Many researches on measurement technology has been made and developed by various methods. Considering the measurement environment with cutting fluid, coolant and the like, contact type measurement methods are mostly used. But contact measurement method has measuring force and so the sensing head becomes worn. By these reasons, we considered sensors not influenced by the former fluid and so can acquire accrate measured values using error compensation due to temperature and vibration. For this purpose, eddy current sensors and Extended kalman Filter Algorithm for processing measured data has been used. In this paper, we present new technology that can be used for measuring workpiece with previous bad environment using direct method and comparison measurement method. We used cylindrical workpieces which were produced by grinding machine for the target.

Induction is a method of heating electrically conductive materials such as metals. It is commonly used in process heating prior to metalworking and in heating, welding, and melting. The number of industrial and consumer items which undergo induction heating during some stage of their production is very large and rapidly expanding. So a program to analyze the induction heating system was developed through the research. This thesis contains the procedure for developing the program. Both eddy current and temperature distribution are obtained through the analysis of the induction heating system. The program was developed to calculate 2-dimensional axisymmetric problem. The validity of the program is scrutinized through the comparison between the analytic solution and the numerical solution.

In a high speed spindle system, it is very important to monitor the operation of the spindle to prevent catastrophic damage to the system. Widely used sensors for monitoring are eddy-current and capacitive types. These sensors provide high accuracy of monitoring, but their steep prices lead to expensive high speed spindle system. The main god of our research is to develop technology to produce high speed spindle system utilizing magnetic bearings. As active magnetic bearings require position sensors for feedback control, a noncontact position sensor is bang developed as a part of this main goal. Once developed, it will contribute to affordable high speed spindle system. In this paper, we report the selection process of the sensor types and the experimental results with driving circuits.
A new Pareto-optimal design algorithm, requiring least computational work, is proposed for a single phase AC solenoid actuator with multi-design-objectives: maximizing holding force and minimizing eddy current loss simultaneously. In the algorithm, the design space is successively reduced by a suitable factor, as iteration repeats, with the center of pseudo-optimal point. At each iteration, the objective functions are approximated to a simple second-order response surface with the CCD sampling points generated within the reduced design space, and Pareto-optimal solutions are obtained by applying($1+{\lambda}$) evolution strategy with the fitness values of Pareto strength.

It is difficult to calculate the magnetic force of an object of magnetic material in contact with other objects using the existing methods, such as Maxwell stress tensor method, magnetic charge method, or magnetizing current method. These methods are applicable for force computation only when the object is surrounded by air. The virtual air-gap concept has been proposed for calculating the contact force. However, its application is limited to magneto-static system. In this paper, we present the virtual air-gap concept for contact surface force in the eddy-current system. Its validity and usefulness are shown by comparison between numerical and experimental examples.
Ocean currents estimated from sea height anomalies derived from inter-calibrated TP/ERS are compared with daily mean currents measured with satellite-tracked drifters. The correlation coefficient between the geostrophic current from TP/ERS and surface current at 15 m depth from drifter tracks was found to be about 0.5. Due to the limitation of satellite ground tracks, small scale eddies less than 80 km are poorly resolved from TP/ERS. One of the interesting results of this study is that coastal currents along the eastern coast of Korea were well reproduced from sea height anomalies when the coastal currents were developed in association with eddies near the South Korean coast. The eddy kinetic energy (EKE) estimated from drifters, TP/ERS, and a numerical model are also compared. The EKE estimated from drifters was about 22 % higher than EKE calculated from TP/ERS. The pattern of low EKE level in the northern basin and high EKE level in the southern East Sea is shown in the EKE estimates derived from both the drifters and TP/ERS.
The electric wave propagation characteristics of electromagnetic field by induction current shows a nonlinear distinction in the metal but linear on air. This paper is written about the magnetic transmission distinction in the metalic tube, which wrapped the center axis by the same direction. The electromagnetic field made by the transmission signal is transferred from the transmission coil area toward the receiving coil by the magnetic diffusion. So, it is different magnetic flux around the coil with one in the remote field area. Analyzing such a complex magnetic characteristic, we verified this theory by the vector analysis and presented eddy current mechanism and analytical model about magnetic distribution in the remote field area. This magnetic distribution rate in metal body will be very useful in the nondestructive inspection of the eddy current in remote field which is recently rising as a new technology.
CTD data taken in the Ulleung Basin between 1996 and 2001 are analyzed to understand the hydrography around Dokdo. Major features occurring in the Ulleung Basin such as the path variability of the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC), the location and size of the Ulleung Warm Eddy (UWE) and the position of the Offshore Branch along the Japanese coast all influence the hydrography around Dokdo. The Dokdo area frequently lies in the eastern part of the meandering EKWC and the UWE that results in a filting of isolines sloping upwards to Dokdo in the Ulleung Interplain Gap (UIG) between Ulleungdo and Dokdo. Subsurface water near Dokdo then becomes colder and less saline than water near Ulleungdo. Two cases that are opposite to this general trend are also identified when the Dokdo area is directly affected by the EKWC and by a small scale eddy ffd by the Offshore Branch. High salinity cores and warm waters are then found near Dokdo with isolines sloping upwards to Ulleungdo. Freshening of the East Sea Intermediate Water was observed in the UIG when neither the EKWC nor the UWE was developed in the Ulleung Basin during June-November 2000.

This paper is concerned with a computational method for recovering a crack shape of steam generator tubes of nuclear plants. Problems on the shape identification are discussed arising in the characterization of a structural defect in a conductor using data of eddy current inspection. A surface defect on the generator tube ran be detected as a probe impedance trajectory by scanning a pancake type coil. First, a mathematical model of the inspection process is derived from the Maxwell's equation. Second, the input and output relation is given by the approximate model by virtue of the hybrid use of the finite element and boundary element method. In that model, the crack shape is characterized by the unknown coefficients of the B-spline function which approximates the crack shape geometry. Finally, a parameter estimation technique is proposed for recovering the crack shape using data from the probe coil. The computational experiments were successfully tested with the laboratory data.

Ball-end milling process is widely used in the die and mold manufacturing because of suitable for the machining of free-form surface. Pencil cutting can eliminate overload in uncut area caused by large diameter of ball-end mill before finish cutting. As the ball-end mill for pencil cutting is long and thin, it is easily deflected by cutting force. The tool deflection when pencil cutting is one of the main reason of the machining errors on a free-from surface. The purpose of the research is to find out the characteristics of deflected cutter trajectory by eddy-current sensor.
