This study uses a numerical model to investigate the circulation patterns of the tidal and wind driven current components. The model is vertically averaged 2-D transient using explicit nume-rical scheme, based on equation of motion and continuity. forced by water elevation at open boundaries and wind stress. The model domain extends from 35$^{\circ}$N to 36$^{\circ}$40'N lat., and 125$^{\circ}$E to 126$^{\circ}$40'E long. with x, y grid spacing of 5 km. The model reproduces the tide and tidal currents by 4 major constituents successfully with more than 90% accuracy when compared to two offshore tidal records and currents at one offshore measurements for 22 days. Responses of coastal waters to six schematic wind events are analyzed in terms of current distribution patterns and local features. Regardless of wind directions. strong coastal currents were produced. Bottom topography plays a critical role in producing a local eddy Held whose center is located offshore Pu An with its major radius of 40 km.
The optimal design for Electro-magnetic Launcher (EML : Rail Gun) considering structural and electrical constraints are presented. For the structure of EML under high pulsed currency, the cross section is minimized subject to maximum stress of each element(rail, side wall, ceramic, and steel) within allowable stress and preload limits. The electrical constraint is the effective ceramic thickness which prevents the eddy current effect reducing the performance of EML. The stress analysis and optimization procedure of 90mm EML is conducted with ANSYS Code. The optimal design under preload is reduced to 53% of area compared with optimal design without preload. In case of rail with arc angle .theta.=45.deg., the performance of EML is the best among the other rail arc angles. The optimal design for rail with arc angle .theta.=45.deg., results in the reduction of 9% of area and 10.4% of deformation compared with Fahrenthold's design. The optimal preload 59.8MPa is much lower than Fahrenthold's design(186MPa). The results show that the optimal design of EML meets the design requirements.
Combustion instability occurred in the combustion test of solid rocket motor with large aspect ration Length/Diameter (L/D) and cylinder-slot grain. As a result of spectral analysis of the pressure perturbation, it was confirmed that the central axis longitudinal frequency was dominant, so that the length of the cylinder part was increased to eliminate the coincidence with acoustic node. In addition, acoustic modal analysis and flow analysis were performed to analyze the cause of instability by unsteady flow structure in solid rocket motors. It was confirmed that the combustion instability is reduced by quantitative comparison of the amplitude and frequencies of the pressure inside the combustion chamber using the grain shape before and after the design change. Finally, a combustion test was performed to verify that the combustion instability was resolved as in the flow analysis.

Rocket noise generated from the exhaust plume produces the enormous acoustic loading, which adversely affects the integrity of the electronic components and payload (satellite) at liftoff. The prediction of rocket noise consists of two steps: the supersonic jet exhaust is simulated by a method of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and an acoustic transport method, such as the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff integral, is applied to predict the noise field. One of the difficulties in the CFD step is to remove the boundary reflection artifacts from the finite computation boundary. In general, artificial damping, known as a sponge layer, is added nearby the boundary to attenuate these reflected waves but this layer demands a large computational area and an optimization procedure of related parameters. In this paper, a cost-efficient way to separate the reflected waves based on the two microphone method is firstly introduced and applied to the computation result of a laboratory-scale supersonic jet noise without sponge layers.

Recent experimental data shows that the noticeable feature of irregular roughened spots on the fuel surface occurs during the combustion test. The generation of these unexpected patterns is likely to be resulted from the disturbed boundary layer due caused by wall blowing which is intended to simulate the process of fuel vaporization. LES without chemical reaction was conducted to investigate the flow characteristics at the near-fuel surface and the behavior of turbulent structures which is evolved by the wall blowing at the Reynolds number of 23,000. Cylindrical geometry was considered to get the most reality of the calculation results because real hybrid rocket motor is circular grain configuration. It was shown that the wall blowing pushed turbulent structures upwards making them tilted and this skewed displacement, in effect, left the foot prints of the structures on the surface. This change of kinematics may explain the formation of irregular isolated spots on the fuel surface observed in the experiment.

