In power transformers, vibration signals can occur at winding and core due to the change of current, voltage, and temperature and the deformation of winding and core. The deformation of winding and core occurs electromagnetic force induced by fault current in power systems. There firem the changes of vibration signals can be very different in normal or fault states of power transformers. We edtect and analyze the changes of vibration signals and use them as a tool for fault diagnosis of power transformers. This paper presents fault discriminating polliblility using the changes of fundamental waves and higher harmonics in power transformers. We showed the fault discriminating functions that are made at each case ; normal state and fault state. These functions are tested by the detected vibration signals, and we showed that the proposed method can discriminate the state of power transformers.

This paper presents a new numerical algorithm for fault location estimation and for faults recognition based on the synchronized phasors. The proposed algorithm is based on the synchronized phasor measured from the synchronized PMUs installed at two-terminals of the transmission lines. In order to discriminate the fault type, the arc voltage wave shape is modeled numerically on the basis of a great number of arc voltage records obtained by transient recorder. From the calculated arc voltage amplitude it can make a decision whether the fault is permanent or transient. The results of the proposed algorithm testing through computer simulation are given.
In 2007, 9,128 fires are attributed to electrical equipments. These fires resulted in 29 deaths and 262 injuries. Arc-faults were one of the major causes of these fires. When an unintended arc-fault occurs, it generates intense heat that can easily ignite surrounding combustibles. Conventional circuit breakers only respond to overloads, short circuits, and leakage currents. Therefore, the breakers do not protect against arcing conditions. This paper presents results obtained in experiments on ignition behavior of wire by series arc fault currents and techniques developed to detect the arc-faults. The developed technique was tested after installation to make sure they are working properly and protecting the circuit. If the developed arc detecting technique is applied, the electrical fires caused by an arc-fault can be reduced.
Electrical transmission and distribution networks must withstand an occasionally abnormal condition such as a fault, with prejudicial consequences for the line, transformers or generators. And the improvement of reliability and quality of the delivered power from an electric utility motivates the development of new technologies in power applications. As a part of these studies, the usefulness and utility of a superconduction fault current limiter(SFCL) are shown. The SFCL is applied to 22.9KV three-phase power system and performed short circuit studies. The verified quench characteristic of SFCL is adopted for fault simulation and the results are compared with those of system which have not SFCL.
When the current of the superconducting element exceeds its critical current by the fault occurrence, the quench of the high-$T_C$ superconducting fault current limiter (HTSC) comprising the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) occurs. Simultaneously, the magnetic flux in the iron core induces the voltage in each coil, which contributes to limit the fault current. In this paper, the fault current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL as well as the load voltage sag suppressing characteristics according to the flux-lock type SFCL's winding direction were investigated. To confirm the fault current limiting and the voltage sag suppressing characteristics of the this SFCL, the short-circuit tests for the simulated power system with the flux-lock type SFCL were carried out. The flux-lock type SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding was shown to perform more effective fault current limiting and load voltage sag suppressing operations through the fast quench occurrence right after the fault occurs and the fast recovery operation after the fault removes than the flux-lock type SFCL designed with the subtractive polarity winding.
The accurate estimation of a fault location is desired in distance protection schemes for transmission lines in order to selectively deactivate a faulted line. However, a typical method to estimate a fault location by calculating impedances with voltages and currents at relaying points may have errors due to various factors such as the mutual impedances of lines, fault impedances, or effects of parallel circuits. The proposed algorithm in this paper begins by extracting the fundamental phasor of the positive sequence currents from the three phase currents. The second-order difference of the phasor is then calculated based on the fundamental phasor of positive sequence currents. The traveling times of the waves generated by a fault are derived from the second-order difference of the phasor. Finally, the distance from the relaying point to the fault is estimated using the traveling times. To analyze the performance of the algorithm, a power system with EHV(Extra High Voltage) untransposed double-circuit transmission lines is modeled and simulated under various fault conditions, such as several fault types, fault locations, and fault inception angles. The results of the simulations show that the proposed algorithm has the capability to estimate the fault locations with high speed and accuracy.
An open circuit fault diagnostic method in IGBTs for the ac to dc converters used in microgrid applications is developed in this paper. An ac to dc converter is a key technology for microgrids in order to interface both distributed generation (DG) and renewable energy resources (RES). Also, highly reliable ac to dc converters are necessary to keep converters in continuous operation as long as possible during power switch fault conditions. Therefore, the proposed fault diagnostic method is developed to reduce the fault detection time and to avoid any other fault alarms because continuous operation is desired. The proposed diagnostic method is a combination of the absolute normalized dc current technique and the false alarm suppression algorithm to overcome the long fault detection time and fault alarm problems. The simulation and experimental results show that the developed fault diagnostic method can perform fault detection within about one cycle. The results illustrate that the reliability of an ac to dc converter interfaced with a microgrid can be improved by using the proposed fault diagnostic method.
This paper presents a modified adaptive fading EKF (AFEKF) for sensor fault detection and isolation in the satellite. Also, the fault detection and isolation (FDI) scheme is developed in three phases. In the first phase, the AFEKF is modified to increase sensor fault detection performance. The sensor fault detection and sensor selection method are proposed. In the second phase, the IMM filer with scalar penalty is designed to detect wherever actuator faults occur. In the third phase of the FDI scheme, the sub-IMM filter is designed to identify the fault type which is either the total or partial fault. An important feature of the proposed FDI scheme can decrease the number of filters for detecting sensor fault. Also, the proposed scheme can classify fault detection and isolation as well as fault type identification.
The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) applied into the neural line of a power system, which can limit the unsymmetrical fault current from the single-line ground fault or the double-line ground fault, was reported to be the effective application location of the SFCL in a power system. However, the limiting operation for the symmetrical fault current like the triple line-ground fault is not effective because of properties of the balanced three-phase system. In this paper, the limiting method of the symmetrical fault current in a power system with a SFCL applied into neutral line was suggested. Through the short-circuit experiments of the three-phase fault types for the suggested method, the fault current limiting and recovery characteristics of the SFCL in the neutral line were analyzed and the effectiveness of the suggested method was described.
