Plate buckling is very important design criteria when the ship is composed of high tensile steel plates. In general, the plate element contributes to inplane stiffness against the action of inplane load. If the inplane stiffness of the plating decreases due to buckling including the secondary buckling, the flexural rigidity of the cross section of a ship's hull also decreases. In these cases, the precise estimation of plate's behaviour after buckling is necessary, and geometric nonlinear behaviour of isolated plates is required for structural system analysis. In this connection, the author investigated the geometric nonlinear behaviour of simply supported rectangular plates under uniaxial compression in the longitudinal direction in which the principle of minimum potential energy method is employed. Based on the energy method, elastic large deflection analysis of isolated palate is performed and simple expression are derived to discuss the bifurcation paint type buckling and limit point type buckling.
Tunneling in rocks having the time-dependent behavior, causes some difficulties like tunnel convergence and, as a result, pressure on concrete lining; and so instability on this structure. In this paper the time-dependent behaviour of squeezing phenomenon in a large cross section tunnel was investigated as a case study: Alborz tunnel. Then, time-dependent behaviour of Alborz tunnel was evaluated using FLAC2D based on the finite difference numerical method. A Burger-creep viscoelastic model was used in numerical analysis. Using numerical analysis, the long-time effect of squeezing on lining stability was simulated. This study is done for primary lining (for 2 years) and permanent lining (for 100 years), under squeezing situations. The response of lining is discussed base on Thrust Force-Bending Moment and Thrust Force-Shear Force diagrams analysing. The results determined the importance of consideration of time-dependent behaviour of tunnel that structural forces in concrete lining will grow in consider with time pass and after 70 years can cause instability in creepy rock masses section of tunnel. To show the importance of time-dependent behavior consideration of rocks, elastic and Mohr-Coulomb models are evaluated at the end.
The elastic seismic response of plan-asymmetric multi storey steel-frame buildings is investigated under earthquake loading with particular emphasis on forward-rupture directivity and fling records. Three asymmetric building systems are generated with different torsional stiffness and varying static eccentricity. The structural characteristic of these systems are designed according to UBC 97 code and their seismic responses subjected to a set of earthquake records are obtained from the response history analysis (RHA) as well as the linear static analysis (LSA). It is shown that, the elastic torsional response is influenced by the intensity of near-fault ground motions with different energy contents. In the extreme case of very strong earthquakes, the behaviour of torsionally stiff buildings and torsionally flexible buildings may differ substantially due to the fact that the displacement envelope of the deck depends on ground motion characteristics.

When we numerically model the bridge under seismic condition, the full model combining the super-structure and the sub-structure is considered for the more accurate results than the separate model. In this case, the super-structure is connected with the sub-structure by the elastic pad shoe that is difficult to model, because it has the three translational elastic stiffness and the three rotational elastic stiffness. The two-node General Link element is derived in finite element equation representing such a pad shoe, and it is verified by comparing the one General Link element model with the corresponding three legacy spring element model. It is easy to model the pad shoe, if the General Link finite element is used. And the seismic analysis result of the bridge full model structure, which is modeled with the General Link element, has been compared with the one of the separate model structure. The present study gives. more conservative result than that of the separate model, which does not consider the dynamic behaviour of the sub-structure.

In this article, the influence of small scale effects on the free vibration response of curved magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded (MEE-FG) nanobeams has been investigated considering nonlocal elasticity theory. Power-law is used to judge the through thickness material property distribution of MEE nanobeams. The Euler-Bernoulli beam model has been adopted and through Hamilton's principle the Nonlocal governing equations of curved MEE-FG nanobeam are obtained. The analytical solutions are obtained and validated with the results reported in the literature. Several parametric studies are performed to assess the influence of nonlocal parameter, magnetic potential, electric voltage, opening angle, material composition and slenderness ratio on the dynamic behaviour of MEE curved nanobeams. It is believed that the results presented in this article may serve as benchmark results in accurate analysis and design of smart nanostructures.
An oscillator of two lumped masses linked through a vertical spring moves forward in the horizontal direction, initially at a certain height, over a horizontal Euler beam and descends on it due to its own weight. Vibration of the beam and the oscillator is excited at the onset of the ensuing impact. The impact produced by the descending oscillator is assumed to be either perfectly elastic or perfectly plastic. If the impact is perfectly elastic, the oscillator bounces off and hits the beam a number of times as it moves forward in the longitudinal direction of the beam, exchanging its dynamics with that of the beam. If the impact is perfectly plastic, the oscillator (initially) sticks to the beam after its first impact and then may separate and reattach to the beam as it moves along the beam. Further events of separation and reattachment may follow. This interesting and seemingly simple dynamic problem actually displays rather complicated dynamic behaviour and has never been studied in the past. It is found through simulated numerical examples that multiple events of separation and impact can take place for both perfectly elastic impact and perfectly plastic impact (though more of these in the case of perfectly elastic impact) and the dynamic response of the oscillator and the beam looks noisy when there is an event of impact because impact excites higher-frequency components. For the perfectly plastic impact, the oscillator can experience multiple events of consecutive separation from the beam and subsequent reattachment to it.
The cross sections of hollow cylindrical tubes ovalise under a pure bending condition, and this reduces their flexural stiffness as their curvatures increase. It is important to accurately evaluate this phenomenon, known as the 'Brazier effect', to understand the bending behaviour of the systems considered. However, if the tubes are supported by an elastic medium or foundation, the ovalisation displacements of their cross sections may decrease. From this point of view, the purpose of this research is to analytically investigate the bending characteristics of single- and double-walled elastic tubes contacted by an elastic material by considering the Brazier effect. The Brazier moment, which is the maximum moment-carrying capacity of the ovalised cross section, can be calculated by introducing the strain energy per unit length of the tube in terms of the degree of ovalisation for the tube and the curvature. The total strain energy of the double-walled system is the sum of the strain energies of the outer and inner tubes and that of the compliant core. Results are comparatively presented to show the variation in the degree of ovalisation and the Brazier moment for single- and double-walled tubes.

