  • Environmental regulations are becoming more stringent in response to climate change, especially concerning marine pollution caused by ship emissions. Large ships are adjusting by integrating technologies to reduce pollutant emissions and transitioning to eco-friendly fuels such as low-sulfur oil and LNG. However, small ships face space constraints for installing LNG propulsion systems and the risk of power depletion with pure electric propulsion. Consequently, there's growing interest in researching hybrid propulsion methods that combine electricity and diesel for smaller vessels. Hybrid propulsion systems utilize diverse energy sources, requiring an effective method for evaluating their efficiency. This study proposes employing Bond graph modeling to comprehensively analyze energy dynamics within hybrid propulsion systems, facilitating better understanding and optimization of their efficiency. Modeling of the ship's energy system using Bond graphs will be able to provide a framework for integrating various energy sources and evaluating their effects.

  • Renewable Portfolio Standards(RPS) is a regulation that requires a renewable energy generated from eco-friendly energy sources such as biomass, wind, solar, and geothermal. The RPS mechanism generally is an obligatory policy that places on electricity supply companies to produce a designated fraction of their electricity from renewable energies. The domestic companies to supply electricity largely rely on wood pellets in order to implement the RPS in spite of undesirable situation of lack of wood resources in Korea. This means that the electricity supply companies in Korea must explore new biomass as an alternative to wood. Palm kernel shell (PKS) and empty fruit bunch (EFB) as oil palm wastes can be used as raw materials used for making pellets after their thermochemical treatment like torrefaction. Torrefaction is a pretreatment process which serves to improve the properties including heating value and energy densification of these oil palm wastes through a mild pyrolysis at temperature typically ranging between 200 and $300^{\circ}C$ in the absence of oxygen under atmospheric pressure. Torrefaction of oil palms wastes at above $200^{\circ}C$ contributed to the increase of fixed carbon with the decrease of volatile matters, leading to the improvement of their calorific values over 20.9 MJ/kg (=5,000 kcal/kg) up to 25.1 MJ/kg (=6,000 kcal/kg). In particular, EFB sensitively responded to torrefaction because of its physical properties like fiber bundles, compared to PKS and hardwood chips. In conclusion, torrefaction treatment of PKS and EFB can greatly contribute to the implement of RPS of the electricity supply companies in Korea through the increased co-firing biomass with coal.

A Study on the RDF making Process of Heat-dried Sludge from Cheonan by using Oil-drying Method (유중건조를 이용한 천안시 열건조물의 고형연료화 공정 연구)

  • This study examined the optimal manufacturing conditions of RDF using heat-dried sludge from sewage treatment plant in Cheonan with the oil-drying method. The amounts of oil evaporation and oil drying of the heat-dried sludge were measured at different temperatures to evaluate the value of the product. The performance of the product was then measured using a calorimeter and TGA. In addition, the concentration of odor, NH3, H2S, and TVOC during drying was determined using a portable odor-meter. Ingredient analysis was performed by EDS. Considering mass-production, the oil to heat-dried sludge weight ratio was fixed to 4:1. At $130^{\circ}C$, only physical mixing occurred after the instantaneous drying of internal water. Considering the eco-friendly aspects, there was no significant difference in the drying efficiency between $160^{\circ}C$ and $190^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the optimal conditions were a drying temperature of $160^{\circ}C$ within 5 minutes. Finally, the RDF manufactured in this study and fuel used in the thermal power plants were compared. The calorific value was 4,449kcal/kg, the water content was 2% and the ash content was 34%, which is higher than the fuel of thermal power plants. Therefore, it is believed that coal energy as well as wood pellets can be replaced.

A study on the RDF(Refuse Derived Fuel) making process of Livestock manure sludge by oil-drying method (유중건조를 이용한 축산분뇨슬러지의 고형연료화 공정 연구)

  • In this study, we found the optimal manufacturing conditions of livestock manure sludge RDF with the oil-drying method. We performed oil evaporation, oil drying and pelletizing of the sludge to evaluate the value of the product (sludge RDF), and measured the performance of the product using calorimeter and PXRF equipment. Also, we conducted the calorie comparison test between sludge RDF manufactured in this study and wood RDF generally used in the field. Experimental results showed that 30g of the sludge treated by vegetable oil at $130^{\circ}C$ for 25 minutes were the optimal conditions to make the sludge RDF (considering the aspects of eco-friendly and mass production). The caloric value of the sludge RDF manufactured in this study was 5211kcal/kg which is higher than that of wood RDF used widely in the market. Finally, PXRF results showed sludge RDF contains no heavy metals with the exception of sulfur. Therefore, we recommend more study about the sulfur control process for future development of the industrial manufacturing process.

