With the increase of electrical consumption and the unbalance of power demand and supply, power reserve rate is getting smaller and also the reliability of the power supply is getting deteriorated. Under this circumstance, the electrical energy storage (EES) System is considered as one of essential countermeasure for demand side management. This paper proposes efficient evaluation algorithms of multiple functions for EES systems, especially the secondary battery energy storage systems, in the case where they are interconnected with the power distribution systems. It is important to perform the economic evaluation for the new energy storage systems in a quantitative manner, because they are very costly right now. In this paper, the multiple functions of EES systems such as load levelling, effective utilization of power distribution systems and uninterruptible power supply are classified, and then the quantitative evaluation methods for their functions are proposed. From the case studies, it is verified that EES systems installed at distribution systems in a dispersed manner have multiple functions involved with direct and indirect benefits and also they can be expected to introduce to distribution systems with respects to economical point of view.

In the operation of distribution systems, DGs (Distributed Generations) are installed as an alternative to extension and the establishment of substations, transmission and distribution lines according to the increasing power demand. In the operation planning of DGs, determining optimal capacity and allocation achieves economical profitability and improves the reliability of power distribution systems. This paper proposes a determining method for the optimal number, size and allocation of DGs in order to minimize the operation costs of distribution systems. Capacity and allocation of DGs for economical operation planning duration are determined to minimize total cost composed with power buying cost, operation cost of DGs, loss cost and outage cost using the GA (Genetic Algorithm).
This paper identifies the issues of contingency analysis for restoration in distribution systems. Contingency analysis has been applied to transmission systems but not to distribution systems. The distribution system is different from transmission system. So it is hard to apply for existing contingency analysis to distribution system. In this paper, a new contingency analysis method for distribution systems is proposed. The proposed method is based on service restoration capability. It aims to minimize outage left after service restoration in case of a fault in advance. The method estimates the vulnerability which is represented by zone restoration index proposed in [1]. Applying the proposed method, operators could change the system so that it does not leave any outage left after restoration. Case study has been carried out on a five feeder system and its results show effectiveness of the method.
This paper analyses the power flow of a three-feeder/multi-bus distribution system by a custom Generalized Power Quality Conditioner (GUPQC). The GUPQC has been realized by three voltage source converters (VSCs) coupled back-to-back through a common DC-link capacitor on the DC-side. One feeder was controlled by the shunt compensator, whereas each of the other two feeders was controlled by the proposed novel series compensator. The GUPQC has the capability to simultaneously compensate voltage and current quality problems of a multi-bus/three-feeder distribution system. Besides that, the power can be transferred from one feeder to other feeders to compensate for poor power quality problems. Extensive simulation studies were carried out by using MATLAB/SIMULINK software to establish the ability of the GUPQC to improve power quality of the distribution systems under distorted supply voltage conditions.

The importance of improving the quality of electric power is being strongly raised, owing to an increasing use of sensitive and small-sized electronic devices and systems. The transient over-voltages on low-voltage power distribution systems are induced by direct or indirect lightning return strokes. These can cause damage and/or malfunction of the utility systems for home automation, office automation, factory automation, medical automation, etc. The behaviors of lightning overvoltages transferred through the transformer to the low-voltage distribution systems using a Marx generator were experimentally investigated. Furthermore, the coupling mechanisms of lightning overvoltages transferred to the low-voltage systems were clearly illustrated through a theoretical simulation using a Pspice program. The overvoltages in low-voltage ac power systems are rarely limited by the application of the surge arrester to the primary side of the distribution transformer. A superior surge protection scheme is to install surge protection devices at the service entrance switchboard and/or at the load devices in TN power systems.
This paper proposes a stochastic modeling of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) distribution in power systems, and analyzes the corresponding clustering characteristic. It is essential for power utilities to estimate the PEV charging demand as the penetration level of PEV is expected to increase rapidly in the near future. Although the distribution of PEVs in power systems is the primary factor for estimating the PEV charging demand, the data currently available are statistics related to fuel-driven vehicles and to existing electric demands in power systems. In this paper, we calculate the number of households using electricity at individual ending buses of a power system based on the electric demands. Then, we estimate the number of PEVs per household using the probability density function of PEVs derived from the given statistics about fuel-driven vehicles. Finally, we present the clustering characteristic of the PEV distribution via case studies employing the test systems.
Transmission system has been well studied since long time and power system techniques of distribution system are more or less derived from transmission system. However, unlike transmission systems, many practical issues are encountered in the distribution system. Considerable amount of error is observed in voltage obtained from the Feeder Remote Terminal Units (FRTUs) measured by the pole mounted PTs along the distribution feeder. Load uncertainty is also an issue in distribution system. Further, penetration of Distributed Generators (DGs) creates voltage variations in the system. Hybrid radial/ loop distribution system also make it complicated to handle distribution system. How these constraints to be handled under Distribution Automation (DAS) environment in order to obtain error free voltage is described in this paper and therefore, a new approach of voltage error correction technique has been proposed. The proposed technique utilizes reliable data from substation and the FRTUs installed in DAS. The proposed technique adopts an iterative process for voltage error correction. It has been tested and proved accurate not only for conventional radial systems but also for loop distribution systems.

Unbalanced systems, such as distribution systems, have difficulties in fault locations due to single-phase laterals and loads. This paper proposes new fault locations developed by the direct three-phase circuit analysis algorithms using matrix inverse lemma for the line-to-ground fault case and the line-to-line fault case in unbalanced systems. The fault location for balanced systems has been studied using the current distribution factor, by a conventional symmetrical transformation, but that for unbalanced systems has not been investigated due to their high complexity. The proposed algorithms overcome the limit of the conventional algorithm using the conventional symmetrical transformation, which requires the balanced system and are applicable to any power system but are particularly useful for unbalanced distribution systems. Their effectiveness has been proven through many EMTP simulations.
With the development of industry and the improvement of living standards, better quality in power electric service is required more than ever before. This paper deals with the optimal algorithms for voltage regulation in the case where Distributed Storage and Generation (DSG) systems are operated in distribution systems. It is very difficult to handle the interconnection issues for proper voltage managements, because the randomness of the load variations and the irregular operation of DSG should be considered. This paper proposes the optimal on-line real time voltage regulation methods in power distribution systems interconnected with the DSG systems. In order to deliver suitable voltage to as many customers as possible, the optimal sending voltage should be decided by the effective voltage regulation method by using artificial neural networks to consider the rapid load variation and random operation characteristics of DSG systems. The simulation results from a case study show that the proposed method can be a practical tool for the voltage regulation in distribution systems including many DSG systems.
