To consider potentially new sources which have hypoglycemic effect and accelerating alcohol detoxification, this study was designed to investigate the effect of Crataegus fructus and Morns alba L. in alcohol-treated rats. I compared the body weight, glucose, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) of rats administered both alcohol and extract of experimental plants to rats treated with alcohol alone. Administration of extracts of C. fructus and M alba, respectively, resulted in a significant reduction in the blood glucose level and the activities of ADH of liver compared to the control rats, and administration of extract of M. alba showed significantly lower on bodyweight gain in the rats than in other treated rats. In contrast, the activities of ALDH of liver were increased. The activities of AST and ALT between the only alcohol-treated rats and the alcohol and experimental plants-treated rats were no significant difference. The results suggest that C. fructus and M alba have a hypoglycemic effect, and reduce liver damage by accelerating acetaldehyde metabolism in alcoholic rats, so the combined effect of C. fructus and M alba may be considered as an alternative remedy for hangovers, alcohol-induced overweight and alcohol-induced diabetes.
Alcohol has extensive effects on sleep and daytime sleepiness. Alcohol has a sleep inducing effect and the effect of increased non-REM sleep and suppressed REM sleep during the first half portion of night sleep, but alcohol induces the effect of decreased non-REM sleep and increased light sleep and frequent awakenings and REM rebound during the second half portion of night sleep. Alcohol provokes chronobiological change such as the changes of amplitude or the phase shifts of hormones or core body temperature. The sleep disruption resulting from alcohol drinking may lead to daytime fatigue and sleepiness. The elderly are at particular in the increased risk of alcohol-related sleep disorders because they achieve higher levels of alcohol in the blood and brain than do younger adults after consuming an equivalent dose. Bedtime alcohol consumption among older adults may lead to unsteadiness if walking is attempted during the night, with increased risk of falls and injuries. Continued alcohol use for sleep induction often induces aggravation of insomnia, alcoholism or sleep related breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea. Alcohol should not be used as substitution of sleep pill because of the dependence and tolerance for sleep inducing effect, and the sleep disruption produced by alcohol withdrawal.
Purpose: We tested the inhibitory effect of six purchasable alcohol hand rubs against Staphylococcus aureus. Methods: Five alcohol hand rubs were collected with random manner on the market and 1 alcohol hand rubs which is currently used in a hospital was included. we designed the experimental scheme on the basis of M7-A6 method of NCCLS. Each hand rubs were diluted to 1:1, 1:10, 1:100, 1:1,000 with tryptic soy broth. S. aureus was cultured. Turbidity and the colony counting was measured. Results: With dilution rate of 1:1, all products showed more than 95% of the inhibitory effect on bacterial growth. At 1:10 dilution, product $N^{\circ}1$, 2, 3, 4, and 5 displayed the inhibitory effect of 97.77%, 92.38%, 78.19%, 97.42%, and 96.6%, respectively. But, the inhibitory effect of product $N^{\circ}6$ has been disappeared at that dilution. Over 1:100 dilution, all products lost their inhibitory effect except product $N^{\circ}5$. Product $N^{\circ}5$ displayed more than 96% of inhibitory effect at all dilution rate, even at 1:100 and 1:1,000. Conclusion: We identified that inhibitory effect on bacterial growth of alcohol hand rubs was variable. We suggest that concentration of alcohol should be checked before choosing alcohol hand rubs. Further evaluation of in vivo study is needed.
This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of the levels of dietary Zn and alcohol consumption on lipid metabolism in Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 80 to 90g for eight weeks. Ninety rats were divided into nine groups according to Zn levels and alcohol consumption such as no alcohol group[low Zn diet group(<1ppm. LZ) control Zn diet group(30ppm. CZ) high Zn diet group(60ppm, HZ)] 10% alcohol consumption group[the same Zn levels as no alcohol group LZLA, CZLA, HZLA] 20% alcohol consumption group[the same Zn levels as no alcohol group, LZHA, CZHA, HZHA] The results obtained were summarized as following : 1) In the serum total cholesterol increased with increasing dietary Zn levels but decreased with alcohol consumption. HDL-cholesterol decreased with alcohol consumption. Triglyce-ride in alcohol group was higher than no alcohol group. In alcohol group triglyceride increased with decreasing dietary Zn levels. 2) In the liver total lipid in alcohol group was higher than no alcohol group HA group showed a significant increase. Triglyceride increased with alcohol consumption. 3) In the serum and liver Zn content increased with increasing dietary Zn levels but decreased with alcohol consumption.
We investigated the effects of bean sprouts (Glycine max), dropwort (Oenanthe javanica), and radish (Raphanus sativus var. hortensis for. acanthiformis) extracts on alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). The extracts from three kinds of vegetables were prepared by extracting with boiling water, distilling water, and ethyl alcohol. Among extracts, boiling water extract showed the highest activating effect on ADH, respectively and distilled water extract had a greater effect on ADH activation than that of alcohol extract. The ADH facilitating effect of bean sprout extract by distilled water was significantly higher than dropwort or radish, hut the effect of the bean sprout extract by ethyl alcohol was lower than others. The facilitating effect on ADH of mixture extracts of bean sprout and dropwort were mixed at 1 : 1 mixture of boiled-water extract showed the highest effectiveness. And bean sprout extract separated below 3000 molecular weight (MW) range of extract fraction had greater ADH activity than large MW parts.
