Measurement of elastic constants is crucial for engineering aspects of predicting the behavior of materials under load as well as structural health monitoring of material degradation. Ultrasonic velocity measurement for material properties has been broadly used as a nondestructive evaluation method for material characterization. In particular, pulse-echo method has been extensively utilized as it is not only simple but also effective when only one side of the inspected objects is accessible. However, the conventional technique in this approach measures longitudinal and shear waves individually to obtain their velocities. This produces a set of two data for each measurement. This paper proposes a simultaneous sensing system of longitudinal waves and shear waves for elastic constant measurement. The proposed system senses both these waves simultaneously as a single overlapped signal, which is then analyzed to calculate both the ultrasonic velocities for obtaining elastic constants. Therefore, this system requires just half the number of data to obtain elastic constants compared to the conventional individual measurement. The results of the proposed simultaneous measurement had smaller standard deviations than those in the individual measurement. These results validate that the proposed approach improves the efficiency and reliability of ultrasonic elastic constant measurement by reducing the complexity of the measurement system, its operating procedures, and the number of data.
The electro-magneto- thermo-elastic behavior of a rotating functionally graded long hollow cylinder with functionally graded piezoelectric (FGPM) layers is analytically analyzed. The layers are imperfectly bonded to its inner and outer surfaces. The hybrid cylinder is placed in a constant magnetic field subjected to a thermo-electro-mechanical loading and could be rested on a Winkler-type elastic foundation. The material properties of the FGM cylinder and radially polarized FGPM layers are assumed to be graded in the radial direction according to the power law. The hybrid cylinder is rotating about its axis at a constant angular velocity. The governing equations are solved analytically and then stresses, displacement and electric potential distribution are calculated. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the effects of material in-homogeneity, magnetic field, elastic foundation, applied voltage, imperfect interface and thermo-mechanical boundary condition on the static behavior of a FG smart cylinder.
The stochastic finite element method is employed to obtain a stochastic dynamic model of angled beams subjected to impact loads when uncertain material properties are described by random fields. Using the perturbation technique in conjunction with a precise time integration method, a random analysis approach is developed for efficient analysis of random elastic waves. Formulas for the mean, variance and covariance of displacement, strain and stress are introduced. Statistics of displacement and stress waves is analyzed and effects of bend angle and material stochasticity on wave propagation are studied. It is found that the elastic wave correlation in the angled section is the most significant. The mean, variance and covariance of the stress wave amplitude decrease with an increase in bend angle. The standard deviation of the beam material density plays an important role in longitudinal displacement wave covariance.

An ultrasonic resonance scattering spectroscopy technique is developed and applied for reconstructing elastic constants of a transversely isotropic cylindrical component. Immersion ultrasonic measurements are performed on tube samples made from a boron/aluminum composite material to obtain resonance frequencies and dispersion curves of different guided wave modes propagating in the tube. Theoretical analysis on the acoustic resonance scattering from a transversely isotropic cylindrical tube is also performed, from which complete backscattering and resonance scattering spectra and theoretical dispersion curves are calculated. A sensitive change of the dispersion curves to the elastic properties of the composite tube is observed for both normal and oblique incidences; this is exploited for a systematic evaluation of damage and elastic constants of the composite tube samples. The elastic constants of two boron/aluminum composite tube samples manufactured under different conditions are reconstructed through an optimization procedure in which the residual between the experimental and theoretical phase velocities (dispersion curves) is minimized.
Unidirectional fiber-metal matrix composites have superior mechanical properties along the longitudinal direction. However, the applicability of continuous fiber reinforced MMCs is somewhat limited due to their relatively poor transverse properties. Therefore, the transverse properties of MMCs are significantly influenced by the properties of the fiber/matrix interface. In this study, the interfacial stress states of transversely loaded unidirectional fiber reinforced metal matrix composites investigated by using elastic-plastic finite element analysis. Different fiber volume fractions $(5-60\%)$ were studied numerically. The interface was treated as thin layer (with different properties) with a finite thickness between the fiber and the matrix. The fiber is modeled as transversely isotropic linear-elastic, and the matrix as isotropic elastic-plastic material. The analyses were based on a two-dimensional generalized plane strain model of a cross-section of an unidirectional composite by the ANSYS finite element analysis code.

This study modeled the compressive strength and elastic modulus of hardened cement that had been treated with an expansive additive to reduce shrinkage, in order to determine the mechanical properties of the material. In hardened cement paste with an expansive additive, hydrates are generated as a result of the hydration between the cement and expansive additive. These hydrates then fill up the pores in the hardened cement. Consequently, a dense, compact structure is formed through the contact between the particles of the expansive additive and the cement, which leads to the manifestation of the strength and elastic modulus. Hence, in this study, the compressive strength and elastic modulus were modeled based on the concept of the mutual contact area of the particles, taking into consideration the extent of the cohesion between particles and the structure formation by the particles. The compressive strength of the material was modeled by considering the relationship between the porosity and the distributional probability of the weakest points, i.e., points that could lead to fracture, in the continuum. The approach used for modeling the elastic modulus considered the pore structure between the particles, which are responsible for transmitting the tensile force, along with the state of compaction of the hydration products, as described by the coefficient of the effective radius. The results of an experimental verification of the model showed that the values predicted by the model correlated closely with the experimental values.
Magnetostrictive materials have nonlinear elasto-magnetic properties. However the constitutive equations to describe the nonlinear properties are not available, yet. In this study we develope the equation in magnetostrictive materials by use of piezomagnetic constitutive equation which is quasi-linearized. With the wave equation, we determine the propagation velocity inside the magnetostrictive materials when a plane wave propagates along a given magnetic field. Validity of the calculated velocity is verified through comparison with experimental velocity measurement results for the most representative magnetostrictive materials. Terfenol-D.
Green's functions are obtained in exact closed-forms for the elastic fields in bi-material elastic solids with slipping interface and differing transversely isotropic properties induced by concentrated point and ring force vectors. For the concentrated point force vector, the Green functions are expressed in terms of elementary harmonic functions. For the concentrated ring force vector, the Green functions are expressed in terms of the complete elliptic integral. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the effect of anisotropic bi-material properties on the transmission of normal contact stress and the discontinuity of lateral displacements at the slipping interface. The closed-form Green's functions are systematically presented in matrix forms which can be easily implemented in numerical schemes such as boundary element methods to solve elastic problems in computational mechanics.

Both the resonance and ultrasonic techniques are standard methods far characterizing the physical properties of piezoelectric materials. However, we found that each technique can only offer a few reliable measurements while the rest often have errors or impossible to implement because of the sample requirements. This paper show that one can use the combination of both techniques to achieve much better accuracy and be able to get the complete set of elastic, dielectric and piezoelectric coefficients using fewer samples. Using an ultrasonic spectroscopy we have also measure the dispersion of the ultrasonic velocity and the attenuation up to 65 MHz. Pb(Zr,Ti)O$_3$[PZT] ceramics were used as examples fur both studies.

In this paper, the elastic modulus and hardness of poly 3C-SiC thin films growed by APCVD were measured using nanoindentation test. The resulting values of elastic modulus E and hardness H of the poly 3C-SiC film are 305 GPa and 26 GPa, respectively. The mechanical properties of the poly 3C-SiC film are better than bulk Si wafers. Therefore, the poly 3C-SiC thin film is suitable for abrasion resistance, high frequency, and bio MEMS applications.
