The propagation and closure behavior of surface crack initiated at a sharply notched specimens were investigated in 5083-H113 aluminium alloy under constant amplitude of tension load by the unloading elastic compliance method. The crack shape (aspect ratio) was found to be approximately semicircular during the crack was being small and to be changed to semi-elliptical during it was being long. The propagation rate of a surface crack initiated from notch root decelerated with increasing crack length when the crack was small and then accelerated when it was large. The effect of stress ratio was large in lower .DELTA.K range, but the effective stress intensity factor range .DELTA.K$_{eff}$ was found to diminish the difference of the crack propagation rate. By considering the increase in crack closure stress with crack length and examining the microphotographs, plasticity-induced and roughness-induced crack closure mechanisms were predominant in the range of this study.y.
In this paper, the existing formulas of the step-by-step method were generalized for effective estimation of responses of complicated composite sections due to long-term deformation of concrete. The initial transformed section properties of the composite section were derived from material and section properties of concrete section and sections which confine the longterm deformation of concrete. The transformed section properties at each step were derived from the effective modulus of elasticity considered the creep coefficient variation. Improved formulas of the step-by-step method for generalized responses were derived by introducing 5 generalized parameters. The formulas can be more simplified by applying constant increment of creep coefficient at each step. The constant increment of creep coefficient at each step can also reduce computing time and make equal computing error of each step. The generalized responses for axial elastic strain of concrete section were most sensitive to the area rate of concrete section, and the ratio of the second moment of the confining section area was more sensitive than that of the concrete section. Those for elastic curvature of concrete section were most sensitive to the ratio of the second moment of concrete section area.

The nonlinearity and high deformability of rubber make accurate analysis of the behavior of cord-rubber composites a challenging task. Some researchers have adopted the third phase between cord and rubber and have carried out three-phase modeling. However, it is difficult to determine the thickness and properties of the interface in cord-rubber composites. In this study, a two-dimensional finite-element method (2D FEM) is used to investigate the effective and normalized moduli of cord-rubber composites having interfaces of various thicknesses; this model takes into account the 2D generalized plane strain and a plane strain element. The neo-Hookean model is used for the properties of rubber, several interface properties are assumed and three loading directions are selected. It is found that the properties and thickness of the interface can affect the nonlinearity and the effective modulus of cord-rubber composites.

Self-Boring Pressuremeter Test(SBPT) is known to be the most effective in-situ test method which can reliably determine consolidation characteristics as well as deformation modules and untrained shear strength. In order to derive the coefficient of consolidation using SBPT results it is necessary to obtain the dissipation behavior from the pore pressure change with time during constant radial strain(generally 10%) and to derive the reliable time factor(Τ) from the analytical method which considers the real in-situ conditions. As previous studies on time factor are based on the assumptions of plane strain condition that the membrane of SBP is infinite, of untrained condition during the expansion of the probe and of elastic soil behavior during consolidation, these analyses can't consider the real boundary conditions and the real soil behaviour. In this study, consolidation analysis similar to real in-situ conditions including test procedure is conducted using finite element program which employs MCC model and Biot theory. Time factor considering the effects of finite membrane length, the total pressure change during consolidation and partial drainage is proposed and compared with previous results.

In the present study, a numerical and experimental investigation has been carried out on the seismic behavior of RC columns of a bridge which damaged under corrosive environments and retrofitted by various techniques including combined application of CFRP sheets and steel profiles. A novel hybrid retrofitting procedure, including the application of inner steel profiles and outer peripheral CFRP sheets, has been proposed for strengthening purpose. Seven large-scale RC columns of a Girder Bridge have been tested in the laboratory under the influence of simultaneous application of constant axial load and the lateral cyclic displacements. Having verified the finite element modeling, using ABAQUS software, the effects of important parameters such as the corrosion percentage of steel rebars and the number of CFRP layers have been evaluated. Based on the results, retrofitting of RC columns of the bridge with the proposed technique was effective in improving some measures of structural performance such as lateral strength degradation and higher energy absorption capability. However, the displacement ductility was not considerably improved whereas the elastic stiffness of the specimens has been increased.

