In recent years, hazardous flash flooding has caused deaths and damage to infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. In this paper, our aim is to assess patterns and trends in climate means and extremes affecting flash flood hazards and water resources in Saudi Arabia for the purpose to improve risk assessment for forecast capacity. We would like to examine temperature, precipitation climatology and trend magnitudes at surface stations in Saudi Arabia. Based on the assessment climate patterns maps and trends are accurately used to identify synoptic situations and tele-connections associated with flash flood risk. We also study local and regional changes in hydro-meteorological extremes over recent decades through new applications of statistical methods to weather station data and remote sensing based precipitation products; and develop remote sensing based high-resolution precipitation products that can aid to develop flash flood guidance system for the flood-prone areas. A dataset of extreme events has been developed using the multi-decadal station data, the statistical analysis has been performed to identify tele-connection indices, pressure and sea surface temperature patterns most predictive to heavy rainfall. It has been combined with time trends in extreme value occurrence to improve the potential for predicting and rapidly detecting storms. A methodology and algorithms has been developed for providing a well-calibrated precipitation product that can be used in the early warning systems for elevated risk of floods.

Soybean-urease induced carbonate precipitation (EICP), as an alternative to microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), was employed for soil improvement. Meanwhile, soluble calcium produced from industrial waste carbide slag powder (CSP) via the acid dissolution method was used for the EICP process. The ratio of CSP to the acetic acid solution was optimized to obtain a desirable calcium concentration with an appropriate pH. The calcium solution was then used for the sand columns test, and the engineering properties of the EICP-treated sand, including unconfined compressive strength, permeability, and calcium carbonate content, were evaluated. Results showed that the properties of the biocemented sand using the CSP derived calcium solution were comparable to those using the reagent grade CaCl2. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed that spherical vaterite crystals were mainly formed when the CSP-derived calcium solution was used. In contrast, spherical calcite crystals were primarily formed as the reagent grade CaCl2 was used. This study highlighted that it was effective and sustainable to use soluble calcium produced from CSP for the EICP process.
Streamflow is typically divided into two components that are direct runoff and baseflow, it is required to analyze and estimate behaviors of those two flow components to understand watershed characteristics so that watershed management plan can be effective in pollutant reductions. Since pollutant load behaviors in a stream or river are variable by flow component behaviors, best management practices need to be applied in a watershed based on the pollutant load behaviors varying with flow components. Thus, baseflow behaviors were analyzed separating baseflow from streamflow data collected from fifteen streamflow gaging stations in the 4 major river watersheds which are the Han river, Nakdong river, Guem river, and Yeongsan Somjin river watersheds. Moreover, precipitation trends throughout the 4 River Systems were investigated, thus daily precipitation data were collected from sixty-five locations. The Hank river watershed displayed the largest precipitation (925.2 mm) in summer but the lowest precipitation (71.8 mm) in winter, indicating the watershed has the most fluctuating precipitation characteristic. While the precipitation trends in the Four River Systems varied, a distinct feature in baseflow trends was not found, moreover baseflow percentages to streamflow were typically greater than 50% in the Four River Systems. As shown in this study, it would be expected significant amount of pollutants could be contributed to the stream in the form of baseflow at the watershed.

This paper gives the experimental results for the effective precipitation of particulated matter(PM) below 1[${\mu}m$] of diameter using the electrostatic precipitator, which is designed by ourselves. In order to improve the precipitation efficiency, the vertical and parallel magnetic field to the electric field is applied simultaneously by arranging ferrite magnets. When the parallel magnetic field is applied, the precipitation efficiency does not improve in comparison with non-magnets. However, when the vertical magnetic field is applied, it is improved about 5[%] more than the case of non-magnetized ferrite plate used. In addition, when the magnets are installed at the center of ground plate electrodes, the precipitation efficiency is ranged from 17 to 32[%] under the applied voltage of 5[kV]. It is similar to the case of the magnet arrangement at the front part of ground electrode. Also, the precipitation efficiency is more improved by arranging magnets as the inside part and zigzag on the electrodes. Especially, large particles of 0.7 and 1[${\mu}m$] is more easily captured by electrostatic precipitator. Consequently, it is convinced that the vertical magnetic field is more desirable than parallel magnetic field on the electric field for the effective treatment of particulated matter.

In this study, the removal of Cs and Tc from a simulated fission products (FP) solution which were co-dissolved with U during the oxidative-dissolution of spent fuel in a mixed carbonate solution of $(Na_2CO_3-NaHCO_3)-H_2O_2$ was investigated by using a selective precipitation method. As Cs and Tc might cause an unstable behavior due to the high decay heat emission of Cs as well as the fast migration of Tc when disposed of underground, it is one of the important issues to removal them in views of the increase of disposal safety. The precipitation of Cs and Re (as a surrogate for Tc) was examined by introducing sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTPB) and tetraphenylphosponium chloride (TPPCl), respectively. Precipitation of Cs by NaTPB and that of Re by TPPCl were completed within 5 minutes. Their precipitation rates were not influenced so much by the temperature and stirring speed even if they were increased by up to $50^{\circ}C$ and 1,000 rpm. However, the pH of the solution was found to have a great influence on the precipitation with NaTPB and TPPCl. Since Mo tends to co-precipitate with Re at a lower pH, especially, it was effective that a selective precipitation of Re by TPPCl was carried out at pH of above 9 without co-precipitation of Mo and Re. Over 99% of Cs was precipitated when the ratio of [NaTPB]/[Cs]>1 and more than 99% of Re, likewise, was precipitated when the ratio of [TPPCl]/[Re]>1.

