Stabilization and Characteristics of An Electro-optical BGO Voltage Sensor (BGO광전압 센서의 안정화 및 동작특성)

  • We present an electro-optical voltage sensor. Crystalline bismuth germanate(BI4Ge3O12) used as the electro-opticla crystal exhibited linear birefringences of 1.7x10**-5 to 5.4x10**-4. And these birefringences were observed to be strongly temperature dependent. In order to improve the stability of the electro-opticlal voltage sensor, crystals (Bi4Ge3=12) were annealed and a compensation method was used. After applying this compensation method to the voltage sensor, the temperature stability, pressure stability, and vibration stability of the sensor were highly improved, Noise Equivalent Voltage of this sensor was a few mV/\ulcornerz.

Electro-Optical Characteristics of an ICP Light Source Depending on Driving Temperature and Length of Discharge Tube (구동 온도와 방전관 길이에 따른 ICP 광원의 전기.광학적 특성)

  • We investigated the electro-optical characteristics of an ICP(Inductively Coupled Plasma) light source depending on driving temperature, and length of discharge tube. An electro-optical stability of a sample at operating was measured to see a steady state of a sample. In this results, we can see that a stability of power loss and luminous flux of a sample at operating of upper 70[min] was 1.45[%1 and 0.36[%]. We measured the optical characteristics of a sample in a thermal chamber operated at a specific temperature divided into 5 steps. While luminance increased with temperature increasing, the decrement of luminance a eared at u or $46.7[^{\circ}C]$. According to Parchen's and Boyle-Charles' law, we can speculate that a pressure was increased and a higher voltage was needed but a ballaster having a rating power can't support a higher voltage corresponding to a pressure change, 0.02[Torr] at $46.7[^{\circ}C]$. Moreover, we measured an a lied power and current of samples depending to a various length of a discharge tube.

Chemical Structural Effects of Polyimides on the Alignment and Electro-optical Properties of Liquid Crystal Cells

  • The nature of the nematic liquid crystal (LC) alignment induced by the rubbed polyimide (PI) alignment layers (ALs) and the electro-optical (EO) properties of the LC cells are expected to depend on the chemical and physical features of the PI. By employing five pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)-type PIs having different functionalities, we have studied the effects of the PI's structure and chemistry on the alignment characteristics and the cell's EO properties. Increasing the flexibility of the PI increases the pretilt angle and tends to improve the alignment stability. On the other hand, the rigid, fluorinated PI displays poor stability for LCs and induces a less stable/uniform LC alignment and, subsequently, a small pre tilt angle. It also transpired that fluorination of the PI deteriorated the voltage-transmittance characteristics and the voltage holding ratio; increasing the flexibility of the PI structure improves these EO properties. The finding that the qualitative trends for the PI's functionalities are similar for both the alignment and EO properties suggests that the EO properties are closely related to the alignment characteristics, which are determined by short-range interactions between LC and PI molecules.

Electro-optical Properties of Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Cell with Silver Nanowire Network Electrodes

  • This paper introduces liquid crystal (LC) alignment and its electro-optical properties in the LC cells with silver nanowire (AgNW) networks. The AgNW network was used as an electrode of LC cell as a substitute for an indium-tin-oxide (ITO) film. LC alignment characteristics in the LC cell using AgNW networks, which have two different sheet resistances of $60{\Omega}/m^2$ and $80{\Omega}/m^2$, were observed. The LC alignment characteristics including pretilt angle, LC alignment state, and thermal stability are similar irrespective of sheet resistance of AgNW network. However, twisted-nematic (TN)-LC cell normally operated when using AgNW network with sheet resistance of $80{\Omega}/m^2$. Electrooptical properties of TN-LC cell exhibited competitive performance compared to those of TN-LC cell based on conventional ITO electrode, which allow new approaches to replace conventional ITO electrode in display technology.

Study on thermal and UV stability of Liquid Crystal Display for Projection TV Application (프로젝션 TV 적용을 위한 액정 디스플레이의 열적 및 UV 안전성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we have investigated electro-optical characteristics of thermal and UV stressed TN cells on the rubbed polyimide surface. Mono-domain alignments of thermal stressed TN cells over temperature of liquid crystal isotropic phase were almost same that of no thermal stressed TN cells. Also, threshold voltage and response time of thermal stressed TN cells were same that of no thermal stressed TN cells. Finally, the residual DC voltage of the thermal stressed TN cell on the polyimide surface show decrease of characteristics as increasing thermal stress time. Therefore, thermal stability of TN cell was decreased by high thermal stress for the long times.

Investigation into the stability of ion beam treated inorganic alignment layer

  • Inorganic alignment layer (IAL) was deposited on an indium-tin-oxide (ITO) by using reactive sputtering deposition method. After deposited, IAL was irradiated by $Ar^+$ ion beam (IB) for liquid crystal (LC) alignment. IAL treated by various conditions such as IB energy, IB incident angle, and IB irradiation time had excellent alignment property and electro-optical property the same as that of PI. We investigated into the stability of ion beam treated IAL after a lapse of long time. However IAL irradiated IB did not occur degradation of electro-optical property. The results implied that IAL irradiated IB was adopted as LC alignment layer instead of rubbed polyimide.

Study on Thermal Stability of Liquid Crystal Display for Projection TV Application (프로젝션 TV 적용을 위한 액정 디스플레이의 열적 안정성에 관한 연구)

  • We have investigated electro-optical characteristics in three kinds of twisted nematic (TN) cells on the polyimide surface. The threshold voltage and the response time of thermal stressed TN cells were same that of no thermal stressed TN cells. There were little change of value in these TN cells. On the other hand, transmittance of no thermal stressed TN cells were better than that of thermal stressed TN cells. Transmittances of TN cells on the polyimide surface decreased by increasing thermal stress time. Moreover, the residual DC of the thermal stressed TN cells increased as increasing thermal stress temperature and time. Therefore, thermal stability of TN cells were decreased gradually by giving high thermal stress for a long time.

  • This paper proposes a new disturbance observer(DOB). The purpose of the DOB is to realize the plant performing like a model in the presence of disturbances which come from external environment and inherent nonlinearities and uncertainties in the plant. It is shown that the proposed DOB compensates those disturbances, nonlinearities and uncertainties, effectively. And it is theoretically proved that the proposed DOB can be guaranteed its stability for the stable plant. Its availability is shown by applying the DOB to the stabilization platform for EOTS(Electro Optical Tracking System).

  • We have studied effect of Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) mode on electro-optical characteristics and stability of liquid crystal director upon electrode pattering. In the present studies, LC director field and stability of conventional PVA mode electrode patterns were analyzed and new type of electrode patterns were suggested. At last, comparison between this new type of electrode patterns to conventional electrode pattern types were followed.
