A large volume of hatching jar was tested whether it is an effective to hatch fertilized eggs of Pacific cod. The volume of hatching jar did not show any significant differences in survival of the fertilized eggs; 48.3% for the jar of 15 L and 50.4% for that of 42 L. Survival rate of the fertilized eggs in a large volume of hatching jar ranged from 40.0 to 71.2%, which was higher than those of conventional small circular tank. A higher survival could be achieved even though stocking density of fertilized eggs was as high as 5,000 mL/jar. Consequently, the tested hatching jar allowed for incubation of a greater number of eggs with higher survival rate in a much smaller space. In addition, it reduces costs and manpower, and requires a relatively small amount of water per individual unit (6,700 mL/min), and provides a way to incubate multiple rearing groups in a quarantine environment.
Black plaice, Pleuronectes obscurus (Herzenstein), were collected and fertilized to observe egg development, temperature-related cleavage rates, and mitotic intervals (${\tau}_0$). Fertilized egg was demersal, adhesive, and did not contain oil globules. After 1.75 h, the blastodisc formed, and hatching took place 121 h after fertilization at $14^{\circ}C$. The hatched larvae were $3.5{\pm}0.16\;mm$ in total length. At higher temperatures, eggs developed faster and underwent further identical developmental processes. Additionally, ${\tau}_0$ and water temperature were strongly negatively correlated at all temperatures (Y=-2.6981X+98.767, $R^2$=0.9831, where Y is ${\tau}_0$, and X is temperature) for black plaice.
Floating and hatching rates, size and survival activity index(SAI) of spawned eggs of red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara were studied to understand egg qualities during the spawning periods in 1992, 1993 and 1995. The fish spawned from mid-July to mid-August when temperature ranged 23~$28^\circC$. Floating, fertilization and hatching rates were higher in the eggs from early to middle than those from late during the spawning period. SAI ranged 1.8~9.6, and it was closely related to survival rate until mouth operning time (SMOT). Egg diameter decreased gradually with the time of spawning, while diameter of oil globule was constant during the spawning periods. Induced spawnings were carried out with one injection of HCG over 5, 000 IU/kg body weight. Floating, fertilization and hatching rates of the induced spawning eggs were higher than those of untreated ones. Thus, induced spawning method with HCG was recommended for collecting fertilized eggs in bulk. Optimal time for the collection of high quality eggs was supposed to be from early to middle during the spawning periods. Considering that egg qualities were vulnerable within the period, hatchability, incidence of malformed larvae, SMOT and SAI were factors to be considered together to get good quality of eggs.
This study was carried out to clarify the egg, larvae and juveniles development of Carassius cuvieri in Nakdong River, Gyeongbuk. The amount of spawning of female C. cuvieri was about 30,400~44,900 (average 37,650±7,250). The egg shape was circular and the size was 1.24~1.37 mm (average 1.31±0.04 mm, n=30). At 100 hours after fertilization, more than of the total embryos were hatched. The newly hatched larvae had an 4.69~5.65 mm in total length (average 5.15±0.31 mm, n=10) and had egg yolk in the abdomen. At 3 days after hatching, the preflexion larvae absorbed all egg yolk was 6.27~6.70 mm in total length (average 6.59±0.08 mm, n=10). On the 10 days after hatching, the postflexion larvae were 8.71~8.92 mm in total length (average 8.81±0.07 mm, n=10), and the tip of the caudal fin was bent at 45°. On the 42 days after hatching, the total length of 15.1~16.8 mm (average 15.8±0.57 mm, n=10) was transferred to juvenile as the number of fins was (iii17 dorsal fins, iii4 anal fins) reached a constant number of each part.
Spawning induction, egg development and larval growth of ark shell (Tegillarca granosa) (L.) were investigated. The most effective method of spawning induction was steady temperature increasing from$4^{\circ}C\;to\;28^{\circ}C$ with irradiation of sea water by UV after T. granosa was exposed to air at $4^{\circ}C$ Optimum condition for larval roaring was under the 32.4 psu and two temperature $regimes:\;28{\pm}1^{\circ}C\;and \;25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Fertilized eggs was demersal isolated eggs, and egg diameter was $60{\mu}$. D-shaped larvae appear about 20 hr after hatching with $94.1{\mu}$ in shell length and $86.7{\mu}$ in shell height. Ten days were required from hatching to umbo larva stage, of a mean shell length $125.2{\mu}$. On 25th day, the larva grew to $450{\mu}$ in shell length and began to settle on the bottom. Effect of temperature between $25^{\circ}C$ (control group) and $28^{\circ}C$ on larval growth was not different. Survival rate of larvae settled on the bottom was about $19{\%}$ in both temperatures conditions $(25^{\circ}C\;and\;28^{\circ}C)$.
