  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing maternal identity of Korean primiparas. Methods: The data were collected by a self-report questionnaire in 2006. The participants were 210 healthy primiparous women who delivered at one of three medical centers and revisited the outpatient department for follow up between 4 to 6 weeks after childbirth. Data were analyzed using the SPSS WIN 17.0 program with descriptive statistics, t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Maternal identity was significantly correlated with Taekyo accomplishment, the culturally based prenatal preparation (p<.001). Transitional gratification to motherhood (p<.001), postpartum depression (p<.001), childcare stress (p<.001), infant temperament (p<.001), and social support (p<.001) were also significantly correlated with maternal identity. The stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that maternal identity was significantly predicted by transitional gratification to motherhood, infant temperament, childcare stress, and Taekyo accomplishment. These variables explained 31.0% of the variance of maternal identity. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that postpartum nursing interventions to promote maternal identity should focus on reinforcing education and support for reducing childcare stress and infant difficulty, and increasing transitional gratification to motherhood. Also, prenatal encouragement and education for improving Taekyo accomplishment may be helpful to promote maternal identity after birth.

  • This study examined the current status of the medical professionalism curriculum in Korea to suggest a plan to move towards the formation of a professional identity. Professionalism education data from 28 Korean medical schools were analyzed, including the number of courses, required or elective status, corresponding credits, major course contents, and teaching and evaluation methods. Considerable variation was found in the number of courses and credits in the professionalism curriculum between medical schools. The course contents were structured to expand learners' experiences, including the essence and knowledge of professionalism, understanding of oneself, social interaction with others, and the role of doctors in society and the healthcare system. The most common teaching methods were lectures and discussions, while reflective writing, coaching, feedback, and role models were used by fewer than 50% of medical schools. Written tests, assignments and reports, discussions, and presentations were frequently used as evaluation methods, but portfolio and self-evaluation rates were relatively low. White coat ceremonies were conducted in 96.2% of medical schools, and 22.2% had no code of conduct. Based on the above results, the author suggests that professional identity formation should be explicitly included in learning outcomes and educational contents, and that professional identity formation courses need to be added to each year of the program. The author also proposes the need to expand teaching methods such as reflective writing, feedback, dilemma discussion, and positive role models, to incorporate various evaluation methods such as portfolios, self-assessment, and moral reasoning, and to strengthen faculty development.

  • Purpose: This study explored the relationship between types of gender role identity and health behaviors in 500 adults. Method: Data was collected with self-reporting questionnaire forms from April 23 to May 4, 2007. using the Korean Gender Role Identity Inventory and Health Behavior Assessment Tool. Results: The mean (SD) was 2.65 (0.42) for gender role identity, and 2.61 (0.38) for health behaviors. The subjects were classified into four gender role identity types; 30.4% in undifferentiated, 27.8% in androgyny, 22.4% in masculinity, and 19.4% in femininity. Four gender role identity types of subjects showed significant different levels of health behaviors (F=40.33, p<.001). The androgyny type subjects reported the highest mean of health behaviors scores, and the undifferentiated type subjects had the lowest mean. There were significant differences in health behaviors according to subjects' general characteristics, such as age, marital status, perceived health status, and smoking (p<.005). Conclusion: There is a need to make changes in family, school, and society toward better environments for helping adults develop desirable gender role identity. In addition, the gender role identity in adults has to be considered in establishing healthy lifestyles and developing health promotion programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of career identity on learning persistence and academic achievement, and mediating effect of utility value. To examine the effect of mediating role of utility value, we divided utility value into two types, utility value of daily matters and utility value of career. This study was conducted on 228 senior students in high school, to investigate relations among career identity, utility value, learning persistence and academic achievement in mathematics, by using the structural equation model. The results are as follows. First, career identity positively predicted learning persistence in mathematics. Second, career identity positively predicted the utility value of daily matters and career. Third, both type of utility value in mathematics positively predicted learning persistence in mathematics. Fourth, the utility value of daily matters and career, in mathematics subjects, showed differential predictability toward learning persistence and academic achievement. Both type of utility value in mathematics positively predicted learning persistence, but showed differential predictability toward learning academic achievement. Specifically, the utility value of daily matters in the near future did not predict the academic achievement, but the utility value of career in the distant future positively predicted the academic achievement. Fifth, the utility value was found to play a mediating role in the relationship between career identity and learning persistence. Based on the results of this study, implications for mathematics education were discussed.
