  • To understand functional changes of forest ecosystems due to climate change, correlation between decomposition rate of leaf litter, an important function of forest ecosystems, and microclimatic factors was analyzed. After 48 months elapsed, percent remaining weight of Quercus mongolica leaf litter was 27.1% in the east aspect and 37.0% in the west aspects. Decay constant of Q. mongolica leaf litter was 0.33 in the east aspect and 0.25 in the west aspect after 48 months elapsed. Initial C/N ratio of Q. mongolica leaf litter was 38.5. After 48 months elapsed, C/N ratio of decomposing Q. mongolica leaf litter decreased to 13.43 in the east aspect and 16.72 in the west aspect. Average air temperature and soil temperature during the investigation period of the research site were 8.2±9.0 and 9.1±9.3 in the east and 8.5±7.4 and 9.3±7.3℃ in the west aspect, respectively, with the west aspect showing higher air and soil temperatures. Soil moisture showed no significant difference between east and west aspects (average soil moisture: 19.4±11.0% vs. 20.5±5.7%). However, as a result of analyzing the correlation between decomposition rate and microclimatic factors, it was found that the decomposition rate and soil moisture has a positive correlation(r=0.426) in the east aspect but not in the west aspect. Our study shows that the correlation between decomposition rate and microclimatic factors can be significantly different depending on the direction of the aspect.

  • The collection of PM10 samples were collected by a PM10 hi-vol. air sampler from June, 1998 through May, 1999 in Kunsan located at western coastal region of Korea. We obtained 84 samples during sampling period. Samples were analyzed to quantify the concentration of ionic and metallic components such as SO42-, NO3-, Cl-, NH4+, K+, Na+, Mg2+, Zn, Cd, Cr, Pb and Fe. Seasonal variations of the concentrations by wind directions of each component were studied. We found that PM10 concentration had the highest level in winter and the lowest level in summer. When the wind direction is from west to east, the concentration of most ionic and metallic species were higher compared to reverse direction. That implied the effect of air pollutants from industrial area. Also, substantial amount of Na+ and Cl- were observed, which was assumed to the effect from the sea.

  • The BeiDou is a satellite-based positioning and navigation system, which is under construction by the China Satellite Navigation Office. Until the June of 2014, the constellation of BeiDou navigation satellite system consists of 14 satellites including five geostationary earth orbit (GEO), five inclined geosynchronous earth orbit (IGSO) and four medium earth orbit (MEO). In this paper, we present the positioning results using BeiDou B1 code measurements obtained from three GNSS reference stations (BHAO, SKMA, MKPO). Combined Beidou/GPS positioning results are also compared to BeiDou and GPS only. BeiDou-only positioning errors for the east-west and north-south direction had less than 2 meter with root mean square (RMS) value. However, the positioning error for the up-down direction had larger than 10 meter at a 95% confidence level. Our results also suggest that the position precision is improved by combined BeiDou/GPS compared to BeiDou-only.

  • Recently, many studies have considered the effect of atmospheric pressure loading (APL) on precise global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data processing. The APL deforms the Earth's crust. It can often exceed 10 mm in radial displacement. In this study, we analyze the APL effect on Multi-GNSS kinematic precise point positioning (PPP). In addition, observations received at two GNSS reference stations (DAEJ and SUWN) in South Korea were processed. The absolute position changes for the two stations were compared to before and after applying the APL effects from January 1 to February 29, 2020. The crust of South Korea was most affected by the APL in the up direction. With the APL model, the difference in daily position changes was mostly within 4 mm in the radial direction. On the other hand, the horizontal components (east-west and north-south) were relatively less affected than the radial component.