Long-span suspension bridges have evolved through the years and with them, the bridge girder decks improved as well, changing their shapes from standard box-deck girders to twin box and multi-box decks sections. The aerodynamic characteristics of the new generation of twin and multiple-decks are investigated nowadays, to provide the best design wind speeds and the optimum dimensions such bridges could achieve. The multi-box Megane bridge deck is one of the new generation bridge decks, consisting of two side decks for traffic lanes and two middle decks for railways, linked between them with connecting beams. Three-dimensional CFD simulations were performed by employing the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) algorithm with a standard Smagorinsky subgrid-scale model, for $Re=9.3{\times}10^7$ and angles of attack ${\alpha}=-4^{\circ}$, $-2^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, $2^{\circ}$ and $4^{\circ}$. Also, a wind tunnel experiment was performed for a scaled model, 1:80 of the Megane bridge deck section, for $Re=5.1{\times}10^5$ and the aerodynamic static coefficients were found to be in good agreement with the results obtained from the CFD-LES model. However the aerodynamic coefficients determined individually, from the CFD-LES model, for each of the traffic and railway decks of the Megane bridge, varied significantly, especially for the downstream traffic deck. Also the pressure distribution and the effect of the spacing between the connecting beams, on the wind speed profiles showed a slight increase in turbulence above the downstream traffic and railway decks.
The pumping of coolant in a liquid metal fast reactor may be performed with an annular linear induction electro-magnetic (EM) pump. Linear induction pumps use a traveling magnetic field wave created by poly-phase currents, and the induced currents and their associated magnetic field generate a Lorentz force, whose effect can be the pumping of the liquid metal. The flow behaviors in the pump are very complex, including a time-varying Lorentz force and pressure pulsation, because an induction EM pump has time-varying magnetic fields and the induced convective currents that originate from the flow of the liquid metal. These phenomena lead to an instability problem in the pump arising from the changes of the generated Lorentz forces along the pump's geometry. Therefore, a magneto-hydro-dynamics (MHD) analysis is required for the design and operation of a linear induction EM pump. We have developed a time-harmonic 2-dimensional axisymmetry MHD analysis method based on the Maxwell equations. This paper describes the analysis and numerical method for obtaining solutions for some MHD parameters in an induction EM pump. Experimental test results obtained from an induction EM pump of CLIP-150 at the STC "Sintez," D.V. Efremov Institute of Electro-physical Apparatus in St. Petersburg were used to validate the method. In addition, we investigated some characteristics of a linear induction EM pump, such as the effect of the convective current and the double supply frequency (DSF) pressure pulsation. This simple model overestimated the convective eddy current generated from the sodium flow in the pump channel; however, it had a similar tendency for the measured data of the pump performance through a comparison with the experimental data. Considering its simplicity, it could be a base model for designing an EM pump and for evaluating the MHD flow in an EM pump.
Fabrication condition and magnetic properties of ultrathin Co-based amorphous alloy have been investigated. When the ejection gas pressure was lower than 0.05 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at the roll speed of 55 m/s, ultrathin ribbons with the thickness less than 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were successfully obtained. The ribbon thickness decreased linearly with the decrease in ejection pressure. Moreover the significant decrease in ribbon width was accompanied with the decrease of thickness in the range of ejection pressure to form an ultrathin ribbon. This behavior was attributed to the decrease of effective ejection pressure in the both end-sides of rectangular nozzle due to the larger friction between molten metal and nozzle wall. The effective permeability at low frequency (1 kHz) decreased largely with the decrease in ribbon thickness, while the coercive force increased with the thickness decrease. It was considered that these behaviors were due to the enhancement of surface effect leading to the suppression of wall motion. However effective permeability at high frequency (1 MHz) increased with the decrease in ribbon thickness, and this was ascribed to the easier magnetization rotation owing to the reduction of eddy current.

Concerning the numerical simulation of high-speed water jet with intensive cavitation this paper presents a practical compressible mixture flow method by coupling a simplified estimation of bubble cavitation and a compressible mixture flow computation. The mean flow of two-phase mixture is calculated by URANS for compressible fluid. The intensity of cavitation in a local field is evaluated by the volume fraction of gas phase varying with the mean flow, and the effect of cavitation on the flow turbulence is considered by applying a density correction to the evaluation of eddy viscosity. High-speed submerged water jets issuing from a sheathed sharp-edge orifice nozzle are treated when the cavitation number, ${\sigma}=0.1$, and the computation result is compared with experimental data The result reveals that cavitation occurs initially at the entrance of orifice and bubble cloud develops gradually while flowing downstream along the shear layer. Developed bubble cloud breaks up and then sheds downstream periodically near the sheath exit. The pattern of cavitation cloud shedding evaluated by simulation agrees experimental one, and the possibility to capture the unsteadily shedding of cavitation clouds is demonstrated. The decay of core velocity in cavitating jet is delayed greatly compared to that in no-activation jet, and the effect of the nozzle sheath is demonstrated.

The flow around a foil with waterjet was investigated using the two-frame PIV(CACTUS 3.1) system. After separation, unsteady recirculation & reattachment region was shown as a result at reading edge. Separation area was decreased to 1/3 more by waterjet system with coanda effect. Angle of attack and waterjet velocity was a variable in the experiment. Each parameters was controlled to $0^{\circ}{\sim}35^{\circ}$ and 0[m/s]${\sim}$9.2[m/s]. The separation of flow appearanced at first when the angle of attack is $17^{\circ}{\sim}18^{\circ}$. However, according to grew up of velocity, beginning of the separation was delayed. In this experiment, vortex and separation region was disappeared by blown when each parameters are low level, and separation controlled more certainly.