The objective of this study was to present a damped pneumatic suspension, a bike fork suspension, which can adapt itself to incoming road excitations is presented in this paper. It consists of a hydraulic damper and a pneumatic spring in parallel with a linear spring. The study also proposed a variable and switchable orifice, in the hydraulic damper, to select appropriate damping property. Hydraulic-pneumatic circuit model for the bike fork suspension was established based on AMESim, in order to predict its performance. In addition, elastic-damping characteristics of the fork such as spring constant and viscous damping coefficient were computed and compared, for validation, with those evaluated by experiment using the universal test machine. Through simulation analysis and test, it was established that the hydraulic-pneumatic circuit model is effective and practical for development of future MTB suspensions.
Elastomer-filler interaction in terms of characterization of filler effects was studied using natural rubber(NR) loaded with kaolin fillers modified with sodium polyphosphate and poly(maleic anhydride), respectively. Kaolins modified with sodium polyphosphate or poly(maleic anhydride) show adhering characteristics by Kraus plot. Reinforcement activity according to Cunneen-Russell method is given by those fillers, in which sodium polyphosphate-treated kaolin presents more favorable results than that treated with poly(maleic anhydride) with respect to adhesion constant, reinforcement extent, elastic constant, and crosslink density. When applied to Blanchard's linkage reinforcement theory, NR vulcanizates loaded with kaolin modified with sodium polyphosphate meet the requirements for both approximate linkage reinforcement(${\psi}'$) of 1.02 to 4.94 and accurate linkage reinforcement($\psi$) of 1.00 to 1.18, representing the values of effective wetting($C_{\psi}$) for 0.001 to 0.029 and intrinsic linkage reinforcement(${\psi}_0$) for 1.015 to 1.124, respectively, whille negligible linkage reinforcement is shown by NR vulcanizates loaded with kaolin treated with poly(maleic anhydride). Dynamic storage modulus(G') given by surface modified kaolins presents more favorable crosslink density rates of $2.260{\times}10^{-5}\;mole/cm^3-min$. for sodium polyphosphate treated kaolin and $1.305{\times}10^{-5}\;mole/cm^3-min$. for poly(maleic anhydride) treated kaolin, respectively, compared to untreated kaolin showing the rate of $1.033{\times}10^{-5}\;mole/cm^3-min$.
Elastic constants were measured for 70 samples of transversely isotropic banded gneiss from the Onyang region. Anisotropic angles of samples are $0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$. Exact values of $E_2$ and ${\nu}_{21}$ can be measured from samples with anisotropic angles of $0^{\circ}$ and those of $E_1$ and ${\nu}_{12}$ from samples with anisotropic angles of $90^{\circ}$. These values are set as reference values. Elastic constants measured from samples with anisotropic angles of $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, and $75^{\circ}$, using the methods proposed by Jang et al. (2001) and Park et al. (2008), are compared with the reference values to examine the effectiveness of the two methods. $E_1$ were measured correctly from samples with anisotropic angles of $60^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$, and $E_2$ from samples with anisotropic angles of $15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, when using the method suggested by Jang et al. (2001). $E_1$ were measured correctly from samples with anisotropic angles of $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$, and $E_2$ from samples with anisotropic angles of $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$, when using the method proposed by Park et al. (2008). The effectiveness of the two methods was determined by error rates between exact values and measured values. The effectiveness of the two methods was similar. However, the method suggested by Jang et al. (2001) may be more effective in measuring $E_1$, while the method suggested by Park et al. (2008) may be more effective in measuring $E_2$.

In this study, the propagation behaviour and the closure phenomena of physically small surface cracks were investigated by the techinque of the Kikukawa-unloading elastic compliance method using a back face strain gage. The surface cracks initiated and propagated from notched specimens under constant amplitude bending load. The crack shape (aspect ratio) with approximately semi-circular at the early stage was changed to semi-elliptical as the cracks grew larger. The crack depth (a) could be expressed uniquenly by the crack length (c). The dependence of the crack propagation rate on the stress ratio R was strongly related in the lower ${\Delta}K$ range. The deceleration of the surface crack propagation rate was prominent in lower R during the crack length was small. When the propagation rate was rearranged with the effective stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}$K_{eff} the dependence of the crack propagation rate on the stress ratio R was found to be diminshed. These were caused by the crack closure phenomena that was most prominent at the lower propagation rate. The mechanism of crack closure phenomena was dominated by the plasticity-induced mechanism.
Interface recombination velocity in $Al_{x}$G $a_{1-x}$ As-GaAs and $Al_{0.85}$, G $a_{0.15}$ As-GaA $s_{1-y}$S $b_{y}$ heterojunction systems is studied as a function of lattice mismatch. The results are applied to the design of highly efficient III-V heterojunction solar cells. A horizontal liquid-phase epitaxial growth system was used to prepare p-p-p and p-p-n $Al_{x}$G $a_{1-x}$ As-GaA $s_{1-y}$S $b_{y}$-A $l_{x}$G $a_{1-x}$ As double heterojunction test samples with specified values of x and y. Samples were grown at each composition, with different GaAs and GaAs Sb layer thicknesses. A method was developed to obtain the lattice mismatch and lattice constants in mixed single crystals grown on (100) and (111)B oriented GaAs substrates. In the AlGaAs system, elastic lattice deformation with effective Poisson ratios .mu.$_{eff}$ (100=0.312 and .mu.$_{eff}$ (111B) =0.190 was observed. The lattice constant $a_{0}$ (A $l_{x}$G $a_{1-x}$ As)=5.6532+0.0084x.angs. was obtained at 300K which is in good Agreement with Vegard's law. In the GaAsSb system, although elastic lattice deformation was observed in (111) B-oriented crystals, misfit dislocations reduced the Poisson ratio to zero in (100)-oriented samples. When $a_{0}$ (GaSb)=6.0959 .angs. was assumed at 300K, both (100) and (111)B oriented GaAsSb layers deviated only slightly from Vegard's law. Both (100) and (111)B zero-mismatch $Al_{0.85}$ G $a_{0.15}$As-GaA $s_{1-y}$S $b_{y}$ layers were grown from melts with a weight ratio of $W_{sb}$ / $W_{Ga}$ =0.13 and a growth temperature of 840 to 820 .deg.C. The corresponding Sb compositions were y=0.015 and 0.024 on (100) and (111)B orientations, respectively. This occurs because of a fortuitous in the Sb distribution coefficient with orientation. Interface recombination velocity was estimated from the dependence of the effective minority carrier lifetime on double-heterojunction spacing, using either optical phase-shift or electroluminescence timedecay techniques. The recombination velocity at a (100) interface was reduced from (2 to 3)*10$^{4}$ for y=0 to (6 to 7)*10$^{3}$ cm/sec for lattice-matched $Al_{0.85}$G $a_{0.15}$As-GaA $s_{0.985}$S $b_{0.015}$ Although this reduction is slightly less than that expected from the exponential relationship between interface recombination velocity and lattice mismatch as found in the AlGaAs-GaAs system, solar cells constructed from such a combination of materials should have an excellent spectral response to photons with energies over the full range from 1.4 to 2.6 eV. Similar measurements on a (111) B oriented lattice-matched heterojunction produced some-what larger interface recombination velocities.ities.ities.s.
