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on polymer are almost the same as that of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on glass. However, the transmittances of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on polymer is less than that with a rubbed PI surface based on glass.

In recent years, the merging of nanomaterials and nano-technology into electro-optic (EO) device technology such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs) has attracted much attention because of their unique electro- and magneto-optic properties and novel display applications. One example of hybrid LC-inorganic systems is semiconductor nanorods added to LC for their strong reorientation effect and tunable refractive index. Doping of nanoparticles in LC or polymers can lead to changes in performance characteristics such as electro-optical, dielectric, memory effect, phase behavior, etc. Due to the tunability of LCDs with mixed inorganic materials, low voltage operation of a LC system can also be achieved using the significant electro-optical effect achieved through suspension of ferroelectric nanoparticles in NLC.
In this study, the target detection using both high-resolution satellite SAR and Elecro-Optical (EO) images such as TerraSAR-X and WorldView-2 is performed, considering the characteristics of targets. The targets of our interest are featured by being stationary and appearing as cluster targets. After the target detection of SAR image by using Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) algorithm, a series of processes is performed in order to reduce false alarms, including pixel clustering, network clustering and coherence analysis. We extend further our algorithm by adopting the fast and effective ellipse detection in EO image using randomized hough transform, which is significantly reducing the number of false alarms. The performance of proposed algorithm has been tested and analyzed on TerraSAR-X SAR and WordView-2 EO images. As a result, the average false alarm for group of targets is 1.8 groups/$64km^2$ and the false alarms of single target range from 0.03 to 0.3 targets/$km^2$. The results show that groups of targets are successfully identified with very low false alarms.

The rising demand for the high efficiency and high covertness in UAV motivates the miniature design of the high performing mission sensors, or payloads. One of the promising payload sensors, EO/IR sensor has evolved satisfying its demands and became the main stand-alone mission sensor for 200kg-range UAV. One aspect in development of EO/IR sensor concerns lack of specification criterions to represent its performance. Even though the high demand and competition among each manufacturer caused EO/IR features subject to rapid change collateral to new technology, the datasheets maintained the conventional outdated formats which leave some of the major components in ambiguity. Making comparisons or predicting actual performance with such datasheets is hardly worthwhile; yet, they could be important reference guide for the potential customers what to expect for the upcoming EO/IR. According to UAS Roadmap 2007-2032 published by DoD, one of the main potential customers as well as a main investor of EO/IR technology, EO/IR is expected to play key roll in solving urgent problems, such as see and avoid system. This paper will examine the recent representative EO/IR specialized in UAS missions through datasheets to find out current trend and eventually extrapolate the possible future trend.
We synthesised a photo-alignment material of PM4Ch (poly(4-methacryloylloxychalcone)). The electro-optical (EO) characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with linearly polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on PM4Ch surface were investigated. The uniform alignment of NLC with polarized UV light irradiation on PM4Ch surface was measured. Also, We had The excellent voltage-transmittance characteristics of photo-aligned TN-LCD. The low threshold voltage of photo-aligned TN-LCD was measured. Moreover, the fast response time of photo-aligned TN-LCD on PM4Ch was successfully achieved. Finally The reduction DC voltage of photo-aligned TN-LCD decreases with increasing the UV light irradiation time on photo-dimerized PM4Ch surface.

A new photo-alignment material, copoly (PM4Ch-ChMA), copoly (poly (4-methacryloyloxy) chalcone-chalconemethacryl) was synthesized and the electro-optical (EO) characteristics for the photo-aligned vertically aligned (VA)-LC display (LCD) were investigated. The monodomain alignment of the NLC for the photo-aligned VA-LCD by linearly polarized UV exposure on the photo-dimerized copoly (PM4Ch-ChMA) surfaces was observed. Excellent voltage-transmittance characteristics for the photo-aligned VA-LCD by UV exposure for 1 min. on the copoly (PM4Ch-ChMA) surfaces were achieved. The response time of the photo-aligned VA-LCD by UV exposure on for 1 min. the copoly (PM4Ch-ChMA) surfaces was about 39.3 ms. The response time for the photo-aligned VA-LCD decreased with increasing UV exposure time.

It is widely investigated to liquid crystal (LC) alignment using non-contact alignment method such as ion-beam (IB) irradiation, UV alignment, and oblique deposition. Because conventional rubbing method has some drawbacks. These include defects from dust and electrostatic charges and rubbing scratch during rubbing process. In addition, rubbing method needs additional process to remove these defects. Therefore rubbing-free methods like ion-beam irradiation are strongly required. We studied LC alignment effect on poly imide surface by IB irradiation and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD). In this experiment, a good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with the ion-beam exposure on the polyimide (PI) (SE-150 from Nissan Chemical) surface was observed. We also achieved low pretilt angle as a function of ion-beam irradiation intensity. In addition, it can be obtained the good EO properties of the IB-aligned TN-LCD on PI surface. Some other experiments results and discussion will be included in the poster.
