  • Optically anisotropic rotating balls were disposed in a monolayer, and controllably closely packed with respect to one another in the monolayer. The close packed monolayer configuration provided high brightness and improved contrast. The monolayer rotating ball display (MRB) electrically demonstrated a fast response time of approximately 40 msec at a voltage of 30 V. Measurements of the rotation as a function of voltage led to surface charge density for the balls in the range of 3-4 ${\mu}C/m^2$.

  • 'Electronic paper (EP)' provides desirable viewing characteristics of paper with being thin, lightweight, flexible, and recordable with minimal power consumption. Currently, a number of different technologies to realize the EP are actively competing. Here we demonstrate a newly developed monolayer rotating ball (MRB) electronic paper display where optically anisotropic rotating balls were disposed in a monolayer, and controllably closely packed with respect to one another. The close packed monolayer configuration provides high brightness and improved contrast with better electrical and optical features in comparison with the typical (Gyrion) rotating ball display. In this talk, we present characteristics of the MRB display in terms of performance, with particular emphasis on the response time as a function of the electric field.

  • Electro-wetting display (EWD) that displays information by controling movement of fluid is one of the strong candidates for electronic paper display (EPD). In EWD cell. the movement of oil which locates between hydrophobic insulation layer and deionized water is rather random, which makes it difficult to realize gray scale, fast response time, and good color characteristics. In this paper, we investigated how to control the oil movement in specific one direction by surface treatment and pattered electrodes. From these experiments, we could control oil movement in a desired direction.

  • In this paper we proposed a new electrode design to get an enhanced luminous efficiency in AC PDP. The width and shape of the TTO electrode were varied, and the electro-optical properties such as luminance, power consumption, luminous efficiency were estimated with the variation of frequency, duty ratio and applied voltage. The discharge characteristics were investigated to explain the effect of the new electrode structure on the electro-optical properties.

  • Electrowetting display (EWD) is one of the strong candidates for electronic paper like display (EPD). However, in the conventional EWD, the oil movement occurs in random direction so that we can observe irregular distribution of contracted oil in the operation. To realize colorful display and achieve a fast response time, oil movement in the pixel should be directed in a specific direction. In this paper, we report the result of oil contraction with specified direction which is achieved by patterned electrode. From the experiments, we find that the oil movement depends on the portion of etched electrode area and study other influencing factors of patterned electrode on the oil movement.

  • Conventional hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal display (HAN-LCD) has several advantages on low operating voltage, fast response time and rubbing free on one substrate. We have fabricated a new hybrid aligned nematic display driven by fringe field. The new device exhibits much wider viewing: angle than that of the conventional HAN mode, owing to almost in-plane rotation of the LC director. Furthermore, we have developed the device that reveals more efficient electro-optic characteristics by placing common electrode on top and bottom substrates. In this paper, the electro-optic characteristics of the novel cell are investigated.

  • In this paper, we describe the electro-optic effects of photonic crystals made of a synthetic opal filled with a nematic liquid crystal(LC). By applying an external electric field, a shift in the Bragg reflection peak position(stop band) and a field-induced change in its peak reflectivity are observed. These significant surface alignment effects of the opal-LC composite are discussed in a similar manner for Freederick-type transitions of LC within a confined geometry in the presence of external fields.

  • Recently a study of Virtual-Reality becomes active. Expectation to 3-D reproduction technology rises with it. Electro-holography using Spatial light modulator (SLM) attracts attention, because natural 3-D animated image is provided. In this paper recent development of 3D-TV by Electro-holography is reported. We consider the conditions to holographic TV such as input, transmission and display systems. Also we consider about fast hologram calculation because It is important to execute hologram calculation at high speed to realize the real time electro-holography. Then we consider the possibility of real time holography.

  • In OLED vacuum evaporation process, the essential requirements include good uniformity of the film thickness over a glass substrate. And, it is commercially significant to improve the consuming efficiency of material of the evaporant which is deposited on the substrate because of high price of organic materials. In this paper, to achieve the better thickness uniformity and the better organic material consuming rate, a process optimization algorithm was developed by understanding vacuum evaporation process parameters that affect the material consuming efficiency and the uniformity of film thickness. Based on the method developed in this study, the vacuum evaporation process of OLED was successfully controlled. The developed method allowed the manufacture of high quality OLED displays with cheaper fabrication cost.
