  • The dominant academic literature about trade agreements maintains that they are only about national terms-of-trade manipulation and not at all about purely political concerns. Non-academic economists, commentators, and diplomats by contrast think that trade agreements are all about political concerns. There are two substantive and important distinctions between the two views. i Practitioners maintain that policymakers care virtually not at all about the terms of trade or about trade-tax revenue. ii Practitioners, unlike academics, maintain that trade-agreement negotiations themselves change the underlying political economy. Observation of actual trade policy measures, though not conclusive, suggests that the practitioners are right and that the academics are wrong.

  • The Purpose of this study is to improve the deterrent factors in Korea's coastal passenger shipping on the basis of field data collected in order to help stimulate it and enhance its competitiveness. As the representative model of this study, the "P" car-ferry liner was chosen, whereby various deterrent factors were observed in the course of the SWOT analysis and through the questionnaires. The major deterrent factors in summary were inflexible government regulations for additional ship operation, disadvantages of taxes policy, port facility shortages, non-allowing of ship's night operation, complicated and inflexible ship's operation controls by the concerned authorities, unreasonable divisions of steaming areas, and existences of obstacles on the ship's running routes, etc. which considered all are important to activate the liners.

  • The concept of multiple-use forestry can be considered as a simple application of the economic theory which commands the efficient utilization of resources. This paper reviews two important branches of the economic theory-theory of the firm and the capital theory-and discusses various methodologies of measuring the non-timber benefits from the forest. In addition, an empirical analysis with an example of the Deogyu National Park is presented. For this purpose, the Clawson's Travel Cost Method was employed.

  • This Paper presents an efficient approach for solving the economic dispatch (ED) problems with valve-point effects using an combination of particle swarm optimization and harmony search. To reduce a premature convergence effect of PSO algorithm, We proposed PSO-HS algorithm considering evolutionary using harmony search algorithm. To prove the ability of the PSO-HS in solving nonlinear optimization problems, ED problems with non-convex solution spaces are solved with three different approach(PSO, HS, combination of PSO and HS)

  • This paper tests empirically the causal relationship between bank loans and the monetary base before and after the adoption of inflation targeting in seven Asia-Pacific countries using Toda-Yamamoto Granger non causality test and the bootstrap test for causality. The most striking finding is that the bank loans Granger cause the monetary base during the inflation targeting period in all the countries, except Japan, which was under the influence of the quantitative easing, whereas the causality appeared diverse before the inflation targeting regime. This result implies the need for the policy makers to take the endogenous nature of the money supply into account in the modern economy.

  • This study conducted an in-depth case study of bio-health companies in the Chungcheong region to examine the factors influencing the relocation of new industry cluster firms in non-metropolitan areas. Focusing on the experiences and perceptions of key stakeholders within the cluster, which have been relatively overlooked in previous research, this narrative research explored the factors that lead entrepreneurs who initially founded their businesses in non-metropolitan areas to relocate to metropolitan areas as well as the decision-making process involved. Through interviews with 61 key stakeholders within the Chungcheong cluster, it was observed that entrepreneurs receive various benefits from local stakeholders during the initial stages of entrepreneurship. However, as the company enters a phase of significant growth, matters such as securing specialized talent and market accessibility lead them to contemplate relocating to metropolitan areas. Based on case studies of companies that both remained and relocated in the Chungcheong region, this study examines structural drawbacks within non-metropolitan clusters and provides policy implications.

  • Negative induced polarization (IP) responses are examined for two-dimensional structures using a modeling technique with finite difference method. Percent frequency effect is used for IP parameter because it can be efficiently computed by a perturbation method. Thin conductive, polarizable overburden causes obvious negative IP responses on IP pseudosection. This fact means that IP responses from resistive, polarizable body below the overburden can be masked solely as a function of the resistivity distribution. Resistive, non-polarizable body below the overburden, however, can be detected by the negative IP responses.

  • The aim of this paper is to build up the design model using ASMOD(Adaptive Spline Modeling of Observation Data) for the optimum scale of fleet, ship particulars and ship speed, etc. ASMOD, which define membership functions of fuzzy rule as B-spline basis function, represents a whole system as the sum of the sub-model. As it reduces the number of division of the space generated by the fuzzy set of input variables, it has a advantage of simplification to model structure and is efficient to represent the non-linear model.

  • I use panel data of sales by the foreign subsidiaries of the U.S. MNCs to examine whether trading blocs create more or less FDI and the impacts on FDI of the extended market size created by forming blocs. By employing a region-fixed effects model, I find that countries forming trading blocs attract more FDI, particularly from non-member countries, but that FDI does not always increase with the market size of the blocs. As the market size increases, FDI increases only for large blocs. However, these findings are sensitive to model specifications. A policy implication is that a country considering forming or joining a trading bloc with a view to attract FDI may want to form a trading bloc with a country or countries with a large market size.

  • The Korean Economically Active Population Survey (KEAPS) is a national survey that produces employment-related statistics. The main purpose of the survey is to find out the economic activity status (employed/ unemployed/ non-employed) of the people. KEAPS has a unique characteristics caused by the survey method. In this study, through understanding of structural non-response and utilization of past data, we would like to present an improved imputation model. The performance of the proposed model is compared with the existing model through simulation. The performance of the imputation models is evaluated based on the degree of mathing/nonmatching rates. For this, we employ the KEAPS data in November 2019. For the randomly selected ones among the total 59,996 respondents, the six explanatory variables, which are critical in determining the economic activity states, are treated as non-response. The proposed model includes industry variable and job status variable in addition to the explanatory variables used in the precedent research. This is based on the linkage and utilization of past data. The simulation results confirm that the proposed model with additional variables outperforms the existing model in the precedent research. In addition, we consider various scenarios for the number of non-responders by the economic activity status.
