Numerical prediction of the pollutant dispersion over a two-dimensional hilly terrain is presented. The dispersion model used in the present work is based on the gradient diffusion theory and the finite-volume method on a non-orthogonal boundary-fitted grid system. The numerical model is validated by comparing the results with the available experimental data for the flat-floor dispersion within a turbulent boundary-layer. The numerical error analysis is performed based on the guideline of Kasibhatla et al.(1988) for the elevated-source dispersion in the flat-floor boundary layer having a power-law velocity and linear eddy-diffusivity profile. The influences of the two-dimensional hilly terrain on the dispersion from a continuously released source are numerically investigated by changing the emission locations and heights. It is found that the distributions of ground-level concentration are strongly influenced by the source location and the emission height. Hence, the terrain amplification factor is greatly enhanced when the pollutant source is located within a flow separation region. Dispersion from a source of short duration is also simulated and the duration time of the pollutant is compared at several downstream locations on a hilly terrain. The results of the numerical prediction are applied to the evaluation of environmental impacts due to the automobile exhausts at the seashore highway with a parallel mountain range.

The flow through a centrifugal compressor rotor was calculated using the quasi-3-dimensional and fully 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes solution methods. The calculated results, obtained during the development of the computer codes for both methods are discussed. In the inviscid quasi 3-dimensional analysis, stream function formulation was used for the blade to blade (B-B) plane calculations, and the streamline curvature method was used for the meridional (H-S) plane calculations. In the viscous 3-dimensional flow analysis, a control volume method based on a general rotating curvilinear coordinate system was used to solve the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and a standard k-.epsilon. model was used to obtain eddy viscosity. The quasi-3-dimensional analysis reasonably predicts the pressure distributions and requires much less computation time in the region where viscous effects are not strong; however, it fails to predict velocity field and loss mechanism through the impeller passage. The viscous 3-dimensional flow analysis shows reasonable pressure distributions and typical jet-wake flow field through the impeller passage. Secondary flow and total pressure distributions on cross-sectional planes explain the loss mechanisms through the impeller.

This paper describes performance enhancement of a regenerative blower used for a 20 kW fuel cell system. Two design variables, bending angle of an impeller and blade thickness of an impeller tip, which are used to define an impeller shape, are introduced to enhance the blower performance. Internal flow of the regenerative blower has been analyzed with three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations to obtain the blower performance. General analysis code, CFX, is introduced in the present work. SST turbulence model is employed to estimate the eddy viscosity. Throughout the numerical analysis, it is found that the thickness of impeller tip is effective to increase the blower efficiency in the present blower. Pressure is successfully increased up to 2.8% compared to the reference blower at the design flow condition. And efficiency is also enhanced up to 2.98 % compared to the reference one. It is noted that low velocity region disturbs to make strong recirculation flow inside the blade passages, thus increases local pressure loss. Detailed flow field inside the regenerative blower is also analyzed and compared.

Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the impact of PBL (Planetary boundary layer) scheme implemented in WRF on the result of meteorological fields and CMAQ modeling. 25-day period, representing high ozone concentration, was selected for the simulations. The three WRF domains covered East Asia region, Korean Peninsula and Seoul metropolitan area. The sensitivity of WRF-CMAQ modeling to the various PBL schemes was assessed and quantified by comparing model output and against observation from the meteorological and the air quality monitoring network within the domain. The meteorological variables evaluated included temperature, wind speed and direction over surface sites and upper air sounding sites. The CMAQ variables included gaseous species $O_3$ and $NO_x$ over monitoring stations. Although difference of PBL schemes implemented in WRF, they did not appreciably affect the WRF and CMAQ performance. There are partially differences between non-local and local mixing scheme, but are not distinct differences for the results of weather and air quality. It is suggested that impact of parameterization of vertical eddy diffusivity scheme in CMAQ also need to be researched in the future study.
An Eulerian-Lagrangin approach is used to compute particle dispersion from a power plant chimney. For air flow, three-dimensional incompressible filtered Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a subgrid-scale model by integrating the Newton's equation, while the dispersed phase is solved in a Lagrangian framework. The velocity ratios between crossflow and a jet of 0.455 and 0.727 are considered. Flow fields and particle distribution of both cases are evaluated and compared. When the velocity ratio is 0.455, it demonstrates a Kelvin-Helmholtz vortex structure above the chimney caused by the interaction between crossflow and a jet, whereas the other case shows flow structures at the top of the chimney collapsed by fast crossflow. Also, complex wake structures cause different particle distributions behind the chimney. The case with the velocity ratio of 0.727 demonstrates strong particle concentration at the vortical region, whereas the case with the velocity ratio of 0.455 shows more dispersive particle distribution. The simulation result shows similar tendency to the experimental result.

