The need and importance of developing and utilizing the oceans, not only as sources of renewable energy and mineral resources, but also as countermeasures to global warming such as for CCS (carbon capture and storage), have continued to increase, especially in countries with limited land areas and resources. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the sustainability of an ocean utilization technology or system not only from an economic point of view but also from an ecological one. For this purpose, it might be effective to develop a comprehensive evaluation method and/or index, by which the assessment of and decisions about a technology and system can be made more objectively. It would also be useful to have an environmental simulation model, which was developed and reported in a previous research. The aim of this study was to modify a reasonable and quantitative index, with which a comprehensive evaluation system can be established, to assess environmental sustainability and risk.
A numerical simulation was conducted on perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in the Gwangyang Bay using a multi-box model to estimate the transport of organic chemicals in the coastal environment. The results of the sensitivity analysis on dissolved PFOS and PFOS in Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) indicate that they were most significantly influenced by the adsorption rate, desorption rate, and sinking velocity coefficients. PFOS in phytoplankton was found to be sensitive to bio-concentration and the excretion rate. The results of the mass balance indicate that the standing stocks of PFOS in water, POC, and phytoplankton are 345.55 g, 63.76 g, and 0.11 g, respectively, in the inner part and 149.90 g, 27.51 g, and 0.05 g, respectively, in the outer part. Considering flux in the inner part, adsorption to POC had the highest value among transition paths. The next highest were desorption, outflow to the outer part, and inflow to the inner part. Outflow into the open sea was found to have the highest value for the outer part.
A lightcourt design is typically used to address issues concerning aesthetics, feeling, and mood. From the view point of environmental aspect, as an ecological shaft space, it plays a key role in controlling inner quality. In particularly, the lightcourt concept allows the exploitation of daylighting by bring natural light into the center of the building, thus eliminating dark deep spaces. Additionally, the lightcourt shades the inner space in summer. The amount of light available at the base of the lightcourt depends on a number of factors; translucency of the top, reflectance and the geometry of the space. In this paper is to exemplify a lightcourt configuration with a sloped wall. It promises the maximized a sense of freedom and daylighting availability. It is a matter of course that the lightcourt with open-top plays a role as a light source for the adjacent space to the lightcourt. A series of lighting simulation provides performance data of daylighting with changing photometric factors. For the case that a skylight is not available, an electric lighting design with metal halide lamps has been established to create luminous ceiling. As expected, a sloped lightcourt with open-top exposes its superiority of daylighting source. Ancillary considerations to enhance of daylighting potential for the adjacent space have been issued with performance data.
Choosing an appropriate sample unit is a fundamental decision in the design of ecological studies. While numer-ous methods have been developed to estimate organism abundance, they differ in cost, accuracy and precision.Using both field data and computer simulation modeling, we evaluated the costs and benefits associated with twomethods commonly used to sample benthic organisms in temperatc kelp forests. One of these methods, theTargeted Sampling method, relies on different sample units, each "targeted" for a specific species or group ofspecies while the other method relies on coefficients that represent ranges of bottom cover obtained from visual esti-mates within standardized sample units. Both the field data and the computer simulations suggest that both meth-ods yield remarkably similar estimates of organisnm abundance and among-site variability, although the Coefficientmethod slightly underestimates variability armong sample units when abundances are low. In contrast, the twomethods differ considerably in the effort needed to sample these communities; the Targeted Sampling requiresmore time and twice the persormel to complete. We conclude that the Coeffident Sampling metliod may be bettcrfor environmental monitoring programs where changes in mean abundance are of central conccm and resources arelimiting, but that the Targeted sampling methods may be better for ecological studies where quantitative reIation-ships among species and small-scale variability in abundance are of central concern.
