  • Cooperative or non-territorial permanently social spiders are believed to have evolved from species showing subsocial maternal care. The transition from subsocial to cooperative social groups probably involved a transition from an outbreeding breeding system to one with inbreeding. Nepotistic recognition among siblings should facilitate the evolution of social cooperation through avoidance of inbreeding and maintenance of mutual tolerance between siblings. We conducted experiments to determine whether a mechanism for sibling recognition is present in the subsocial spider, Coelotes terrestris which displays extended maternal care in the form of food provisioning. The numbers of surviving individuals within unfed groups were observed and compared between non-sibling groups of ten spiderlings and groups of ten siblings. The number of survivors differed significantly between groups, with consistently fewer spiderlings surviving in the non-sibling groups than the sibling groups over the study period. This result suggests that sibling recognition and nepotism do occur in this subsocial species. The nepotism involved in the maternal social organization of the Coelotes might be an example of a preadaptation facilitating the evolution of permanent social life.

  • Fungal endophytes are defined as fungi inhabiting plant tissues, causing no apparent disease. As the agricultural and ecological importance of endophytes has increased, many studies have been performed on various aspects, ranging from basic identification, taxonomy, and evolution to secondary metabolites with potential for human use. In the Korean Peninsula, conifers are the most commonly found evergreen trees, with approximately 30 to 60 reported taxa. Studies on the effect of conifer-associated endophytes on the host plants are required for the preservation and conservation of coniferous forests which decline by climate change and deforestation. This review summarizes the diversity of endophytic fungi in coniferous trees of Korea and their relationship with host plants.

  • The phylogenetic analysis was carried out to find out the validity of Chrysochroa coreana as a new species. The insect specimens were collected at Kaohsiung, Taiwan and Shizuoka, Japan. Partial region (532 bp) of COI was amplified and sequenced. The sequences were aligned and then analyzed. Based on the Kimura-2-parameter method, we calculated genetic distances among them. It indicated that the Korean individual of C. fulgidissima was closely related to Taiwan one with relatively low genetic distance (0.083). On the other hand, the Japanese individual was remotely related with those of Korean (0.192) and Taiwan (0.183) individuals. To clarify if the populations of C. fulgidissima from Korea, Taiwan, and Japan are different at the level(s) of subspecies, species, or genus, it is necessary that more samples of the members of the family Buprestidae should be collected and genetically analyzed.

  • Over the past 15 years, downy mildew became the most destructive foliar disease in cultivated Impatiens species (Balsaminaceae) worldwide. A previous study had revealed that the causal agent was not Plasmopara obducens (Oomycota, Peronosporales) but Plasmopara destructor on Impatiens walleriana, and Plasmopara velutina on Impatiens balsamina. This hints to a relatively high degree of specialization of Plasmopara on Balsaminaceae. Therefore, it was the aim of the present study to perform multigene phylogenetic analysis and detailed morphological investigation for several Korean downy mildew samples parasitic to cultivated I. walleriana, and I. balsamina, but also to a northeast Asian wild plant, Impatiens textori. It was revealed that I. textori harbors a new species, which is introduced and described here as Plasmopara elegantissima.

  • Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) consists of six subfamilies, which are divided into three groups according to larval ecological habits (phytophagous, mycophagous, and zoophagous). The five basal subfamilies of Cecidomyiidae consist entirely of mycophagous species, with approximately 1500 species described worldwide and 29 previously known to occur in Korea. In this study, 37 named species (1 Lestremiinae, 29 Micromyinae, 4 Winnertziinae, and 3 Porricondylinae species) are newly reported from South Korea. We excluded Lestremia yasukunii Shinji from the list of Korean mycophagous cecidomyiids as it is a nomen nudum. Therefore, we herein officially recognize 65 species, 30 genera, and four subfamilies for the Korean mycophagous cecidomyiid fauna. We also provide diagnoses and photographs to aid species identification and discussion on the four years of gall midge taxonomic inventory in South Korea.

  • Eucephalobus oxyuroides (de Man, 1876) Steiner, 1936 belonging to the family Cephalobidae Filpijev, 1934 (Cephalobomorpha) is newly reported from South Korea. This species is distinguished from other Eucephalobus species by its pointed tail terminus, high lips and relatively longer female tail and body. From many previous studies, intraspecific variation in this species has been reported for body length, absence/presence of probolae, and number/position of papillae in the posterior region of male, posing an obstacle for identification and phylogenetic analysis. In this study, details of the morphological characters and morphometric of E. oxyuroides Korean population are described and illustrated based on optical microscopy.

  • Acrobeloides nanus (de Man, 1880) Anderson, 1968 belonging to the family Cephalobidae Filpijev, 1934 (Cephalobomorpha) is newly reported from South Korea. This species is distinguished from other Acrobeloides species by its low and blunt labial probolae, five lateral incisures with middle incisure extending to the tail tip, and bluntly rounded tail. In this study, details of morphological characters of A. nanus is described and illustrated based on optical and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, molecular sequence data of the D2-D3 region of 28S rDNA, 18S rDNA and mitochondria DNA cox1 region from this species are provided as DNA barcode sequences.

  • The field of microbiology has in recent years been transformed by huge increasing number of publicly available whole-genome sequences. This sequence information has significantly enhanced our understanding of the physiology, genetics, and evolutionary development of bacteria. Among the gastrointestinal microorganisms, bifidobacteria represent important human commensals because of their perceived contribution to maintaining a balanced gastrointestinal tract microbiota. In recent years bifidobacteria have drawn much scientific attention due to their use as live bacteria in numerous food products with various health-related claims. For this reason, these bacteria constitute a growing area of interest with respect to genomics, molecular biology, and genetics. Recent genome sequencing of a number of bifidobacterial species has allowed access to the complete genetic make-up of these bacteria. This review will focus how genomic data has allowed us to understand bifidobacterial evolution, while also revealing genetic functions that explains their presence in the particular ecological environment of the gastrointestinal tract.

  • The subgenus Idioglochina Alexander, 1921 belongs to the genus Dicranomyia Stephen, 1829 and has a special habitat unlike other congeners. The larval stage inhabits marine algae near the intertidal zones. The most distinctive characters are found in the antennae with inner face of flagellar segments extended to produce a serrate form. A total of 30 species of the subgenus Idioglochina are recorded with the distribution is restricted to the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. In this study, the subgenus and its species D. (I.) tokara (Nobuchi, 1955) are newly added to the Korean fauna. This species was previously recorded in Japan as an endemic species, but it was collected from Jeju Island. A redescription, period of activity, habitat information, and photographs of diagnostic characters of the species are provided. The female ovipositor is photographed for the first time.