  • Recently, researches that are using deep learning technology in various fields are being conducted. The fields include geographic map processing. In this paper, I propose a method to infer where the map area included in the image is. The proposed method generates and learns images including a map, detects map areas from input images, extracts character strings belonging to those map areas, and converts the extracted character strings into coordinates through geocoding to infer the coordinates of the input image. Faster R-CNN was used for learning and map detection. In the experiment, the difference between the center coordinate of the map on the test image and the center coordinate of the detected map is calculated. The median value of the results of the experiment is 0.00158 for longitude and 0.00090 for latitude. In terms of distance, the difference is 141m in the east-west direction and 100m in the north-south direction.

  • Petrological, paleomagnetic, geomorphological and structural studies on the southern part of, so called, Chugaryeong rift valley, have been carried out in order to clarify the nature of the rift valley. Three stages of volcanic activities characterized by Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks and tholeiitic and andesitic basalt of Cretaceous age(?), and Jongok Quaternary olivine basalt occurred along the Dongducheon fault line. Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks distributed in the central part of the studied area consist of rhyodacite, acidic tuff and tuff breccia, which are bounded by Dongsong fault on the east and Daegwangri fault on the west. The Jongok basalt differs from those of Ulrung and Jeju islands in mineralogy, chemical composition and differentiation. Jongok basalt distributed along the Hantan river dilineates the vesicles curved toward downstream direction and increment of numbers and thickness of lava flow toward upstream direction. These facts suggest that lava flowed from upstream side of the river. Rectangular drainage patterns also support the presence of the Dongducheon, Pocheon, Wangsukcheon and Kyonggang faults which were previously known. LANDSAT image, however, does not show any lineaments which could be counted as a graben or rift valley. Displacement of Precambrian quartzite and Jurassic Daedong supergroup along the southwestern extension of the Dongducheon fault shows the right lateral movement. The Paleomagnetic study of the tholeiitic and andesitic basalts from Baegeuri, Jangtanri and Tonghyeonri located at 2. 3km east, 0km east, and 1.5km west of Dongducheon fault respectively shows that their VGP(Virtual Geomagnetic Pole) being to intermediate geomagnetic field of short duration which suggests that they formed in almost same period. Mean VGP of Jongok basalt is located 82.4N and 80.6E. This is in good coincidence with worldwide VGP of Plio-Pleistocene indicating that Jongok basalt was extruded during Plio-Pleistocene epoch, and suggesting that the studied area has been tectonically stable since then. From the present study, the tectonic episode of the region is concluded as following three stages. 1. The 1st period is worked by the Daebo orogeny of Jurassic during which granodiorite was intruded in Precambrian basement. 2. The 2nd period is the time when right lateral strike-slip fault of NNE-SSW direction was formed probably during late Cretaceous to Paleogene and the Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks and the older basalts were extruded. 3. The 3rd period is the time when the fault was rejuvenated during Pliocene or Pleistocene accompanied by the eruption of Jongok basalt. As a conclusion, geologic structure of the studied area is rather fault line valley than graben or rift valley, which is formed by differential erosion along the Dongducheon fault suggesting a continuation of the Sikhote-Alin fault. The volcanic rocks including the Jijangbong acidic rocks, tholeiitic-andesitic basalt and olivine basalt are associated with this fault line.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to suggest the standard of the direction sign on the pendant switch of overhead cranes which can reduce human errors in control. Background: A great number of crane accidents occur in industries. One of the major causes of the accidents is the mistake in the control of cranes by confusing the orientation of crane movements. Nevertheless, three different direction sign styles, 'East, West, South, North (EWSN)', 'Forward, Backward, Left, Right (FBLR)', and arrows for four directions are used without standardization. Method: An overhead crane simulator was installed for a laboratory experiment. It could move along six directions by the control of a pendant switch. 90 participants were evenly assigned to the three different conditions of direction sign styles. The participants were asked to control the pendant switch according to the continuously appearing 16 direction signs on a monitor ahead. The participants were allowed to refer an orientation sign board on the ceiling representing correct movement directions of the overhead crane simulator. Results: The direction sign style, 'EWSN', showed statistically significant better performance in task completion time and number of errors than the other sign styles. The direction sign style, 'EWSN', adopting the cardinal direction system, made the participants clear in direction controls after customizing to the crane movements. However, the direction sign styles, 'FBLR' and the arrows adopting the relative direction system made conflicts in direction controls due to the egocentric view of human. Conclusion: The direction sign style, 'EWSN', is the most appropriate for the standardization of the direction sign on the pendant switch of overhead cranes. Application: The results of this study can be applied to the standardization of direction sign in the legal notification on the safety certifications of crane manufacturing.

