Design studio is a unique type of course in architecture and interior design education, in which learning is based on student-instructor interaction and learning by doing; yet little research has been conducted on student perceptions of the ideal design studio instructor. The purpose of this paper was to identify characteristics of the ideal studio instructor from student perspectives. Three award-winning design studio instructors' studio activities were observed, and the three instructors and their 40 students were interviewed. As a result, characteristics in four categories were identified. The author argues that providing customized feedback and allowing student autonomy are the two distinct characteristics that students value in design studio as compared to students in other fields or type of courses. The findings provide valuable insights to design educators who would like to strengthen their teaching studios by listening to student voices.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of aroma inhalation on stress responses (physical symptoms, levels of anxiety, perceived stresses)of nursing students. Method: This study was a quasi-experimental research using anon-equivalent pre-post design and was conducted from June 1 to June 5, 2002. The subjects consisted of 77 junior nursing students who were divided into 39 experimental group members and 38 control group members. A pretest and Post-test were conducted to measure body symptoms, the level of anxiety, and the level of perceived stress. In the experimental group, aromas were given using an aroma lamp, lavender, peppermint, rosemary and Clary-Sage. In the control group, the treatment was not administered. Result: As a result of administering aroma inhalation to nursing students, their physical symptoms decreased, their anxiety scores were low, and their perceived stress scores were low, showing that aroma inhalation could be a very effective stress management method. Conclusion: Nursing educators should play an important role in contributing to college students' physical and psychological health by helping enhance their recognition of stress management and effectively relieving their stress using essential oils.
This study addressed the effects of environmental attitude improved using forest environmental interpretation program. While previous research has focused developing interpretation program itself, this study analyzed the effects that environmental interpretation has improved toward pro-environmental attitude. This program was designed self-guiding interpretive techniques at Mt. Palgongsan Provincial Park. Environmental attitude was measured using 12 statements which was based on fifth-graders attitude scale in U.S.A. Data were collected from 84 elementary school participants in this program. Results showed that attitude scores of participants increased toward pro-environmental attitude. Especially, three statements (interest, safe and benefits of forest) are statistically significant differences between pre- and post survey. Results can be used by outdoor educators to evaluate and plan their environmental interpretation programs and methods.
This paper investigates instructional strategies with potential for improving students' achievement in word problem solving. This review compares and analyzes the direct instruction (DI) and cognitively guided instruction (CGI) research on K-3 word problem solving mathematics students in a demonstration of my position that teachers need to understand student mathematical thinking to enhance students' achievement in word problem solving. CGI provides a more appropriate instructional model than DI for teaching word problem solving. For example, student-centered, conceptual understanding, and children's informal or invented problem solving strategies communicating with each other mathematically, etc. Korean teachers and teacher educators need to consider implementing CGI teaching strategies.
This paper proposes a modified category framework derived from VAMP and VIMT projects for describing teachers' mathematical and pedagogical values, and examines the dialectical relations between values awareness/willingness and teaching, based on case studies of student teachers of secondary mathematics from a follow-up project of VIMT. The preliminary results show that student teachers would teach certain values depending on the awareness of values priority, willingness to teach, their teaching capabilities and classroom conditions. So, mathematics teacher educators should provide relevant courses to facilitate student teachers to be aware of their implicit values and be willing to enact these values, and to empower student teachers with the knowledge and experiences to teach the values.
This study deals with the postmodern perspectives in mathematics classroom. Today, mathematics and mathematics education can be explored through postmodernism because they have very different practices, pluralism, and anti-authoritarianism. Thus practices and researches of mathematics classroom are coherent to postmodern perspectives such as situated theory, anthropological approach, and interactionism. In these socio-cultural views, learners' milieu and participation, language of classroom activities, and culture of mathematics classroom are considered very important. Therefore, it is required that both mathematics educators and researchers make a change toward postmodernism in attitude and subject of mathematics classroom research.
With the increased use of computational technology, many educators question about spending large amount of class time for dealing with computational algorithms in elementary school math classroom at the expense of more holistic aspects of mathematics such as number sense, spatial sense, problem solving and data management. This paper introduce the new method for learning addition and subtraction so called ‘Mrs. Weill’s Hill’, which is believed as a suitable remedial method for children with mathematical learning disabilities, with perceptual problems, or with limited working memory capacities. This method provides children with external memory strategies by allowing them to solve the addition and subtraction problems in a stage by stage fashion with as many steps as they require. It also gives the child greater flexibility in the solution process and thus helps reduce anxiety.
Asian Americans is a minority population contributing approximately 4% to the total population of the United States, however it is one of the fastest growing populations. Although Asian Americans as a group have socioeconomic profiles that are similar to white Americans, significant variations exists within and across Asian ethnic groups. The top ten leading causes of death for Asian Americans includes cancer, heart diseases, stroke, unintentional injuries, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, chronic lower respiratory disease, suicide, nephritis, and septicemia. The prevalence of obesity is lower among Asian Americans, however this should be taken with considerations specific to Asians. High salt and low calcium consumption seem to be dietary risk factors for Asian Americans, although dietary patterns are changing with acculturation. Factors affecting dietary patterns are discussed in this paper. A proactive nutrition education approach for Asian Americans should be promoting maintaining 'healthy' aspects of ethnic diets and adopting 'healthy' American diets. Collaboration with nutrition educators in Asian countries would be helpful to overcome limited resources available for researching and developing nutrition education messages and materials for Asian Americans. Competency and competency-based education are topics of great interest to educators and administrators at most stages of undergraduate and postgraduate medical training. A competency-based approach in medical setting has been valued as a more effective way to strengthen learners' performance compared to the traditional education program. This article aims to explore theoretical and practical possibilities and limitations of competency-based medical education. We approached the topic in 3 gradual steps: the comprehension of background of competency-based education, the conceptual understanding of competency in professional education, and the exploration of possibilities and limitations of competency-based medical education. The last step of analysis was performed in three dimensions: educational objectives, references to judge performance, and performance evaluation criteria. In conclusion, we suggest 4 factors which need to be considered to implement a competency-based medical education.
This paper is to make strides toward an enriched understanding of the difficulties and issues raised by applying the 7th mathematics curriculum to elementary school classrooms. A general overview of the curriculum is presented in line with teaching and learning methods emphasized in the curriculum. Four classroom episodes are presented in brief in order to diagnose the problems in situating the curriculum in elementary mathematics classrooms. These episodes deal with lessons emphasizing activity rather than its associated concepts or principles, overusing multimedia data, pursuing play rather than its associated thinking, and distributing various individual worksheets in the name of differentiated instructional methods. In addition to the episodes, interview data with elementary school teachers also are presented as needed. This paper discusses two aspects of activating the curriculum into elementary mathematics classrooms. One deals with the issues of the curriculum and textbooks themselves, and the other covers those of research trends on mathematics education and teaching practices. This paper finally emphasizes a collaborative working relation among classroom teachers, mathematics educators, and policy makers with their own places and roles.