Studies on Chemical Strutures and Adhesion Performance of pMDI Adhesives Modified by Ozonized Soybean Oil with Different Mixing Ratios (오존산화 콩기름의 구조분석 및 이를 이용한 변성 pMDI 접착제의 중량비에 따른 접착력 변화)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate and develop an eco-friendly wood adhesive based on vegetable oil (especially soybean oil), the renewable and sustainable natural resources, using ozonification technology for the chemical structure modification. The soybean oil (SBO) was reacted with $O_3$ at the rate of 7.13 g/h for different times, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 120 minutes. The investigation of the modified chemical structure of the ozonized SBOs were conducted using FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR, MALDI-TOF MS, and GC/MS. As ozonification time increased, the peak of the unsaturated double bonds was disappeared and aldehyde or carboxyl peak appeared because ozonification broke the oil into small molecules. The plywoods were made at $110^{\circ}C$ with 30 seconds/mm hot-press time using the different ozonized SBO/pMDI adhesives and were tested for the dry, wet, cyclic boil test according to the Korea Industrial Standard F3101 Ordinary plywood. The bond strengths gradually increased with increasing ozonification time. The weight ratio 1:1 (ozonized SBO/pMDI), all strengths in 15, 30 and 60 minuets, exceeded constantly the dry, wet, cyclic boiling standard requirement. The range of ozonification time and weight ratio can fulfil1 the requirment of the wet test standard were 30~60 minutes and more than 0.5 pMDI. From the comprehensive view on the results of above experiments, it could be confirmed through experiments that ozonized SBO/pMDI has characteristics of effective reactivity and wet stability showed as an excellent candidate of wood adhesive applications.

Thus, companies are trying hard to construct effective logistics and operation system to achieve high customer service quality and saving cost. Also the ec-friendly idustrial complex is needed. Busan is in process to construct GILC(Global Industry Logistics City) in west Busan province to achieve high competitiveness and support lack of industrial complex. To construct this kind of logistics industrial complex, it needs logistics system through proper policy and freight transportation co-operation. Especially, efficient management through logistics hierarchy construction in industrial complex is very important for low cost and eco-friendly point of view. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze logistics system and suggest operation model to present logistics complex construction base data.

A study of the analysis of shaft alignment considering hull deflections for 50,000 DWT oil/chemical tankers (5만 DWT 석유화학제품운반선의 선체변형을 고려한 추진축계 정렬해석 연구)

  • The shaft system of a vessel becomes stiffer because of larger engine power, whereas the hull structure becomes more flexible because of scantling optimization conducted by using high-tensile thick steel plates. The draught-dependent deformation of the hull affects each bearing offset and reaction force comprising the subsequent shaft system. This is the reason that more sophisticated shaft alignments are required. In this study, an FE analysis performed under the expected operating conditions of two (2) vessels, as maximum draught change and to analyze the shaft alignment using the relative bearing offset change, which was derived from an FE analysis of the 50,000 DWT oil/chemical tanker, which has become an eco-friendly vessel in recent years. Based on this, the influence of the hull deflection on the bearing offset was reviewed against results for shaft alignment conditions.

  • During the initial stage of propulsion shaft design, the shaft alignment process includes a thorough consideration of lateral vibration to verify the operational safety of the shaft. However, a theoretical method for analyzing forced lateral vibrations has not been clearly established. The methods currently used in classification societies and international standards can only ensure a sufficient margin to avoid the blade-passing frequency resonance speed outside the range of ${\pm}20%$ of the maximum continuous rating (MCR) for the engine. Typically, in shaft alignment analyses, longer center distances between the support bearings promote affirmative results, but the blade order resonance speed can approach the lower limit for lateral vibration. Therefore, this matter requires careful attention by engineers, and a verification of the theoretical analysis by experimental measurements is highly desirable. In this study, both theoretical and experimental analyses were conducted using strain gauges under two draught conditions of vessels used as 50,000-DWT oil/chemical tankers, introduced recently as eco-friendly ships. Based on the analyses, the influence of the lateral vibration on the shafting system and the system's reliability was reviewed.

  • In modern ships, the shafting system often becomes stiff owing to the high engine power, whereas the hull structure becomes more flexible owing to optimization using high-tensile-strength thick steel plates; therefore, more sophisticated shaft alignments are required. In this study, strain gauge-based measurement was conducted under five vessel operating conditions and bearing reaction forces and hull deflections affecting shaft alignment were analyzed for a 50,000 dead weight tonnage oil/chemical tanker that has gained repute as an eco-friendly vessel in recent years. Furthermore, the analytical results from each technique-theoretical calculation, jacking ups, and strain gauges-were cross-checked against each other in order to enhance the degree of accuracy and reliability of the calculation.
