  • The correct computer simulation of the powder compaction stage requires the determination of the elastoplastic parameters which characterize its mechanical behavour. Instrumented dies are frequently used to monitor the longitudinal and radial stress occurring during powder compaction. When strain gages are employed a previous calibration is needed. Many sources of error exist that can lead to the incorrect calibration of the instrumented die. By means of a FEM simulation some of these problems are analysed. The effect of die wall thickness, compression length, and strain location are studied.

  • In this study, inelastic displacement ratios and ductility demands are investigated for SDOF systems with period range of 0.1-3.0 s. with elastoplastic behavior considering soil structure interaction. Earthquake motions recorded on different site conditions such as rock, stiff soil, soft soil and very soft soil are used in analyses. Soil structure interacting systems are modeled with effective period, effective damping and effective ductility values differing from fixed-base case. For inelastic time history analyses, Newmark method for step by step time integration was adapted in an in-house computer program. Results are compared with those calculated for fixed-base case. A new equation is proposed for inelastic displacement ratio of interacting system ($\tilde{C}_R$) as a function of structural period of interacting system ($\tilde{T}$), strength reduction factor (R) and period lengthening ratio ($\tilde{T}/T$). The proposed equation for $\tilde{C}_R$ which takes the soil-structure interaction into account should be useful in estimating the inelastic deformation of existing structures with known lateral strength.

  • Vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides) is being effectively used in many countries to protect embankment and slopes for their characteristics of having long and strong roots. In this paper, in-situ shear tests of the ground with the vetiver roots have been conducted to investigate the stabilization properties corresponding to the embankment slopes. Numerical analyses have also been performed with the finite element method using elastoplastic subloading $t_{ij}$ model, which can simulate typical soil behavior. It is revealed from field tests that the shear strength of vetiver rooted soil matrix is higher than that of the unreinforced soil. The reinforced soil with vetiver root also shows ductile behavior. The numerical analyses capture well the results of the in-situ shear tests. Effectiveness of vetiver root in geotechnical structures-strip foundation and embankment slope has been evaluated by finite element analyses. It is found that the reinforcement with vetiver root enhances the bearing capacities of the grounds and stabilizes the embankment slopes.

  • A simple numerical method is applied to calculate the large deflection of a cantilever beam under an elastic-plastic deformation by dividing the deformed axis into a number of small segments. Assuming that each segment can be approximated as a circular arc, the method allows large deflections and plastic deformation to be analyzed. The main interests are the load-deflection relationship, curvature distribution along the beam and the length of the plastic region. The method is proved to be easy and particularly versatile. Comparisons with other studies are given.

  • This paper is to predict quality deterioration resulting from a caulking process of yoke which is a part of automotive steering system. The caluking is a plastic deformation process involving such as impact of high speed tool, contacts between part and fixtures and strain rate sensitivity of the part material. Elaborate application of finite element method is neccesary to calculate changes of part dimensions because they fall into a level of tolerances. Simple work hardening and strain rate sensitive model is proposed fur the material and applied for the simulation by using Abaqus which is able to cater for elastoplastic rate sensitive material and contacts. Numerical results of test models that represent tensile bar and tensile plate are compared with material data inputs. Dimensional changes for the yoke are calculated from simulations and compared to the mesurements and they show good agreement. The method presented here with the material model proved to be valuable to assess quality deterioration for similar metal forming processes.

  • In general, the nonlinear behavior of composite structures composing of steel and concrete is analyzed on the basis of the assumption of the perfect bond actions in steel-concrete interface in which the interface slip or separation is not allowed. The assumption is based on the fact that the full interface bond behavior is provided with the mechanical connectors of studs. However, since the number and spacing of the studs are determined by the stress resultants calculated in the interface area, the interface analysis is required to evaluate the stress resultants. This paper describes the nonlinear steel-concrete interface behavior considering the two interface failure mechanisms of slip and separation. Elastoplastic constitutive relation is developed. thru the formulation framework using the two energy dissipation mechanisms. As the result, the steel plate push-out tests sandwitched between concrete blocks are analyzed and compared with the test results with which the good agreements are observed.

  • Densification behavior of iron powder under cold stepped compaction was studied. Experimental data were also obtained for iron powder under cold stepped compaction. The elastoplastic constitutive equation based on the yield function of Shima and Oyane was implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to simulate compaction responses of iron powder during cold stepped compaction. Finite element results were compared with experimental data for densification, deformed geometry and density distribution.

  • Arched openings are generally excavated in underground construction works. Since stress distribution around openings depends on geological structure in rock mass, any shape of arched openings fully conformed with in-situ stress condition should be recommended to maintain mechanical safety of structures. Shape of arched openings is specified by both roof curvature and height-width ratio, and especially this report presents deformation behaviors related with roof curvature. Scale model tests and numerical studies of various shaped openings are conducted, where rectangular opening shows the greatest convergence. Through the anlayses of various arched opengings, as radius of roof curvature is increased, roof lowering and sidewall closure are remarkably increased, whereas floor heaving is increased little by little. By the way, it is useful that displacements of openings are roughly estimated in the stage of preliminary investigation. To find out elastic displacements of arched openings with any roof curvature, regressional formula and charts by least square method are represented. In addition elastoplastic deformation behavoirs of arched openings concerning associated adn non-associated flow rule are discussed.

  • In this paper, static nonlinear analysis of gable frame is performed using OpenSees software. Both geometric and material nonlinearities are considered in analyses. To consider large displacements, co-rotational coordinate transformation is used in software. The effects of symmetric and asymmetric support conditions including clamped and simple supports are studied. On the other hand, the material nonlinearity is reflected on analyses using Giuffre-Menegotto-Pinto steel material. Note that strain hardening characteristics are also considered in this model. Moreover, I-shaped cross-section is assumed for all members. The results are provided for different geometry properties of gable frame including shallow and deep inclined roof. It should be added that buckling and post-buckling behaviors of gable frame are investigated using related equilibrium paths. A comparison study is also implemented on the responses of buckling loads obtained for different support and geometry conditions. To trace snap-through paths completely, a displacement control method entitled arc-length is utilized. Findings show the capability of proposed model in nonlinear analysis of gable frames.
