Water quality data for 10 years (2000~2009) from about 826 reservoirs that are operated as a agricultural water quality survey network were analyzed in order to seek water quality management plan based on physical and chemical characteristics of agricultural reservoirs. The 95% reservoirs that exceed agricultural water quality standard of Chl-a (35mg/ $m^3$) had effective water depth shallower than 5m. The reason was that the reservoirs had more inflows of nutrient salts from the watershed, bigger surface water area of weak structure to algae occurrence. As the reservoirs of effective water depth shallower than 5m cover 49% of benefited area for irrigation, it is critical for agricultural water quality management of the reservoirs. The water quality of reservoir with shallower than 5m effective water depth was worse than reservoir with deeper than 5m effective water depth. Therefore, it is desirable that effective water depth of reservoirs make more than 5m for water quality management by building the bank higher and dredging the bottom of reservoirs.
The data of the agricultural water quality survey network was analyzed between from 1990 to 2010 in order to propose effective plans for water quality management by analyzing the characteristics of agricultural lakes and the change of water quality. The result of the analysis shows that there is a correlation between water quality and items that can be a function of water depth such as dam height, dam length, dam height/dam length ratio and active storage/surface area of lake ratio. This means that, Korean agricultural lakes, there is a correlation between water quality and water depth. Water quality of the lakes that have lower than 5m of active storage/surface area of lake ratio (effective water depth) especially tends to get worse rapidly. The Chl-a and COD concentration of Korean agricultural lakes have a tendency to increase between June and September. Therefore, we recommend first taking a water quality improvement project for the lakes preformed watershed management project, and taking a preventive short-term water quality improvement project for the unperformed lakes before June among lakes that have lower than 5m of effective water depth.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ponding depth treatment on water balance in paddy fields. Three ponding depth treatments, very shallow, shallow, and deep were used. The experimental plots were three 80m $\times$ 8m rectangular plots. Daily values of rainfall amount, ponding depth, irrigation water, drainage water, evapotranspiration, and infiltration were measured in the field. The ponding depth was continuously observed by water level logger during the growing season. The ET was measured by 1-m diameter PVC lysimeters. Irrigation water volume was measured by 75 mm pipe flowmeters and the drainage water volume by 75 mm pipe flowmeters and a recording Parshall flume. The results showed that irrigation water depths were 688.9 mm, 513.6 mm, and 624.4 mm in very shallow, shallow, and deep ponding, respectively. The effective rainfall amounts (effective ratio) were 243.7 mm(48.8%), 344.6 mm(68.9%), and 272.9 mm(54.6%) in very shallow, shallow, and deep ponding, respectively. The three treatments did not show any statistical difference in growth and yields. But the shallow depth treatment showed the largest yield.
The objective of this study is to develop water saving irrigation method using water balance model in order to save rural water. Daily water balance components such as irrigation water, drainage water, effective rainfall, ET, and infiltration were measured in paddy fields. Model simulations were performed for different outlet heights and ponding depths. The outlet heights and the ponding depths are 2 cm, 4 cm, 6 cm, 8 cm, and 10 cm, respectively. Based on the simulation very shallow ponding depth of 2 cm with 10 cm outlet height showed the largest effective rainfall ratio and the smallest irrigation amount. Until the introduction of laser leveling dozer and automatic inlet control devices, it would be desirable to adopt 4cm ponding depth because of difficulty of land leveling and frequency of farmer's field visit. The results of this study will be applied in the paddy farming and can improve water use efficiency.
Fallow paddy areas have been increased due to the import of cheap agricultural product, and the unbalance between farming cost and rice price since 1990. The increasing fallow paddy area needs to be protected from the devastation by weed breeding for the re-cultivation. In this study, two fallow paddy fields managed with different water depth were selected for monitoring and analysing of water quality, water balance and plant body change. The managed fallow paddy fields were more effective in water quality purification and plants growth control than non-managed fallow paddy fields. And the fallow paddy field managed with some degree of water depth was the most effective field in terms of weed control.
