  • The characteristics of fatigue crack growth subject to out-of-plane bending fatigue are studied in terms of crack opening behavior by using pre-cracked smooth specimens. Crack opening stress is measured by an elastic compliance method which may precisely and continuously provide many date using strain gages during experiment. The results of the short crack and the long crack arranged by crack closure concept show that the effective stress gange ratio of short crack is grester than that of long crack, and ano- malous growth behavior of short crack may be elucidated by the variation of crack opening stress. When the variation of fatigue crack growth rate is arranged versus effective stress intensity factor range. Iinear relation is held also for the short crack. It shows that growth behavior of short crack can be quantitatively represent- ed by the fracture mechanics parameter using effective stress intensity factor range.

  • To establish the evaluation of the fatigue crack growth behavior in 5083-O aluminum alloy, constant load-amplitude fatigue crack growth tests were carried out under the small scale yielding conditions. Crack length and closure of this material were measured by the compliance method using a clip-on gage. The main results obtained as follows: The fatigue crack growth rate against stress intensity factor range .DELTA.K exhibits the trilinear form with two transitions at the growth rate 5.5*10$^{-6}$ and 5.5*10$^{-5}$ mm/cycle, in the so-caled Region II. The trilinear form appears still in the plot of growth rate versus effective stress intensity factor range .DELTA. $K_{eff}$. Stress ratio R affects the relationship of crack growth rates versus .DELTA.K but does not affect the reation of crack growth rate versus .DELTA. $K_{eff}$. The experimental results indicate that the effective stress intensity range ratio U depends on the maximum stress intensity factor $K_{max}$, but not on the stress ratio R.o R.R.

  • The fatigue crack growth behavior in GTA butt welded joints of Al-Alloy 5052-H38 was examined using Single Edge Notched(SEN) specimens. It is well known that welding residual stress has marked influence on fatigue crack growth rate in welded structure. In the general area of fatigue crack growth in the presence of residual stress, it is noted that the correction of stress intensity factor (K) to account for residual stress is important for the determination of both stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.K) and stress ratio(R) during a loading cycle. The crack growth rate(da/dN) in welded joints were correlated with the effective stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.Keff) which was estimated by superposition of the respective stress intensity factors for the residual stress field and for the applied stress. However, redistribution of residual stress occurs during crack growth and its effect is not negligible. In this study, fatigue crack growth characteristics of the welded joints were examined by using superposition of redistributed residual stress and discussed in comparison with the results of the initial welding residual stress superposition.

  • Fatigue surface crack growth was studied in 7075-T651 aluminum alloy plates subjected largely to bending loads. The surface crack length and its depth were measurement by the unloading elastic compliance method. The surface crack growth rate dc/dN, on the surface and da/dN, in the depth direction were obtained by the secant method. The stress intensity factor range .DELTA.K was computed by means of Newman and Raju equation. The aspect ratio a/c was presented in form of a/c=0.815-0.853(a/T). The effect of the stress ratio on the stable surface crack growth rates under increasing .DELTA.T is larger in lower .DELTA.K, while the relation between dc/dN, da/dN and the effective stress intensity factor range .DELTA.K$_{eff}$ is weakly dependent on the stress ratio.o.

  • The effect of different anisotropy and stress ratio on fatigue crack propagation behavior was investigated under various stress ratio(R=-0.4, -0.2, 0.2, 0.2, 0.4) using pure titanium sheet used in aerospace, chemical and food industry. The rack closure behavior under constant load amplitude fatigue crack propagation test was examined. Fatigue crack propagation rate da/dN was estimated in terms of effective stress intensity factor range, $\Delta$K$_{eff}$, regardless of various stress ratio but was influenced by anisotropy. Also, it was found that the effect of anisotropy was considerably decreased but still not negligible when he da/dN was evaluated by a conventional parameter, $\Delta$$K_{eff}$/E and when the modified da/dN.$\sqrt{\varepsilon}_f$ was evaluated by $\Delta$$K_{eff}$/E. On the other hand, da/dN could be evaluated uniquely by effective new parameter, $\Delta$K$_{eff}$/$sigma_{ys}$, regardless of anisotropy, as int he following equation da/dN=C''[\frac{{\Delta}K_{eff}}{{\sigma}_{ys}}]^{n''}. And effective stress intensity factor range ratio, U was estimated by the following equation with respect to the ratio of reversed plastic zone size, $\Delta r_{p}$ to monotonic plastic zone size, $r_p$ regardless of stress ratio and anisotropy. U=-4.45$(\Delta r_{p}/r_{p})^{2}$+4.1$(\Delta r_{p}/r_{p})$+0.245_{p})$+0.245

  • Kikukawa-Compliance method using a conventional clip-on gauge was employed to investigate fatigue crack growth and crack closure in 2017-T3 aluminum alloy. The crack growth rate plot against stress intensity range .DELTA.K on a log-log diagram exhibits a bilinear form with a transition at the growth rate of 10$\^$-4/ mm/cycle. The bilinear form appears still in the plot of growth rate versus effective stress intensity range .DELTA.K$\_$eff/. Fatigue crack growth rate could be well represented by .DELTA.K$\_$eff. The experimental results indicate that the effective stress intensity range ratio U depends on the maximum stress intensity factor K$\_$max/, but the stress ratio R does not affect U. The crack opening stress intensity factor K$\_$op/ tends to increase with increasing K$\_$max/ and decrease with increasing .DELTA.K.

  • In order to investigate the effect of single tensile overload on the short crack growth behavior under the out-of-plane cyclic bending moment, crack opening stresses were continuously measured by an elastic compliance method using strain gages. The characteristics of short crack growth after the single tensile overload are analyzed by the effective stress range ratio. Futhermore, the investigation was carried out with respect to various fatigue crack growth behaviors such as the plastic zone size effect on crack retardation, the retarded crack length and the number of cycles.

  • The propagation and closure behavior of surface crack initiated at a sharply notched specimens were investigated in 5083-H113 aluminium alloy under constant amplitude of tension load by the unloading elastic compliance method. The crack shape (aspect ratio) was found to be approximately semicircular during the crack was being small and to be changed to semi-elliptical during it was being long. The propagation rate of a surface crack initiated from notch root decelerated with increasing crack length when the crack was small and then accelerated when it was large. The effect of stress ratio was large in lower .DELTA.K range, but the effective stress intensity factor range .DELTA.K$_{eff}$ was found to diminish the difference of the crack propagation rate. By considering the increase in crack closure stress with crack length and examining the microphotographs, plasticity-induced and roughness-induced crack closure mechanisms were predominant in the range of this study.y.

  • This paper aims to analyze fatigue fracture mechnisms with high strength aluminum alloys, which are widely used in vehicles or airplanes to prevent accidents. Usefulness of the crack opening point was proposed by using an effective stress intensity facor when evaluating the fatigue crack propagaion rate. Therefore an exact crack opening ratio can be measured for a more exact fatigue crack propagation rate. It is found that the fatigue crack propagation rate was valid within the range of experimentation as an effective stress intensity factor. Summarizing the results are as follows in this paper ; (1) It is found that the value of the crack opening ratio is constant at the rear of the specimen, U'=0.25 at the crack mouth and U'=0.45 at the crack tip, respectively regardless of the stress ratio. (2) The crack opening ratio is different according to measurement locations. The crack opening ratio value was measured at the crack mouth by a clip gage or measured behind the specimen by a strain gage. It is found that the crack opening ratio value is more accurate that any other measuring test for evaluating the crack propagation ratio test by effective stress intensity factor.
