An experimental study is conducted for the turbulent recirculating flow behind a backward-facing step when the oscillating jet is issued sinusoidally through a thin slit at the separation edge. Two key parameters are dealt with in the present experiment, i.e., the amplitude of forcing and the forcing frequency. The Reynolds number based on the step height is varied from 25,000 to 35,000. In order to investigate the effect of local forcing, turbulent structures are scrutinized for both the flow of forcing and the flow of no forcing. The growth of shear layer with a local forcing is larger than that of no forcing. The influence of a local forcing brings forth the decrease of reattachment length and the particular frequency gives a minimum reattachment length. The most effective frequency depends on the non-dimensional frequency, St/sub .theta./, based on the momentum thickness at the separation point. A comparative study leads to the conclusion that the large-scale vortical structure is strongly associated with the forcing frequency and the natural flow instability.
It has been studied the flow near a rotating disk with surface topography. The system Ekman number is assumed very small, i.e., $E[{\equiv}\frac{\nu}{{\Omega}^{\ast}L^{\ast2}}]<<1$ in which $L^{\ast}$ denotes a disk radius, ${\nu}$ kinematic viscosity of the fluid and ${\Omega}^{\ast}$ angular velocity of the basic state. Disk surface has a sinusoidal topographic variation along radial coordinate, i.e., $z={\delta}cos(2{\pi}{\omega}r)$, where ${\delta}$ and ${\omega}$ are, respectively, nondimensional amplitude and wave number of the disk surface. Analytic solutions, being useful over the parametric ranges of ${\delta}{\sim}O$( $E^{1/2}$ ) and ${\omega}{\leq}O$ ( $E^{1/2}$ ), are secured in a series-function form of Fourier-Bessel type. An asymptotic behavior, when $E{\rightarrow}0$, is clarified as : for a disk with surface roughness, in contrast to the case of a flat disk, the azimuthal velocity increases in magnitude, together with the thickening boundary layer. The radial velocity, however, decreases in magnitude as the amplitude of surface waviness increases. Consequently, the overall Ekman pumping at the edge of the boundary layer remains unchanged, maintaining the constant value equal to that of the flat disk.

In an ultrasonic glass scriber, the effect of ultrasonic vibration and its optimum driving frequency were investigated experimentally. To investigate the optimum ultrasonic frequency theoretically, the vibration model of the ultrasonic scriber is assumed. The frequency for maximum amplitude of acceleration is obtained theoretically. To investigate the depth of cutting edge corresponding the each frequency. The quartz glass plate specimen with a dimension of $200mm(L){\times}30mm(W){\times}3mm(T)$ is selected. The ultrasonic transducer is operated by the constant acceleration amplitude for the every frequency. The maximum crack depth was generated when the driving frequency was 18.35kHz. These results were in good agreement with those of the calculated model theoretically.

Fretting is a contact damage process that occurs between two contact surfaces. Fretting fatigue reduces fatigue strength of the material due to low amplitude oscillatory sliding and changes in the contact surfaces of strongly connected machine and structure such as bolt, key, pin, fixed rivet and connected shaft, which have relative slip of repeatedly extreme low frequency amplitude. In this research, the fretting fatigue behavior of 2024-T3511 and 7050-T7451 aluminum alloys used mainly in aircraft and automobile industry were experimentally estimated. Based on this experimental wort the following results were obtained: (1) A significant decrease of fatigue lift was observed in the fretting fatigue compared to the plain fatigue. The fatigue limit of 2024-T3511 aluminum alloy decreased about 59% while 7050-T7451 aluminum alloy decreased about 75%. (2) In 7050-T7451 specimen using ATSI4030 contact pad, crack was initiated more early stage than using 2024-T3511 contact pad. (3) In all specimens, oblique cracks were initiated at contact edge. (4) Tire tracks and rubbed scars were observed in the oblique crack region of fracture surface.

