Ion exchange performance to remove nitrate in water was studied using commercially available strong base anion exchange resin of Cl- type in the batch and continuous column reactors. The performance was tested using the effluent concentration histories for continuous column or equilibrium conquilibrium between resin and solution. Anion exchange resin used in this study was more effective than activated carbon or zeolite for nitrate removal. With large resin amount or low initial concentration, nitrate removal characteristics for a typical gel-type resin was Increased. On considering the relation between the breakthrough capacity and nitrate concentration of the influent, the use of anion exchange resin were suitable for the hi선or order water treatment. The nitrate removal of above 90% could be possible until the effluent of above 650 BV was passed to the column. Thus, the commercially available strong base anion exchange resin of $Cl^-$ type used in thins study could be effectively used as economic material for treatment of the groundwater. The breakthrough curves showed the sequence of resin selectivity as $SO_4^{2-}$ > $NO_3$ > $NO^{2-}$ > $HCO_3^-$. The results of this study could be scaled up and used as a design tool for the water purification system of the real groundwater and surface water treatment processes.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate integrated anaerobic hydrogen fermentation and membrane bioreactor (MBR) for on-site domestic wastewater treatment and resource recovery. A synthetic wastewater (COD 17,000 mg/L) was used as artificial brown water which will be discharged from urine diversion toilet and fed into a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) type anaerobic reactor with inclined plate. The effluent of anaerobic reactor mixed with real household grey water (COD 700 mg/L) was further treated by MBR for reuse. An optimum condition maintained in anaerobic reactor was HRT of 8 hrs, pH 5.5, SRT of 5 days and temperature of $37^{\circ}C$. COD removal of 98% was achieved from the overall system. Total gas production rate and hydrogen content was 4.6 L/day and 52.4% respectively. COD mass balance described the COD distribution in the system via reactor byproducts and effluent COD concentration. The results of this study asserts that, anaerobic hydrogen fermentation combined with MBR is a potent system in stabilizing waste strength and clean hydrogen recovery which could be implemented for onsite domestic wastewater treatment and reuse.

Phenol and other phenolic compounds are common constituents of aqueous effluents from processes such as polymeric resin production, oil refining and cokeing plants. Phenol is a both toxic and lethal of fish at relatively low concentrations e.g. 5-25 mg/L and imparts objectionable tastes to drinking water at far lower concentration. Therefore, the treatment of phenol effluent is important. Among the various techniques of phenol wastewater treatment, microbial teratment is a popular process. The breakdown of phenols by microorganisms has recived considerable attention, because of its biochemical interest and its industrial importance in effluent treatment. This research was performed to investigate the dynamics of microbial community, biofilm growth and the comparison of phenol removal efficiency by RBC (Rotating Biological Contactor) using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT The experiment was carried out at rotating speed of 10ppm and hydraulic retention time of 7 hours. As time passed, phenol removal efficiency was gained highly. The RBC using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT completely degraded 15 mM.
The objectives of this research are to investigate the proper coagulation conditions which are a type and doses of coagulants, mixing conditions (velocity gradients and mixing times), pH and so on through Jar-test, to evaluate the flux variations, permeate, backwashing according to characteristics of pretreatment of the wastewater by means of MF membranes for river maintenance water reuse. The effluent water from B-city K-sewage treatment plant are used for this research. Turbidity and suspended solids(SS) are 14.2 NTU and 10.4 mg/L respectively. This condition causes fouling for membrane process. The flux decline could be reduced when coagulation pretreatment was carried out. Optimal coagulations PAC which are commonly used in the sewage treatment plant was observed in this research. The results indicate that an optimal coagulation dose and pH are 80 ppm and pH of 7 respectively, but coagulation efficiency was lower at strong acid or strong base. Results showed that continuous and steady operations in membrane separation process by means of the effective removal of organic matter and turbidity with coagulation pretreatment of sewage secondary effluent were achieved.

