In the present study, the effect of chemical treatment on graphite nanofibers (GNFs) supports with various concentrated nitric acids was investigated for methanol oxidation. To optimize the electrocatalytic activity, PtRu catalysts were deposited on GNF supports by impregnation method. The surface and structural properties of the GNF supports were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), element analyzer (EA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphology of the catalysts was observed by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrocatalytic activity of PtRu/GNF catalysts was investigated by cyclic voltammetry measurement. As a result, the oxygen functional groups were introduced on the GNF supports and were gradually increased with increasing of concentrated nitric acid, causing the smaller particle size and higher loading level. And the electrocatalytic activity of the catalysts for methanol oxidation was gradually improved. Consequently, it was found that chemical treatments could influence on surface properties of the carbon supports, resulting in enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of the catalysts for DMFCs.
The influence of the subsequent-annealing(SA) temperature on the plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO)-treated Mgbased alloy was investigated in terms of surface properties associated with hardness and corrosion. For this purpose, a series of the SA treatments were performed on the PEO-treated samples at four different temperatures, i.e., 100, 150, 200, and $250^{\circ}C$ for 10 hrs. When compared to the sample without SA, the samples annealed at temperatures higher than $200^{\circ}C$ showed a difference in surface morphology due to the volume expansion accompanied by the dehydration reaction where the part of $Mg(OH)_2$ changed into MgO, working as harder phase. From the results of nano-indentation tests, the applied loads of the samples were seen to increase with increasing SA temperatures. However, the electro-chemical and corrosion properties of the sample annealed at $150^{\circ}C$ were higher than those of the samples annealed at three temperatures.

In order to improve energy efficiency in the dilute trichloroethylene removal using the nonthermal plasma process, the barrier discharge treatment combined with manganese dioxide was experimentally studied. Reaction kinetics in this process was studied on the basis of final byproducts distribution. Decomposition efficiency was improved to about $99\;\%$ at the specific energy of 40 J/L with passing through manganese dioxide. C=C ${\pi}$ bond cleavage of TCE substances gave DCAC, which has the single bond of C-C through oxidation reaction during the barrier discharge plasma treatment. Those DCAC were broken easily in the subsequent catalytic reaction due to the weak bonding energy about $3{\sim}4\;eV$ compared with the double bonding energy in TCE molecules. Oxidation byproducts of DCAC and TCAA from TCE decomposition are generated from the barrier discharge plasma treatment and catalytic surface chemical reaction, respectively. Complete oxidation of TCE into COx is required to about 400 J/L, but $CO_2$ selectivity remains about $60\;\%$.
Electro-thermal production of white phosphorus(WP, P4) generates substantial amount of highly toxic phossy water and sludges. Because of their high phosphorus contents and lack of reliable processing technology, large tonnages of these hazardous wastes have accumulated from current and past operations in the United States. In this study, two different methods for treatment of phosphorus sludge were investigated. These were bulk removal of WP by physical separation(froth flotation) and transformation of WP to oxyphosphorus compounds by air oxidation in the sludge medium. Kerosene, among other collectors, resulted in selective flotation of WP from the associated mineral gangue. Solvent action of kerosene occurring on the WP surface(by rendering WP particles hydrophobic) might produce the high selectivity of WP. The WP recovery in the froth was 79.3% from a sludge assaying 34.2% of WP. In the oxidation study, air gas was dispersed in the sludge medium by the rapid rotation of the impeller blades. The high level of sludge agitation intensity caused a fast completion of the oxidation reactions and it resulted in the high percentage conversion of WP to PO4-3 with PO3-3 making up almost all portion of oxyphosphorus compounds. The WP analysis on the treated sludge showed that supernatant solution and solid residue contained an average of 4.2 μg/L and 143 ppm respectively from the sludge containing about 26 g of WP. Further investigation will be required on operational factors to better understand the processes and achieve an optimum condition.
In the electrolytic preparation of persulphate from sulphate solution, the current efficiency decrease with temperature increase at the platinum anode. But in case of electrodeposited lead peroxide anode, the current efficiency increase with temperature of the solution. The reason seems to be that the ozone formation is faster in platinum anode than in lead peroxide as temperature increase.
The oxidation behavior and the thermal stability of nanocrystalline Al-25Ti-8Mn intermetallic compound were investigated. $Al_3Ti$ intermetallic compound, which has a potential for high temperature structural material, was fabricated by mechanical alloying(MA) with $8at.\%$ Mn to enhance the thermal stability and ductility. And Al-25Ti-8Mn intermetallic compound was sintered by spark plasma sintering(SPS) at $700^{\circ}C$. After sintering process, cubic $Ll_2$ structure was maintained without phase transformation and the grain size was about 50nm. To investigate the oxidation behavior of the specimens, thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA) was performed at 700, 800, 900, and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 24 h in $O_2$. As the temperature increased from $700^{\circ}C\;to\;900^{\circ}C$ the weight gain of specimens increased. However at $1000^{\circ}C$, unlike the oxidation behavior of $700^{\circ}C\;to\;900^{\circ}C$, the weight gain of specimen decreased drastically and the transition from linear rate region to parabolic rate region occurred rapidly due to the dense $\alpha-Al_2O_3$.
In the industrial wastewater that occupies a large proportion of river pollution, the wastewater generated in textile, leather, and plating industries is hardly decomposable. Though dyeing wastewater has generally been treated using chemical and biological methods, its characteristics cause treatment efficiencies such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) and suspended solids (SS) to be reduced only in the activated sludge method. Currently, advanced oxidation technology for the treatment of dyeing wastewater is being developed worldwide. Electro-coagulation is highly adapted to industrial wastewater treatment because it has a high removal efficiency and a short processing time regardless of the biodegradable nature of the contaminant. In this study, the effects of the current density and the electrolyte condition on the COD removal efficiency in dyeing wastewater treatment by using electro-coagulation were tested with an aluminum anode and a stainless steel cathode. The results are as follows: (1) When the current density was adjusted to $20A/m^2$, $40A/m^2$, and $60A/m^2$ under the condition without electrolyte, the COD removal efficiency at 60 min was 62.3%, 72.3%, and 81.0%, respectively. (2) The removal efficiency with NaCl addition was 7.9% higher on average than that with non-addition at all current densities. (3) The removal efficiency with $Na_2SO_4$ addition was 4.7% higher on average than that with non-addition at all current densities.
