  • Recently, community welfare centers including the elderly welfare centers are also interested in the issue of loneliness and are attempting a comprehensive approach to care for the elderly in the community. The problem is that there is a need for volunteers who are sustainable, but trained semi-professionals rather than non-professionals.Therefore, ways to provide education programs that can be based on continuous supplementation and specialization of manpower and to apply them to the field are being sought. The purpose of this study is to present a plan through examples with the aim of linking college students majoring in social welfare as a major resource for preventing loneliness of elderly people living alone in local communities through volunteer activities. It was suggested that volunteer activities of college students majoring in social welfare should be provided more systematically to the elderly living alone in the community.

The most needed service was community alarm service which currently is proceeded partially for low-income and living-alone olders. It needed to expand the scope of the people to be served. It appeared that the need for inside safety measures rather than for housing space or structural problems. It requires less effort and cost for those who need simple repair, such as safety grips or slippery protection, and safety checks. Among financial support services, the need for tax benefits appeared the most necessary service for the older people. It suggested that more 'direct' financial support service is needed for the elderly people.

  • This study examined the factors affecting the preference for the elderly's mental health services utilization in rural areas. A behavior model developed by Andersen and Newman provided an analytical framework to determine the factors affecting service utilization preferences among 335 elderly people as research subjects. The authors found that the preferences for mental health service utilization were significantly related to the level of education, living alone, presence of grandchildren, participation in social activities, and recognition about the services. Based on the findings, this study suggests that more mental health services for the elderly in rural areas be further developed and strengthened. Also, the elderly who lives alone and lives with grandchildren should have a priority in policy consideration. Multiple approaches are suggested to increase the awareness of mental health services and participation social activities for those older people.

  • As the number of elderly people living alone has been increasing in the recent years, systems for their safety have been required, and some related services or pilot systems have been operating. These systems provide the monitoring service for the activities of the elderly people living alone with indoor location tracking technology using the various sensors. However, most systems provide services on expensive infrastructure such as attached tags and mobile devices. In this point, this paper attempts to suggest a system based on low cost sensors to collect event data in home environment. And a main characteristic of the system is that people can monitor the results of provided services through web browser in real time and the system can provide related context information to guardians and health care managers through SMS of mobile phone.

This system is implemented by collecting various PHR biometric signals and residential environment information through IoT devices. In addition, the company aims to establish a basic infrastructure that can understand the situation of lonely deaths and implement prevention programs by strengthening the predictive ability through data analysis of the DB server based on PHR and information collected from IoT sensors. The sensor consists of an environmental information collection sensor and a noncontact and wearable sensor for biometric signal collection. A gateway is required to transmit the collected data to the server, and the prototype is presented in this paper. The paper has a discussion purpose of policy task for expanding medical welfare service. The results of this study are believed to help expand services to the socially marginalized and improve the medical environment of the people.