Effect of Decyl Alcohol Emulsifiable Concentrate on sucker control and phytotoxicity to tobacco plants were tested on flue-cured tobacco and burley tobacco. There were no significant differences of sucker inhibition effect between Decyl Alcohol EC and Choline Salt of Maleic Hydrazide Soluble Concentrate(control chemical). Tobacco plants applied with Decyl Alcohol EC showed no visible symptoms of phytotoxicity and no significant differences of number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, and stalkt height. Yields increased considerably with no difference from ones of plants treated with control chemical.
The purpose of this study was to compare the hand disinfection effect of waterless alcohol gel hand washing agent with that of soap and water, 4% chlorhexidine gluconate, and 10% povidone-iodine. Hands of fourty subjects were artificially contaminated with Acinetobacter baumannii $5m{\ell}$ and randomly distributed to each hand washing methods. Samples were collected from gloved hand by glove juice sampling procedure. Mean log reduction after hand washing were compared with baseline values. Number of microorganisms were converted to log and tested by ANOVA in SPSSWIN 10.0. Mean log reduction of soap and water, alcohol gel, 4% chlorhexidine gluconate, 10% povidone-iodine were $2.76{\pm}0.62$, $2.97{\pm}0.56$, $4.66{\pm}1.70$, $4.60{\pm}0.91$, respectively. The bactericidal effect of alcohol gel was similar to that of soap and water, but the effect was much less than chlorhexidine gluconate and povidone-iodine(p<0.001). In terms of microorganism reduction, the efficacy of waterless alcohol gel was almost the same as soap and water hand washing. Further evaluation of the bactericidal effect of waterless alcohol gel is needed because waterless alcohol gel is simple, convenient, and non-irritating hand washing agent and also very effective in busy hospital environment.

The present study was undertaken to clarify the effect of Puffer fish skin extract (PF) on the hepatic alcohol metabolism in rats. It was observed that alcohol concentration in blood had been markedly decreased by the pretreatment of PF for two weeks. Activities of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and microsomal ethanol-oxidizing system (MEOS) were significantly incrased (more than 20% of control) by pretreatment of PF for two weeks and acute alcohol intoxication (5 g/kg) on final day. When rats were fed with subacute toxic state by alcohol (25v/v % , once a day for six weeks), activities of ADH and MEOS were significantly increased by additional treatments of PF for final two weeks. But the catalase activity was not affected by any of both case. And also activities of ADH and MEOS in vitro were not changed . These results suggest that PF treatemnt prompted the recovery from alcohol intoxication.
Benzyl alcohol is known to have dual effect on the red blood cell shape change. At low concentration up to 50 mM benzyl alcohol transformed the shape from discocyte to stomatocyte by preferent binding to the inner hemileaflet, however, at higher concentratransformed the shape from discocyte to stomatocyte by preferential binding to the inner monolayer, however, at higher concentration above 50 mM benzyl alcohol transformed to echinocyte by affecting both monolayers. These results suggest that the effect of benzyl alcohol on the red blood cell shape and $Ca^{++}$ transport across cardiac cell membranes to assess the effects of the drug on the structures and functions of the biological cell membranes. The results are as follows: 1) Benzyl alcohol up to 40 mM caused progressive stomatocytic shap change of the red blood cell but above 50 mM benzyl alcohol caused echinocytic shape change. 2) Benzyl alcohol up to 40 mM inhibited both osmotic hemolysis and osmotic volume change of the red blood cell in hypotonic and hypertonic NaCl solutions, respectively. 3) Benzyl alcohol inhibited both Bowditch Staircase and Wood-worth Staircase phenomena at rat left auricle. 4) Benzyl alcohol at concentration of 5 mM increased $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity of red blood cell ghosts slightly but above S mM benzyl alcohol inhibited the $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity. 5) Benzyl alcohol at concentrations of 5 mM and 10 mM increased $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity slightly at rat gastrocnemius muscle S.R. but above 10 mM benzyl alcohol inhibited the $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity. Above results indicate that benzyl alcohol inhibit water permeability and $Ca^{++}$ transport across cell membranes in part via effects on the fluidity and transition temperatures of the bulk lipid by preferential intercalation into cytoplasmic monolayer and in part via other effect on the conformational change of active sites of the $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ molecule extended in cytoplasmic face.
Alcoholism is a significant health problem in the world. The liver is the first and primary target organ for alcohol metabolism. Alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase play important roles in the metabolism of alcohol and aldehyde. In this study, I aimed to investigate the eliminatory effects of a Phellinus spp. extract on alcohol metabolism in drunken Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Male SD rats were given Phellinus spp. extract at 30 min after 40% (5 g/kg) alcohol ingestion. To assay the effect of Phellinus spp. extract on blood alcohol concentration, blood samples were taken from the tail vein at 1, 3 and 5 h after alcohol ingestion. The concentrations of alcohol, alcohol dehydrogenase, and aldehyde dehydrogenase in Phellinus spp. extract treated rat were significantly lower than that of the control with a time-dependent manner. In addition, the alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities of Phellinus spp. extract-treated groups were altered compared to those of the control group. These results suggest that Phellinus spp. extract intake can have a positive effect on the reduction of alcohol, alcohol dehydrogenase, and aldehyde dehydrogenase concentrations in the blood and may alleviate acute alcohol-induced hepatotoxicity by altering alcohol metabolic enzyme activities. Phellinus spp. extract is thus a good nutraceutical candidate.