The response of environmental pollutants can be detected bioanalytically focusing on the source and matrices of concern. Cell culture bioassays are rapid and inexpensive, and thus have great potential for determination of environmental pollution. We have examined the estrogenic and dioxin-like activites of industrial wastewater using E-screen assay and EROD microbioassay. Influent and effluent wastewater were collected from four different industrial wastewater treatment plants, such as cosmetics, paints, textile producing and metal coating plant, and extracted using solid-phase extraction with Oasis@HLB plus cartridge. Pollutants adsorbed to the cartridge were eluted with MTBE. MCF-7 cells were treated with extracts showed various estrogenic potential. The textile wastewater showed strong estrogenic activity and the others showed weak estrogenic activity, No effect was observed in the wastewater from paints producing plant. All extracts showed CYPIA inducing effects, indicating these samples contain dioxin-like chemicals. Bioanalytical results of effluents compared with influents could give us information about the incomplete wastewater treatment and biological potency caused by pollutants. To quantitatively investigate the effects of manure compost on the soil and water environment including ground water the elution patterns of anions and hydraulic conductivity wore estimated with four different depth(15, 30, 45 60cm) and four variable ratio of compost treatment(0, 2, 4, 6%) through soil column test. 1. There were over 95% of elution of chloride and nitrate within 0.1 pore volume(PV), and sulfate within 0.2 PV. With 2 ton/10a of cow manure compost treatment recommended total 40 kg/10a of anions added was recovered as effluent at the amount of 17kg chloride, 5.4kg nitrate, and 13.2kg sulfate, respectively However, phosphate rarely recovered in the effluent due to the strong affinity for sorption sites in soils. 2. In multi-layered soil column the maximum peaks of each anion eluted were retardated with increasing soil depth and the amount of organic matter(OM) treatment. 3. With increasing OM up to 2% the saturated hydraulic conductivity(SHC) was greatly decreased, but the slight decrease in SHC was found by addition of OM greater than 4%. In multi-layered soil column SHC was more effected by the lower SHV layer than by that of the higher.

Wastewater reuse are exposed public health risk by pathogens. Therefore, this study was examined for microbial risk assessment after irrigation as treated wastewater in paddy rice plots. Five treatments were used: biofilter effluent, UV disinfected water, pond treatment, wetland treatment and conventional irrigation water. Risk assessment was calculated based on the beta-Poisson model by concentration of E. coli from 2003 to 2005. Monte-Carlo simulation (n=10,000) was used to estimate the risk characterization of uncertainty. The risk range was from $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-8}$ except biofilter effluent was $10^{-4}$ in June. The USEPA(1992) has recommended that risk of < $10^{-4}$ is acceptable level of safety for potable waters. In 2005, risk value was lower than 2003, 2004 because of the first irrigation for plowing water is lower E. coli concentration used tap water. It is shown that the first irrigation water quality was important for wastewater irrigation in paddy. UV disinfection and natural treatment used pond and wetland were thought to be an effective for wastewater reuse.
Developing two process models to simulate wastewater treatment process is needed to draw a comparison between measured BOD data and estimated process model data: a mathematical model based on the process mass-balance and an ANN (artificial neural network) model. Those two types of simulator can fit well in terms of effluent BOD data, which models are formulated based on the distinctive five parameters: influent flow rate, effluent flow rate, influent BOD concentration, biomass concentration, and returned sludge percentage. The structuralized mass-balance model and ANN modeI with seasonal periods can estimate data set more precisely, and changing optimization algorithm for the penalty could be a useful option to tune up the process behavior estimations. An complex model such as ANN model coupled with mass-balance equation will be required to simulate process dynamics more accurately.

Field experimnet of constructed wetland for rural wastewater treatment was performed from July 1998 to April 1999 including winter to examine the seasonal effect on the wetland performance. The system worked without freezing even under $-10^{\circ}C$ of air temperature as long as watewater was flowing. BOD removal rates varied in similar pattern as the air temperature, and winter performance was relatively lower than that in the growing season. However, removing performance during winter was still significant, and BOD removal rates were almost the the same as in the growing season. SS removal rate was relativelyless affected by temmperature, but lower decay rate during the winter can result in accumulation of the SS in the system, which releases constituents in the next spring and can affect whole system performance. The winter removal rates of nutrients like T-N and T-P were decreased about half compared to the growing season and low temperature. To maintain stabilized wetland performanced including winter time, supplying minimum heating for plants could be an alternative in field application. Experimental data was compared with NADB(North Americal Wetlands for Water Quality treatment database), and general performance of the system was within the reasonable range. The pollutant loading and effluent concentration of the experimented system were in high margin. Base on the experiment and databases, the required effluent water quality could be achieved if loading rate adjusted as ilulstrated in the database.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the operational characteristics of wastewater treatment using Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) with Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) separator in the pilot plant. Pilot plant experiments were conducted using SBR with AGS separator and pollution removal efficiencies were evaluated based on the operational condition and surface properties of AGS. The results of the operation on water quality of the effluent showed that the average concentration of total organic carbon, suspended solids, nitrogen, and phosphorus was 6.89 mg/L, 7.33 mg/L, 7.33 mg/L, and 0.2 mg/L, respectively. All these concentrations complied the effluent standard in Korea. The concentration of mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) fluctuated, but the AGS/MLSS ratio was constant at 86.5±1.3%. Although the AGS/MLSS ratio was constant, sludge volume index improved. These results suggested that the particle discharged fine sludge and increased the AGS praticle size in the AGS. Optical microscopy revealed the presence of dense AGS at the end of the operation, and particles of > 0.6 mm were found. Compared to those of belt-type AGS separator, the required area and power consumption of the hydrocyclone-type AGS separator were reduced by 27.5% and 83.8%, respectively.
