In this paper, the fatigue behaviour of typical axisymmetric forward extrusion die is investigated and extrusion process is analyzed by the rigid-plastic finite element method and elasto-plastic finite element method. To approach the crack problem involving crack initiation and propagation in extrusion die, LEFM(Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics) is introduced and singular element which models stress.strain singularity in the crack tip vincity has been used to obtain an accurate stress intensityu factor values and other results. Form the displacement around the crack tip the stress intensity factor and the effective stress intensity factor at the beginning of the die inlet radius has been calculated. Applying proper fatigue crack propagation criterion such as Paris/Erdogan fatigue law to this data the angle and direction of fatigue crack growth has been simulated and these are compared with some experimental results. Using the computed crack growth rate, fatigue life of the extrusion die has been evaluated.
It is important to understand the characteristics of material strength and fracture under the dynamic loading like as earthquakes to assure the integrity of welded structures. The characteristics of dynamic strength and fracture in structural steels and their welded joints should be evaluated based on the effects of the strain rate and the service temperature. It is difficult to predict or measure temperature rise history with the corresponding stress-strain behavior. In particular, material behaviors beyond the uniform elongation can not be precisely evaluated, though the behavior at large strain region after the maximum loading point is much important for the evaluation of fracture. In this paper, the coupling phenomena of temperature and stress-strain fields under the dynamic loading was simulated by using the finite element method. The modified rate-temperature parameter was defined by accounting for the effect of temperature rise under the dynamic deformation, and it was applied to the fully-coupled analysis between heat conduction and thermal elastic-plastic behavior. Temperature rise and stress-strain behavior including complicated phenomena were studies after the maximum loading point in structural steels and their undermatched joints and compared with the measured values.
Finite-element analysis based on elastic-perfectly plastic material was conducted to examine the influence of structural deformations on collapse loads of circumferential through-wall critically cracked $90^{\circ}$ pipe bends undergoing in-plane closing bending and internal pressure. The critical crack is defined for a through-wall circumferential crack at the extrados with a subtended angle below which there is no weakening effect on collapse moment of elbows subjected to in-plane closing bending. Elliptical and semioval cross sections were postulated at the bend regions and compared. Twice-elastic-slope method was utilized to obtain the collapse loads. Structural deformations, namely, ovality and thinning, were each varied from 0% to 20% in steps of 5% and the normalized internal pressure was varied from 0.2 to 0.6. Results indicate that elliptic cross sections were suitable for pipe ratios 5 and 10, whereas for pipe ratio 20, semioval cross sections gave satisfactory solutions. The effect of ovality on collapse loads is significant, although it cancelled out at a certain value of applied internal pressure. Thinning had a negligible effect on collapse loads of bends with crack geometries considered.

A numerical method for perdicting the behavior of a reinforced concrete column under biaxial loading is proposed, using the layered finite element method. Concrete is assumed to exhibit strain softening and steel reinforcement is elastic-plastic. The bending theory assumptions are used and bond slip of reinforcement is meglected. To perdict the entire load-deformation characteristics, displacement control method is used. This method consider not only combined effect due to axial load and bending moment but also that due to bending moments. Predicted behaviors of reinforced concrete columns under biaxial loading through the numerical method proposed in this study show good agreements with test results.
Fracture resistance curves for concerned materials are required in order to perform elastic-plastic fracture mechanical analyses. Fracture resistance curve is built with J-integral values and crack extension values. The objective of this paper is to apply the load ratio method to the measurement of the crack length for the real scale pipe specimen. For these, the fracture test using the real scale pipe specimen and finite element analyses were performed. A 4-point bending jig was manufactured for the pipe test and the direct current potential drop method and the load ratio method was used to measure the crack extension and the length for the real scale pipe test. Finite element analyses about the compliance of the pipe specimen were executed for applying the load ratio method according to the crack length.
Applying the method calculating creep of Concrete Filled steel Tube (CFT) members based on the Elastic Continuation and Plastic Flow theory for concrete creep with the finite element method, the paper develops a new numerical method for the creep of CFT arch bridges considering effects of bending moment. It is shown that the method is feasible and reasonable through comparing the predicted stresses and deflection caused by the creep with the results obtained by the method of Gu et al. (2001) based on ACI209R model and experimental data of an actual CFT arch bridge. Furthermore, nine CFT arch bridges with different types are calculated and analyzed with and without the effects of bending moment. As a result, the bending moment has considerable influences on long-term deformations and internal forces of CFT arch bridges, especially when the section of arch rib is subjected to a large bending moment.
The most cost-effective method of reducing abrasive wear in mechanical parts is increasing their hardness with thin hard coatings. In practice, the composite hardness of the coated substrate is more important than that of the substrate or coating. After full unloading of the load applied to an indenter, its indentation hardness evaluated based on the dent created on the test piece was almost dependent on plastic deformation of the substrate. Following the first part of this study, which proposes a new Brinell hardness test method for a coated surface, the remainder of the study is focused on practical application of the method. Indentation analyses of a rigid sphere and elastic-perfect plastic materials were performed using finite element analysis software. The maximum principal stress and plastic strain distributions as well as the dent shapes according to the substrate yield stress and coating thickness were compared. The substrate yield stress had a significant effect on the dent size, which in turn determines the Brinell hardness. In particular, plastic deformation of the substrate produced dents regardless of the state of the coating layer. The hardness increase by coating behaved differently depending on the substrate yield stress, coating thickness, and indentation load. These results are expected to be useful when evaluating the composite hardness values of various coated friction surfaces.

Failure of connecting rod in automotive engine may cause catastrophic situation. The corner radius at small end has an effect on stress raising. To investigate the stress distribution in connecting rod during operation, the finite element analysis was used by giving possible maximum tension and compression. Excessive sizing after forging connecting rod may result in the tensile residual stress which lower the fatigue life and cause premature failures. It was shown that when the sizing amount is too large, the location of high tensile residual stress coincide with that of high stress amplitude during operation through the elastic-plastic finite element analysis. The endurance limit moves down due to the surface finish and decarburization, which combines with the movement of resultant stress points to dangerous range. It was concluded that the precise control of sizing and enough corner radius are necessary to a reliability of connecting rod.
The paper presents theoretical and experimental investigations on three varying thickness circular cylinders, which were tested to destruction under external hydrostatic pressure. The five buckling theories that were presented were based on inelastic shell instability. Three of these inelastic buckling theories adopted the finite element method and the other two theories were based on a modified version of the much simpler von Mises theory. Comparison between experiment and theory showed that one of the inelastic buckling theories that was based on the von Mises buckling pressure gave very good results while the two finite element solutions, obtained by dividing the theoretical elastic instability pressures by experimentally determined plastic knockdown factors gave poor results. The third finite element solution which was based on material and geometrical non-linearity gave excellent results. Electrical resistance strain gauges were used to monitor the collapse mechanisms and these revealed that collapse occurred in the regions of the highest values of hoop stress, where considerable deformation took place.
The drawbead is used to control material flow into the die during the binder wrap process and the stamping process in the sheet metal forming process. Since the dimension of drawbead is relatively small in comparison with the typical dimensions, it is difficult to include drawbeads in finite element analysis of the sheet metal forming process. It is because the mesh system has to be fine enough to describe the drawbead and the computation time is drastically increased. In this paper, simulation of drawbead forming has been carried out to obtain the equivalent boundary conditions in the binder wrap process and the stamping process. In order to investigate the effect of various die geometries, parameter studies are performed with the variation of parameters such as the blank length, the drawbead depth, the drawbead radius, the inclination of die and the friction coefficient.
