  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the recycling possibility of waste oyster shells, which induce environmental pollutions by piling up out at the open or the temporary reclamation. The purpose of this study is to develope eco-friendly binder using waste oyster shells, and to reinforce dredged soils fur soft soil improvement. In this paper, a series of laboratory tests including compressive strength tests were performed to evaluate strength characteristics of soils treated by developed binder with different water content of dredged soils, mixing rates of binder, curing days. Based on test results, eco-friendly binders manufactured from waste oyster shells were estimated as good resource materials for soft soil improvements.

  • In this study, laboratory mixture design test and field test were performed to evaluate applicability of eco-friendly binder material (CMD-SOIL) using desulfurized dust in deep cement mixing method (DCM). As a result of laboratory mixture design test, the uniaxial compressive strength of CMD-SOIL was up to 1.136 times bigger than slag cement by changing the water content, mixing rate, and W/B. Also, it had shown the strength up to 1.222 times bigger in shell content and up to 1.363 times in mixing of floating soil. As a result of field test, field strength/laboratory design criterion strength ratio (${\lambda}$) is shown 0.77. And this result was similar to earlier studies. From this result, CMD-SOIL can show the same efficiency compared with existing binder.

  • In this study, a series of soil concrete mixtures were tested for the compressive strength according to ratio of aggregate to binder, compaction energy, maximum aggregate size, ratio of silica fume to cement, and ratio of water to binder. The optimum mixing ratio of soil concrete mixtures composed of volcaniclastic, cement, silica fume, concrete polymer and water were analysed. The test results for optimum proportion were as follows ; (1)ratio of aggregate to binder was 4 : 1, (2)compaction energy level was level 2, (3)maximum aggregate size was 13 mm, (4)ratio of silica fume to cement was 10%, (5)ratio of water to binder was 25%. Also, dry type construction techniques were applied using the optimum soil concrete mixture. From the results of this study, the compressive strength of soil concrete and construction techniques were suitable for making eco-friendly soil pavement.

  • The soil improvement method so far has been developed with an emphasis on enhancing the strength of the ground. A soil improvement method using a excellent cementitious stabilizer in economical efficiency and handling property is mainly used. The soil improvement method using cementitious stabilizer is effective but environmental and human harmful substances are detected and environmental problems such as carbon dioxide emission and groundwater pollution are pointed out. Therefore, as part of an alternative method capable of solving such problems, researches on the soil improvement method incorporating biological technology are being actively carried out. This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of strength change when mixed with environmentally friendly soil binder and microorganism in clay, and it was analyzed by uniaxial compression test, direct shear test, SEM, XRD. As a results of the test, we confirmed the cementation caused by microbially induced calcite precipitation and the strength increase enhancement by it.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the stabilizing capability of oyster shell binder, which was developed using waste oyster shell inducing environmental pollutions by piling up out at the open or the temporary reclamation. The purpose of this paper is to compare stabilinzing capability of oyster shell binder and cement binder with treated soils. For this, a series of compressive laboratory tests were peformed to evaluate strength characteristics of treated soils by both oyster shell binder and cement binder with varing water content of dredged soils, different mixing rates of binder and curing days. Based on test results, eco-friendly binder manufactured by oyster shells showed more stabilizing capacity than cement binder and is estimated as good resource materials for soft soil improvements.

  • In general, pipe laying works are performed by constructing underground facilities such as pipes and then refilling the rest of the area with sand or soil. However, there are many problems in the compaction process such as difficulties in tampering around the underground facility and low compaction efficiency. Such problems cause deformation and damage to the underground pipes during refilling work and ultimately cause road sinks. Construction methods using CLSM are one of the typical methods to solve these issues, and recently, studies on CLSM using coal ash, which has similar engineering properties as sand, have been actively performed to protect environment and recycle resources. While many studies have been conducted to recycle fly ash in many ways, the demand for recycling bottom ash is increasing as most of the bottom ash is not recycled and reclaimed at ash disposal sites. Therefore, in order to find bottom ash applications using eco-friendly soil binders that are environmentally beneficial and conform with CLSM standards, this study investigated flow characteristics and strength change characteristics of eco-friendly soil binders, weathered granite soil, a typical site-generated soil, bottom ash, and fly ash mixed soil and evaluated the soil pollution to present CLSM application methods using bottom ash.

  • This study aims to provide basic data for soil packaging differing in accordance with the strength characteristics of mixed soil, using E.S.B. (Eco Soil Binder), an eco-friendly hardening agent, based on the type of soil. The soil used in this study is weathered granite soil readily collected in and around Korea, and is classified into SW, SP and SC according to soil classification systems. The test piece for the unconfined compressive strength test has dimensions of 50 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height, with the mix ratio of E.S.B. proportional to the weight of mixed soil changed from 5% to 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%, where compactness of 90% and 100% were applied according to each condition to analyze the unconfined compressive strength characteristics at material ages of 3, 7, and 28 days. Also, the ratio of soil packaging standard strength and unconfined compressive strength was calculated to determine the optimal E.S.B. mix ratio, whereby the field applicability of the unconfined compressive strength using the estimation equation of ACI209R was evaluated.

  • Much oyster shell is breeding by character and conduct of oyster-industry for a long time among them. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the recycling possibility of waste oyster shells, which induce environmental pollutions by piling up out at the open or the temporary reclamation. The purpose of this study is to develope eco-friendly binder using waste oyster shells, and to reinforce soils fur soft soil improvement. In this paper, a series of laboratory tests including compressive pot tests were performed to evaluate characteristics of soils treated by developed waste oyster shells with different water content of soils. Based on test results, eco-friendly Supporter manufactured from waste oyster shells were estimated as good resource materials for soft soil improvements. We got the conclusion by a series of experiment, It is verified that change of pH of soil is improved by mixing with oyster shells. The homogenization method for deducing apparent of oyster shells, which can consider micro-structure of mixed soil, is introduced. The improvement treatment leaded to enlarge fluctuation of soil moisture content. The effect of calcium concentration was good though improvement treatment of physical property. In addition, the crop yield in amelioration plots increased. It means that the increase of crop yield was caused by improvement of soil physical properties rather than improvement of calcium concentration.

  • In the S.C.W (soil cement wall) grouting solution, Cement grout ratio of 1 part Portland cement and 1part water is being used. However, Co2 and harmful heavy metals such as cr6+ are discharged in the process, causing a serious environmental issue. The purpose of the present study is therefore to substitute cement grout to inorganic binder and identify durability properties of ground solidification materials.