This Paper describes a crack scattering model for SH wave based on the boundary integral equation(BIE) method, where the fundamental unknown is crack opening displacement(COD). When a time harmonic plane wave was incident on a 2-D isolated crack (slit) of width 2a, the COD distributions were numerically calculated as a function of ka. The calculated COD agreed well with results obtained with other methods. The far-field scattering amplitude, which completely characterizes the flaw response, was calculated in two ways. The Kirchhoff approximation and the BIE-COD exact formulation were compared in terms of incidence angle and frequency ka in a pulse-echo mode. Maximum response was obtained for both methods at the specular reflection direction. Away from the specular direction, the Kirchhoff approximation becomes less accurate. The time domain crack response was also calculated using a band-limited spectrum of center frequency 10 MHz. At oblique incidence to the crack both methods show the existence of an antisymmetric flash points occurring from the crack edge. The Kirchhoff approximation provides an exact time interval between flash points, although it unrealistically gives the same amplitude.
Anisotropic materials are increasingly required in modern technological applications. Certainly, civil, mechanical and naval engineers frequently deal with the situation of analyzing the dynamical behaviour of structural elements being composed of such materials. For example, panels of anisotropic materials must sometimes support electromechanical engines, and besides, holes are performed in them for operational reasons e.g., conduits, ducts or electrical connections. This study is concerned with the natural frequencies and normal modes of vibration of rectangular anisotropic plates supported by different combinations of the classical boundary conditions: clamped, simply - supported and free, and with additional complexities such holes of free boundaries and attached concentrated masses. A variational approach (the well known Ritz method) is used, where the displacement amplitude is approximated by a set of beam functions in each coordinate direction corresponding to the sides of the rectangular plate. Consequently each coordinate function satisfies the essential boundary conditions at the outer edge of the plate. The influence of the position and magnitude of both hole and mass, on the natural frequencies and modal shapes of vibration are studied for a generic anisotropic material. The classical Ritz method with beam functions as spatial approximation proved to be a suitable procedure to solve a problem of such analytical complexity.

The aim of this study is to develop a semi-analytical method to investigate fluid-structure coupling of concentric double shells with different lengths and elastic behaviours. Co-axial shells constitute a cylindrical circular container and a baffle submerged inside the stored fluid. The container shell is made of functionally graded materials with mechanical properties changing through its thickness continuously. The baffle made of steel is fixed along its top edge and submerged inside fluid such that its lower edge freely moves. The developed approach is verified using a commercial finite element computer code. Although the model is presented for a specific case in the present work, it can be generalized to investigate coupling of shell-plate structures via fluid. It is shown that the coupling between concentric shells occurs only when they vibrate in a same circumferential mode number, n. It is also revealed that the normalized vibration amplitude of the inner shell is about the same as that of the outer shell, for narrower radial gaps. Moreover, the natural frequencies of the fluid-coupled system gradually decrease and converge to the certain values as the gradient index increases.

Generally, burrs refer to projected parts remained on the edge after material had been processed. These burrs decrease the precision of part and cause many problems in part assembly. Burrs are undesirable projections of the material beyond the edge of the workpiece. A number of deburring processes have been developed such as barreling, brushing, chemical methods etc. But, there are a few publications in the area of applying ultrasonics to deburring. When ultrasonic vibration propagates in the liquid medium, a large number of bubbles are formed. These bubbles generate an extremely strong force, which removes burrs. Cavitations were used as a term to describe erosion of parts caused by the action of cavities in liquid. The object of this study is to analyze the effects of ultrasonic cavitation in deburring process. For this purpose, we introduce a new ultrasonic cavitation method with abrasive, which efficiently removes the burrs. Experimental parameters to verify the deburring effects of ultrasonic cavitations are ultrasonic power, amplitude, distant of the transducer from the workpiece, deburring time and abrasive. It has been shown that deburring with ultrasonic cavitation in water is effective to burrs.

Using the T3 free-piston shock tunnel in ANU, the cavity frequency and flow characteristics of no mass-injection, inclined mass-injection before the cavity, parallel or reverse mass-injection in the cavity are investigated in the case of Mach 3.7 inflow condition. No mass-injection doesn't have the harmonic frequencies but has high amplitude of pressure spectrum at 10 kHz. Inclined mass-injection attenuates the cavity flow fluctuation as disturbing the shear layer reflection at the trailing edge. Parallel mass-injection flow reflects at the trailing edge of the cavity directly hence, increases the cavity flow fluctuation at high injection pressure.

The present study numerically investigates the effect of the wavy leading edge on hydrodynamic characteristics for the flow of rectangular wings with the low aspect ratio of 1.5. Five different wave lengths at fixed wavy amplitude have been considered. Numerical simulations are performed at a wide range of the angle of attack ($0^{\circ}{\leq}{\alpha}{\leq}40^{\circ}$) at one Reynolds number of $10^6$. The wavy wings considered in this study did not experience enough lift drop to be defined as the stall, comparing with the smooth wing. However, in the pre-stall region, the wavy wings reveal the considerable loss of the lift, compared to the smooth wing. In the post-stall, the lift coefficients of the smooth wing and the wavy wings are not much different. The pressure coefficient, limiting streamlines and the iso-surface of the spanwise vorticity are also highlighted to examine the effect of the wave length on the flow structures.