As a basic study for developing a forecasting/estimating system that predicts water quality changes when Deep Sea Water (DSW) drains to the ocean after using it, this study was carried out as follows: 1) numerical simulation of the present state at DSW developing region in the East sea using SWEM, 2) numerical prediction of water quality changes by effluent DSW, 3) analysis of influence degree 'With defined DEI (DSW effect index) at F station. On the whole, when DSW drained to the ocean, Chl-a, COD and water-temperature were decreased and DIN, DIP and DO were increased by effluent DSW, and Salinity was steady. According to analysis of influence degree, the influence degree of DIN was the highest and it was high in order of Chl-a, COD, Water-temperature, DO, DIP and Salinity. The influence degree classified by DSW effluent position was predicted that suiface outflow was lower than bottom outflow. Ad When DSW discharge increased 10 times, the influence degree increased about $5{\sim}14$ times.
Recently, the usage of renewable energy system has been recommended because of the energy saving and depletion of fossil fuel. Especially, ground source heat pump system(GSHP) has a high efficiency by using annual stable ground temperature. Also, wood pellet is low cost and a high calorific value compared to fossil fuel. However, only small number of farms have applied renewable energy system to horticultural facility because of a high initial costs and uncertainty of its cost efficiency. In this study, in order to analyze the feasibility for the horticulture, TRNSYS simulation based on the standard horticultural facility was conducted in different weather and covering material conditions. Then, comparative feasibility analysis of each energy supplying system was conducted. As a result, we have found out that a high initial cost of renewable energy system was recovered by the economics of the energy cost. Due to the energy cost reduction, the payback periods were 10-11 years in the case of GSHP and 4-6 years in the case of wood pellet boiler.
The observation of branching pattern on Magnolia denudata Desr. was performed from July 1982 to September 1983 and then computer simulation was carried out. Tree crown pattern depends on not genetic factors but also environmental factors and the determination of branchin pattern which characterized it appears to properly explain the relationships such as branching pattern and allocation of materials through the analysis of influence branches under several assumptions. Now that computer simulated simulated pattern was considered as the accumulation of two factors which controled the growth, it was represented as the stimulated tree which differs in branching rate that described allocation of material necessary for the growth of each branch. There was a tendency of allocation ratio of nutrients, i.e. subbranch to main branch to decrease by the passage of year. Under assumption that branch was branched when accumulated material reached 1, it was possible to represent the allocation of nutrients are residual $nutrient{\times}\frac{1}{1+F};in main; branch, ; residual; nutrient{\times}\frac{F}{1+F}$ in subbranch, A(iA, iC)+$F^(iA-1)$ in current twig. Like this, the basic minute difference of the allocation of nutrients according to the branch resulted in complicated patterns in the tree crown.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the land-use changes in the coastal areas using system dynamics modeling and to provide directions for effective management to maintain coastal dune areas. This research process consists of four steps: First, we built the basic model based on the causal loop diagram which was analyzed the land-use change of Sindu-ri Coastal Dune. Second, a time series land-use change map using Arc Map was established. Third, the validity of the basic model was tested. Finally, three simulations were performed for the cut over area($100,000m^2/y$, $150,000m^2/y$, $200,000m^2/y$) of windbreak for maintaining the coastal dune areas. Simulation of the basic model showed that the area of the coastal dune will be consistently decreased. Based on the simulation, if windbreak were cut down $150,000m^2/y$, windbreak area will be restored to the target area in 2019. This study has the limitation which the simulation is progressed with a limited variable: area. Therefore, the modeling of coastal dune should be reflected various variables in the further study.
Purpose: Suggesting a working prototype of a kinetic light shelf unit and revealing its energy efficiency by a series of building performance simulations were presented. Recently, kinetic building envelope has been an emerging technology as an innovative way to control exterior building environment, but products from many researches about the facade could not been reached to the industrialization so far. That is because its initial installation, operation and maintenance costs are still too high to use for the practical field, although buildings using kinetic envelopes could decrease their energy consumption significantly. This narrow point of view needs to be reconsidered, since buildings require great amount of energies to run their functions through the whole life and using better building components can lead to achieve much more benefits in aspects of the lifecycle cost (LCC). Method: A series of certified simulation tools like Ecotect and Green Building Studio that are normally used for researches and developments in the field of architecture were utilized. Result: Based on simulation analyses, the result of the study has showed that the proposed system definitely has adaptability to the professions and positively shows practicability as advanced integrative building envelopes with renewable energy association.