In various attempts to relate the behaviour of highly-elastic liquids in complex flows to their rheometrical behaviour, obvious candidates for study have been the variation of shear viscosity with shear rate, the two normal stress differences $N_1$ and $N_2$, especially $N_1$, and the extensional viscosity $\eta_E$. In this paper, we shall be mainly interested in 'constant-viscosity' Boger fluids, and, accordingly, we shall limit attention to $N_1$ and $\eta_E$. We shall concentrate on two important flows - axisymmetric contraction flow and "splashing" (particularly that which arises when a liquid drop falls onto the tree surface of the same liquid). Modern numerical techniques are employed to provide the theoretical predictions. It is shown that the two obvious manifestations of viscoelastic rheometrical behaviour can sometimes be opposing influences in determining flow characteristics. Specifically, in an axisymmetric contraction flow, high $\eta_E$ can retard the flow, whereas high $N_1$ can have the opposite effect. In the splashing experiment, high $\eta_E$ can certainly reduce the height of the so-called Worthington jet, thus confirming some early suggestions, but, again, other rheometrical influences can also have a role to play and the overall picture may not be as clear as it was once envisaged.
Soil disturbance induced by installation of mandrel driven vertical drains decreases the in situ horizontal hydraulic conductivity of the soil in the vicinity of the drains, decelerating the consolidation rate. According to available literature, several different profiles for the hydraulic conductivity variation with the radial distance from the vertical drain, influencing the excess pore water pressure dissipation rate, have been identified. In addition, it is well known that the visco-plastic properties of the soil also influence the excess pore water pressure dissipation rate and consequently the settlement rate. In this study, a numerical solution adopting an elastic visco-plastic model with nonlinear creep function incorporated in the consolidation equations has been developed to investigate the effects of disturbed zone properties on the time dependent behaviour of soft soil deposits improved with vertical drains and preloading. The employed elastic visco-plastic model is based on the framework of the modified Cam-Clay model capturing soil creep during excess pore water pressure dissipation. Besides, nonlinear variations of creep coefficient with stress and time and permeability variations during the consolidation process are considered. The predicted results have been compared with V$\ddot{a}$sby test fill measurements. According to the results, different variations of the hydraulic conductivity profile in the disturbed zone result in varying excess pore water pressure dissipation rate and consequently varying the effective vertical stresses in the soil profile. Thus, the creep coefficient and the creep strain limit are notably influenced resulting in significant changes in the predicted settlement rate.
Over the years the investigation of behaviour of piles in groups connected to a cap in consolidating soil has attracted far less attention than the study of isolated piles in groups. In this paper, a series of three-dimensional numerical simulations have been performed to study the behaviour of pile groups connected to a cap in consolidating ground. Both elastic no-slip and elasto-plastic slip analyses were considered. Based on the analysis results, when piles were connected to a cap, tensile forces were developed near the pile head at the outer piles. Elastic solution and no-slip analysis over-predicted the tensile force near the pile head for outer piles. Relatively speaking, the number of piles in a group is more important than the pile spacing in terms of the influence of negative skin friction on the pile behaviour. The issue on the development of tensile forces on the pile head at the outer piles is perhaps needed to be carefully considered in the pile design to prevent the damages of the pile-cap connection.