This study evaluated variations in the paddy rice water demand based on the continuous changing in rice transplanting period and ponding depth at the four study paddy fields, which represent typical rice producing regions in Korea. Total 7 scenarios on rice transplanting periods were applied while minimum ponding depth of 0 and 20 mm were applied in accordance with maximum ponding depth ranging from 40 mm to 100 mm with 20 mm interval. The weather data from 2013 to 2019 was also considered. The results indicated that the highest rice water demand occurred at high temperature and low rainfall region. Increased rice transplanting periods showed higher rice water demand. The rice water demand for 51 transplanting days closely matched with the actual irrigation water supply. In case of ponding depth, the results showed that the minimum ponding depth had a proportional relationship with rice water demand, while maximum ponding depth showed the contrary results. Minimum ponding depth had a greater impact on rice water demand than the maximum ponding depth. Therefore, these results suggest that increasing the rice transplanting period, which reflects the current practice is desirable for a reliable estimation of rice water demand.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of water depth and speed on the activation of lower muscles during squat exercises, utilizing electromyography(EMG). It involved ten male participants in there. Participants performed 30 squats over a minute at a speed of 60bpm and maximum speed squats until exhaustion within a minute. The Integrated electromyography(iEMG) readings for the rectus femoris showed statistically significant differences due to water depth and speed, with a significant interaction effect between depth and speed during squat exercises. The iEMG readings for the biceps femoris also showed statistically significant differences, with a significant interaction effect between depth and speed during squat exercises. The iEMG readings for the gastrocnemius showed statistically significant differences according to water depth and speed. However, the interaction effect of water depth and speed during squat exercises did not show a statistically significant difference. In contrast, the iEMG readings for the tibialis anterior demonstrated statistically significant differences, with a statistically significant interaction effect during squats. These findings suggest that water depth and speed positively influence the activation patterns of lower muscles. Therefore, appropriately tailored aquatic exercises based on water depth for individuals with musculoskeletal discomfort, including the elderly or those with physical impairments, can effectively reduce physical strain and enhance balance, as well as physical and perceptual aspects. It is concluded that such exercises could provide a safer and more effective method of exercise compared to ground-based alternatives.
A number of fallow paddies field continues to increase because of adverse agricultural circumstance such as upsurge income of foreign products, increase of labor costs in local community, imbalance between productivity and profitability etc. Such fallow paddies are necessary to be protected against weeds and trees. If fallow paddies are not managed, it will be devastated and needed cost for re-cultivation. Therefore, management of gradually increased fallow paddy fields should be conducted. In this study, the effect of plants growth inhibition and water quality purification through the control of flood in fallow paddy were examined in an experimental field. The managed and unmanaged fallow paddies through the control of water depth were constructed in the experimental field. The monitoring was conducted from 2005 to 2007. As the result, the managed fallow paddies were more effective than the unmanaged ones on the growth inhibition and water purification. In addition, when the fallow paddy is managed with regular water depth, it was the most effective in the plants growth inhibition.
In this study, a runoff hydrograph and runoff volume were calculated by using the kinetic wave theory for small urban watersheds based on the concept of low impact development(LID), and the effective imperviousness was estimated based on these calculations. The degree of sensitivity of the effective imperviousness of small watersheds to the impervious to pervious area ratio, infiltration capability, watershed slope, roughness coefficient and surface storage depth was then analyzed. From this analysis, the following conclusions were obtained: The effective imperviousness and paved area reduction factor decreased as the infiltration capability of pervious area increased. As the slope of watersheds becomes sharper, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor display an increasing trend. As the roughness coefficient of impervious areas increases, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor tend to increase. As the storage depth increases, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor show an upward trend, but the increase is minimal. Under the conditions of this study, it was found that the effective imperviousness is most sensitive to watershed slope, followed by infiltration capability and roughness coefficient, which affect the sensitivity of the effective imperviousness at a similar level, and the storage depth was found to have little influence on the effective imperviousness.
The purpose of this study was to investigate tile effects of pending depth treatment on water balance in paddy fields. Field experiment was performed in an experimental farm in Taegu, southern part of Korea during the rice growing season In 2001, 2002 and 2003. Experimental plots were three 8m ${\times}$ 80m rectangular plots. Three pending depth treatments, very shallow, shallow, and deep were used. Daily values of water balance components were measured in the field. The irrigation amounts measured at the experimental plots showed that the very shallow and the shallow ponded plots required smaller amount than the deep ponded plot. The shallow ponded plot saved irrigation water about 17.7% compared with the traditional deep ponded plot in 2001 The very shallow ponded plot saved irrigation water about 25.7% compared with the traditional deep ponded Plot in 2002, The shallow ponded plot saved irrigation water about 18% compared with the deep ponded plot in 2003.