An experimental study has been performed on a three-dimensional boundary layer over a rotating disk with an impinging jet at the center of the disk. The objective of the present study is to investigate the turbulence statistics of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer, which may be regarded as one of the simplest models for the flow in turbomachinery. Six components of the Reynolds stresses and ten triple products are measured by aligning the miniature X-wire probe to the mean velocity direction. The ratio of the wall-parallel shear stress magnitude to twice the turbulent kinetic energy in the near-wall region is strongly decreased by the impinging jet. In the case of the free rotating disk flow the shear stress vector lags behind the mean velocity gradient vector in the whole boundary layer, while the lag is weakened as the impinging jet speed increases.

Laminar and turbulent boundary layers on a rotating sector and a helical blade are calculated by differential method. The estimation of three dimensional viscous flows provide quite useful informations for the design of propellers and turbo-machinery. A general method of calculation is presented in this paper. Calculated laminar boundary layer on a sector shows smooth development of flows from Blasius' solution at the leading edge to von Karman's solution of a rotating disk at the down-stream. Eddy viscosity model is adopted for the calculation of turbulent flows. Turbulent flows on a rotating blade show similar characters as laminar flows. But cross-flow angle of turbulent flows are reduced in comparison with laminar boundary layers. Effects of rotation make flow structures significantly different from two-dimensional flows. In the range of Reynolds number of model scale propellers, large portion of the blade are still in the transition region from laminar to turbulent flows. Therefore viscous flow pattern might be quite different on the blade of model propeller. The present method of calculation is to be useful for the research of scale effects, cavitation, and roughness effects of propeller blades.

Hydraulic performance of a micro-bubble pump has been analyzed by numerical simulation and experimental measurements. Flow recirculation apparatus between the pump inlet and outlet reserviors has been adopted to measure pump performance according to flow conditions sequentially. To analyze three-dimensional flow field in the micro-bubble pump, general analysis code, CFX, is employed. SST turbulence model is employed to estimate the eddy viscosity and compared the pump performance to k-${\varepsilon}$ model. Unstructured grids are used to represent a composite grid system including blade, casing and inlet casing. It is found that the numerical model used in the present study is effective to evaluate the pump performance. From the numerical simulation, low velocity region due to pressure loss is decreased where pump efficiency has maximum value. Detailed flow field inside the micro-bubble pump is also analyzed and compared.

Linear estimation in isotropic turbulence is examined to approximate conditional averages in the form of fluctuating velocity fields conditioned on local velocity. The conditional flow fields and their associated vorticity field are computer using experimental data [Van Atta and Chen] and energy spectrum model [Driscoll and Kennedy]. It appears that ring vorticies could be the dominant structure. Due to the extremely large vorticity in the viscous region of a conditional ring vortex, the energy spectrum model can be used appropriately by changing the Reynolds number. The hairpin vortex could be detected by combining vorticies in isotropic field with an anisotropic orientation imbedded in uniform mean shear flow and this is consistent with other studies [Kim and Moin].

Aviation turbulence, caused by atmospheric eddies, is a disruptive phenomenon that leads to abrupt aircraft movements during flight. To minimize the damages caused by such aviation turbulence, the Aviation Meteorological Office provides turbulence information through the Korea aviation Turbulence Guidance (KTG) and the Global-Korean aviation Turbulence Guidance (GKTG). In this study, we evaluated the performance of the KTG and GKTG models by comparing the in-situ EDR observation data and the generated aviation turbulence prediction data collected from the mid-level Korean Peninsula region from January 2019 to December 2021. Through objective validation, we confirmed the level of prediction performance and proposed improvement measures based on it. As a result of the improvements, the KTG model showed minimal difference in performance before and after the changes, while the GKTG model exhibited an increase of TSS after the improvements.
