This paper presents the characteristics of transient and effective impulse impedances for deeply driven grounding electrodes used in soil with high resistivity or in downtown areas. The laboratory test associated with the time domain performance of grounding piles subjected to a lightning stroke current has been carried out using an actual-sized model grounding system. The ground impedances of the deeply driven ground rods and grounding pile under impulse currents showed inductive characteristics, and the effective impulse ground impedance owing to the inductive component is higher than the power frequency ground impedance. Both power frequency ground impedance and effective impulse ground impedance decrease upon increasing the length of the model grounding electrodes. Furthermore, the effective impulse ground impedances of the deeply driven grounding electrodes are significantly amplified in impulse currents with a rapid rise time. The reduction of the power frequency ground impedance is decisive to improve the impulse impedance characteristics of grounding systems.

In this paper, Analytical study is carried out on the impedance characteristics of the globe control valve, which is mainly used for thrust control in liquid rockets, according to the effective area at low frequency perturbation. The impedance tends to increase according to effective area and the cause of impedance characteristic change through flow field visualization is investigated. In the future, the information on the change in the impedance characteristics of the control valve can be used to obtain the impedance of the supply system and it can be utilized to predict pogo phenomenon as well as design accumulator and orifice to reduce the pogo phenomenon.

This paper presents an analysis method of transient ground impedance using the lightning impulse and variable frequency currents. The transient ground impedance strongly depends on the configuration and size of grounding electrodes and the shapes of impulse currents, and the inductance of grounding electrodes has a significant affect on the transient impedance of the grounding system. There are some differences between the effective impulse ground impedance which was introduced some papers and the transient ground impedance. The transient ground impedance measured from the peak value of impulse voltage and the peak value of impulse current is more reliable than the effective impulse ground impedance.

The transient ground impedance depending on configuration, size, and material of grounding electrodes as well as the shapes of impulse currents, has a significant affect on the performance of the grounding system. This paper presents experimental results in regard to the analysis method of transient ground impedance using the lightning impulse and variable frequency currents. Also a new estimation method to replace the effective surge impedance for transient ground impedance was proposed. The ground electrodes used in this experiment are virtual ground electrodes including both resistance and inductance components, carbon ground electrode with 1[m] length, copper electrode with 9[m] length and counterpoise with 40[m] length. Ground impedances using the proposed method were measured respectively. Comparing with the ground impedance using variable frequency current the conventional ground impedance($Z_1$) calculated from the peak values of impulse voltage and impulse current is observed more correct method for evaluating the performance of ground electrode than the effective surge impedance.

This paper presents an impedance-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technique considering temperature effects. The temperature variation results in a significant impedance variation, particularly both horizontal and vertical shifts in the frequency domain, which may lead to erroneous diagnostic results of real structures. A new damage detection strategy has been proposed based on the correlation coefficient (CC) between the reference impedance data and a concurrent impedance data with an effective frequency shift which is defined as the shift causing the maximum correlation. The proposed technique was applied to a lab-sized steel truss bridge member under the temperature varying environment. From an experimental study, it has been demonstrated that a narrow cut inflicted artificially to the steel structure was successfully detected using the proposed SHM strategy.
Among nondestructive damage detection methods, impedance-based methods have been recognized as an effective technique for damage identification in many kinds of structures. This paper proposes a method to detect cracks in metal structures by combining electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) responses and artificial neural networks (ANN). Firstly, the theories of EMI responses and impedance-based damage detection methods are described. Secondly, the reliability of numerical simulations for impedance responses is demonstrated by comparing to pre-published results for an aluminum beam. Thirdly, the proposed method is used to detect cracks in the beam. The RMSD (root mean square deviation) index is used to alarm the occurrence of the cracks, and the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) ANN is employed to identify the location and size of the cracks. The selection of the effective frequency range is also investigated. The analysis results reveal that the proposed method accurately detects the cracks' occurrence, location, and size in metal structures.

This paper describes a new method for extracting characteristic impedance of transmission line using Substrate Integrated Artificial Dielectric (SIAD). The new procedure to calculate the characteristic impedance of SIAD transmission line is described with the proper equations and basic transmission line theory. The characteristic impedance is determined as an almost fixed value in the proposed method, while it fluctuates according to frequency in the previous method. As the result, the effective dielectric constant of SIAD transmission line is calculated as a fixed value rather than fluctuating one. In order to show the validity of the proposed method, SIAD microstrip lines are simulated and measured, and characteristic impedances and effective dielectric constant are calculated and compared to the previous method.

The coaxial line impedance transformer that performs impedance conversion using the coupling of two or more coaxial lines of the same length is often used for impedance matching in the low frequency region due to many advantages. This paper measures the phase and magnitude characteristics of each coaxial line in a 4:1 coaxial line impedance transformer using two 100mm coaxial lines. This experiment shows that it is more effective to make the length of the auxiliary coaxial line shorter than the main coaxial line by about 5 mm in order to realize a low loss impedance transformer. In addition, it measures the transmission characteristics by directly connecting a 4:1 impedance transformer and a 1:4 impedance transformer. This experiment shows that it is effective to connect a 1pF capacitor between the ground and the outer conductor input point of the main coaxial line in order to increase the operating frequency range.

This paper presents the transient behaviors of grounding system impedance against lightning impulse currents. The dynamic characteristics of the deeply driven ground rod and grounding grid subjected to the impulse current were investigated. The transient ground impedance strongly depends on the configuration and size of grounding electrodes and the shapes of impulse currents, and the inductance of grounding electrodes has a significant affect on the transient ground impedance of grounding system Also, the deeply-driven ground rod was effective to reduce the transient ground impedance in time domain of miceroseconds.

The transient characteristics of grounding systems play a major role in the protection of power equipments, electronic circuits and info-communication facilities against surges which arise from lightning or ground faults. Electronic devices are very weak against lightning surges injected from grounding systems and can be damaged. The malfunction and damage of electronic circuits bring about bad operation performances, a lot of economical losses, and etc. Therefore, in order to obtain the effective protection measure of electronic devices from overvoltages and lightning surges, the analysis of the transient grounding impedances in essential. One of this work is to examine the transient behaviors of grounding impedances under steplike currents for various grounding systems. And the other of this work is to evaluate the transient behaviors of a grid with rods under impulse currents and to investigate the effect of grounding lead wire. Transient grounding impedances of a grid with rods under impulse current waves have been measured as a parameter of the length of the grounding leads. Z-t, Z-i and V-i curves of transient grounding impedance under impulse current waveforms have been measured and analyzed. It was found that the grounding impedance gives the inductive, resistive and capacitive aspects under steplike current. Transient grounding impedance characteristics were very different with shapes, geometries of ground electrodes. Also, they were dependent on the waveform and magnitude of impulse current.