  • The time-series of Walker circulation index (WCI) in this study shows the strengthening of the Walker circulation in recent years. To further understand the large-scale features related to the WCI strengthening, a difference between the averaged meteorological variables in two time periods 1999-2013 and 1984-1998 is analyzed. The difference in 850 hPa stream flows between the two periods shows that the anomalous easterlies (anomalous trade wind) are dominant due to the strengthening of anomalous anticyclonic circulations at the subtropical Pacific of both hemispheres. The difference between the averaged zonal atmospheric circulations over $5^oS-5^oN$ in the two periods confirms that upward flows are strengthened at the tropical western Pacific and downward flows are strengthened at the tropical central and eastern Pacific in recent years. It matches the WCI strengthening in recent years. The time-series of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis frequency from July to September shows that a mean TC genesis frequency from 1999-2013 decreases compared to that of the time period 1984-1998. The monsoon trough in the period 1984-1998 was located in the further east direction and stronger than that in the period 1999-2013. TCs in the recent period that are generated in further west than TCs in the past period moved from the west. Thus, the TC intensity along the coasts in East Asia becomes weaker in recent period. The intensification of Walker circulation in recent years is related to the weaker TC intensity in East Asia through strengthened anomalous anticyclones at the subtropical western Pacific.

  • In this study the AWS was installed in three areas to analyze creation and characteristics of local wind circulation through observation. According to the result, in night time when mountain wind is well developed showed temperature in A area located in Dalbigol valley and B area adjacent with the valley was lower than C area located in the lowland of the center of city by $1.5\sim4^{\circ}C$. The wind speed was also shown two times stronger than C area. In addition, in terms of wind direction, A and B areas showed east wind consistently according to topographic shapes of Dalbigol valley with high altitude and residential sites of lowland with low altitude. Although the C area didn't show big changes in wind direction due to the effects of city structures, east wind is often seen so mountain wind from Dalbigol valley is found to have an effect at least. Through the analysis of temperature, wind speed, and wind direction, nigh time showed relatively cold mountain wind blew following Dalbigol valley, throughout residential sites and to the center of city with lowland. During the daytime, the temperature in the city with lowland and residential sites is constantly higher than A area located in Dalbigol valley, and strong wind speed following Dalbigol valley, and three areas have $200\sim300^{\circ}$ of main wind direction, so west valley wind throughout the city with lowland and following Dalbigol is clearly formed.

  • Based on the Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) observation and serial oceanographic observation of National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) during July 2013 to July 2015, we examined the temperature variation in the Ulleung Warm Eddy (UWE) in the East Sea. The UWE was always shown during the observation periods even though it was not the whole shape. The coefficient of variation (CV) was largest in the depth of 250 m at the side of the east coast of Korean Peninsula with $3{\sim}4^{\circ}C$ in temperature. CV of the horizontal distribution at 250 m depth was also largest in the region biased along the east coast of Korea. The warm eddy moved not only to the east-west direction but also to the north-south direction in the viewpoint of horizontal distributions of temperature. This region between the Korean Peninsula and Ulleung island also is the passage of the East Korean Warm Current. This means that interaction between the East Korean Warm Current and periphery of warm eddy makes large in the variation of movement along the east coast of Korean Peninsula. The largest variation of temperature at 250 m depth seemed to be significantly correlated with the East Sea Intermediate Water (ESIW) underlying Ulleung Warm Eddy. It is suggested that the interaction between the ESIW and UWE is active in the mid-depth along the periphery of UWE.