North Korea is one of the high vulnerable countries facing the threat of natural disaster and has experienced more frequent disasters in recent years. These disasters have significantly led to food shortages and large reductions in crop yields. In 2015, both North Korean officials and international agencies had identified the extreme drought event, the worst in one hundred years according to the North Korean government. The objective of this study was an assessment of the extreme drought events in 2014~2015, and to apply climatic drought indices for drought monitoring in North Korea. Characteristics of the extreme drought in North Korea are examined by using the weekly-based Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The drought characteristics illustrated by the SPEI results are compared with a Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) results and drought impact information to understand how these indices can explain the drought conditions within the country. These results demonstrated that the SPEI could be an effective tool to provide improved spatial and temporal drought conditions to inform management decisions for drought policy.

In this study, we develop the very short-term precipitation forecasting model as well as classifier based on polynomial radial basis function neural networks by using AWS(Automatic Weather Station) and KLAPS(Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System) meteorological data. The polynomial-based radial basis function neural networks is designed to realize precipitation forecasting model as well as classifier. The structure of the proposed RBFNNs consists of three modules such as condition, conclusion, and inference phase. The input space of the condition phase is divided by using Fuzzy C-means(FCM) and the local area of the conclusion phase is represented as four types of polynomial functions. The coefficients of connection weights are estimated by weighted least square estimation(WLSE) for modeling as well as least square estimation(LSE) method for classifier. The final output of the inference phase is obtained through fuzzy inference method. The essential parameters of the proposed model and classifier such ad input variable, polynomial order type, the number of rules, and fuzzification coefficient are optimized by means of Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) and Differential Evolution(DE). The performance of the proposed precipitation forecasting system is evaluated by using KLAPS meteorological data.
A precipitation method, one of the most effective liquid phase reaction methods, was adopted in order to prepare high-tech Al2O3/ZrO2 composite ceramics. Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O were used as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent, various types of metal hydroxides were obtained by single precipitation(series A) and co-precipitation(series B) method at the pH condition between 7 and 11. Fine Al2O3-ZrO2 powders were prepared at optimum calcination condition and the effects of ZrO2 on microstructures and mechanical properties of Al2O3 were investigated. The composition of Al2O3/ZrO2 composites wax fixed as Al2O3-15 v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3). ZrO2 limited the grain growth of Al2O3 and increased grain size homogeneity of Al2O3 more effectively than MgO.Flexural strength values in Al2O3 and Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were 340-430 MPa and 540-820 MPa, respectively, and the effect of strength improvement showed 20-50% by adding ZrO2 to Al2O3. Fracture toughness of Al2O3/ZrO2 composites was improved by stress-induced phase transformation of tetragonal ZrO2 and toughening effect by microcrack was not observed. Also, ZrO2 particles located at Al2O3 grain junction contributed to toughening, while spherical ZrO2 particles located within Al2O3 grain did not contribute to toughening. Weibull moduli of Al2O3 ceramics and Al2O3/ZrO2 composites of series A and series B were 4.34, 5.17 and 9.06, respectively. Above 0.5 of failure probability, strength values in Al2O3 ceramics and Al2O3/ZrO3 composites of series A and series B were above 400 MPa, 700 MPa and 650 MPa, respectively.
A precipitation method, one of the most effective liquid phase reaction methods, was adopted in order to prepare high-tech Al2O3/ZrO2 composite ceramics, and the effects of stress-induced phase transformation of ZrO2 on thermal shock behavior of Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramics were investigated. Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O were used as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent. Metal hydroxides were obtained by single precipitation(process A) and co-precipitation(process B) method at the condition of pH=7, and the composition of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites was fixed as Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3). Critical temperature difference showing rapid strength degradation by thermal shock showed higher value in Al2O3/ZrO2 composites(process A : 20$0^{\circ}C$, process B : 215$^{\circ}C$) than in Al2O3(175$^{\circ}C$). The improvement of thermal shock property for Al2O3/ZrO2 composites was mainly due to the increase of strength at room temperature by adding ZrO2. The strength degradation was more severe for the sample with higher strength at room temperature. Crack initiation energies by thermal shock showed higher values in Al2O3/ZrO2 composites than in Al2O3 ceramics due to increase of fracture toughness by ZrO2.
Asymmetric poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes were prepared by varying the precipitation conditions of the phase inversion technique, and the influences of precipitation conditions on the water uptake of the membrane were investigate. The degree of water uptake of the membrane increased and reached a certain maximum value, as the precipitation time increased. However, it decreded after that. As the precipition temperauure became lower, the degree of water uptake increased more or less. The addition of a nonionic surfactant to the precipitaon solution was effective reducing the precipitation time by lowering the surface tension of the precipitation solution, but ig didn't change the maximum value of its own degree of water uptake. In addition, the relationship between the degree of water uptake and the separation characteristics and mechanical properies of the membrane were investigated. The selectivity factor of the membrane for pervaperation separation decreased, but the permeate flux increased, respectively, with increasing the degree of water uptake. The tensile strength and elongation of the membrane, respectively, increased to a maximum value with increasing the degree of water uptake, and then decreased abtuptly.