Wolbachia, vertically transmitted bacterial endosymbionts, is known to induce cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI), parthenogenesis, or feminization in some insect species. The Wolbachia found to exist symbiotically as a non-virulent form in Drosophila melanogaster, however popcorn is a lethal strain of Wolbachia, which causes tissue degeneration and early death of its adult host. Popcorn-infected flies showed the delayed duration of an egg and larvae, and their pupal period and life span reduced. The oviposition and egg-hatching rate of popcorn-infected flies were decreased 15% and 80%, respectiv~ly, compared to those of the normal Wolbachia-infected flies. The pupation and emergence rates of popcorn-infected flies were 67% and 65%, respectively. When popcorn-infected flies were crossed with Wolba-chia-infected flies, and vice versa, both crosses resulted in a significant reduction in egg production, egg¬hatching, pupation, and emergence rate, and their progeny revealed the popcorn syndrome. When popcorn-infected male flies were crossed with uninfected females, popcorn was not detected in their progeny. Popcorn also maternally transmitted in flies, but it did not induce CI and affected on its host life cycle as a virulence.

Lysobacter capsici YS1215 isolated from soil previously showed nematicidal potential for biological control of the root-knot nematode. In this study, lactic acid, a nematicidal compound, was isolated from culture filtrate of YS1215, and its ovicidal activity was investigated. Purification and identification of lactic acid were performed by a series of column chromatographies and identified by $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR spectra and GC-MS analysis. Our results showed that bacterial culture filtrate containing lactic acid significantly inhibited egg hatching. The lowest egg hatch rate (5.9%) was found at a high concentration ($25 {\mu}l/ml$) of lactic acid at 5 days after incubation, followed by 20 (15.2%), 15 (23.7%), 10 (29.8%), and $5(36.4%){\mu}l/ml$, while egg hatching in the control (sterile distilled water) was 44.5%. This is the first report of lactic acid as an ovicidal compound, and it may be considered as an alternative of chemical pesticide against root-knot nematodes.
The effects of dark-control (D) and continuous green light (GL) exposure of incubated meat-type breeder eggs (Hybro) on embryonic growth from 5 to 15 days of age, hatching time, hatchability per cent and chick hatching weight were investigated in three consecutive experiments at 33, 38, and 41 weeks of age. A total of 798 eggs were used in this study. Eggs were set in an incubator on trays either in the D or under two tubes of 20-watt green fluorescent light during the first 18 days of incubation. Eggs from both treatments were transferred to the dark hatching compartment at 19 days of incubation. The light intensity was in the range of 1,340 to 1,730 lux at the surface of the eggs. GL incubation of eggs significantly (p<0.01) increased weight (expressed as an absolute value) and daily weight gain of embryos at 11 and continued to 15 days of age, hatchability per cent by 4.8%, reduced dead embryos per cent and chick weight at hatch by 37 and 2%, respectively and accelerated hatching time by about 24 h when compared with the D-control incubation. Chicks hatched at 504 h of incubation had significantly (p<0.01) higher body weight, expressed as an absolute value or as a percentage of egg weight, than those hatched earlier at 456 h of incubation. It was concluded that the GL incubation of meat breeder eggs reduced incubation period and chick weight at hatch and increased embryonic growth and hatchability per cent.
This study was conducted to determine whether the difference in egg hatching temperature of Korea Reeves' turtle (Mauremys reevesii) at the artificial nursery of Seoul National Grand Park affects the incubation period and growth. A total of 201 eggs were incubated at 26 ℃ (n=89), 28 ℃ (n=75) and 32 ℃ (n=37). The incubation period of eggs showed significant differences according to the hatching temperature. In this study, the higher the hatching temperature, the higher the hatching rate. The incubation period of the eggs hatched at 26 ℃, 28 ℃ and 32 ℃ was 66.1 (±4.0, n = 52) days, 65.3 (±3.3, n = 44) days and 58.8 (±7.7, n = 31) days, respectively. Eggs incubated at 32 ℃ (83.8%) had a higher hatching success than those at 26 ℃ (58.4%) and 28 ℃ (58.7%). The body mass of 14-day-old hatchlings incubated at 32 ℃ was greater than those incubated at 26 ℃ and 28 ℃. However, there was no significant difference in the mean body mass of 180 and 270-day-old turtles hatched at these different temperatures. This study showed that the hatching temperature significantly affected the incubation period and body mass in the early life of the Korea Reeves' turtle (M. reevesii).

This study aims to investigate egg quality changes and free amino acid composition. Factors that can affect egg quality about farming conditions were investigated through biochemical analysis of egg by red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara. As a result, the buoyant, fertilization embryonic survival and hatching rate were better when reared in sea cage than in tank. And the content of free amino acid in fertilized eggs reared in sea cage was higher then in tank. In conclusion, fertilized eggs with good egg quality can be produced when farming sea cage, and contained more free amino acid.
