The structural members under seismic loading actually show inelastic behavior, so the inelastic responses should be calculated for the seismic design of structures or estimating the structural damage level. Although direct time history analysis may calculate the exact dynamic nonlinear responses for given ground motions, this approach involves a high computational cost and long period. Therefore, it should be developed the approach to estimate nonlinear responses for the practical purpose. The artificial earthquake accelerograms were generated to obtain the smoothed responses spectra, and the samples of generated accelerogram for each seismic event was used to examine average nonlinear response spectra. The stabilized response spectra for each earthquake event was used to evaluate the effects of various yield strength ratios, damping values and nonlinear hysteretic models. The approach, which can simply predict the nonlinear seismic responses of structures, was shown in this study.

This paper presents a new approach for the detection of seismic events using accumulated changes on time-frequency domain and variable threshold. To detect seismic P-wave arrivals with rapidness and accuracy, it is that the changes on the time and the frequency domains are simultaneously used. Their changes are parameters appropriated to reflect characteristics of earthquakes over moderate magnitude(${\geq}$ magnitude 4.0) and microearthquakes. In addition, adaptively controlled threshold values can prevent false P-wave detections due to low SNR. We tested our method on real earthquakes those have various magnitudes. The proposed algorithm gives a good detection performance and it is also comparable to STA/LTA algorithm in computational complexity. Computer simulation results shows that the proposed algorithm is superior to the conventional popular algorithm (STA/LTA) in the seismic P-wave detection.

Hydrologic responses to the 4September 2010 $M_W$ 7.1 and 22 February 2011 $M_W$ 6.2 Canterbury earthquakes ranged from near instantaneous co-seismic liquefaction and changes in groundwater levels, to more sustained (days to months) changes in river discharge, spring flow and groundwater level. There was some indication of a sustained change in aquifer properties. This paper presents some of the hydrographs from the September and February events, and compares the response to each event, briefly taking into account the location of the bore relative to each earthquake, together with other factors such as borehole depth. Over the months following the September earthquake, a pattern emerged of relatively short-term responses in the shallow aquifers and in the confined aquifer system, close to the coast. A longer term response appears to have occurred in inland, deep bores, where water levels 12 months after the September event were (in some cases) up to 20 metres higher than would have been expected based on simple modelling (see Figure 3). Some examples of these are highlighted.

Post-earthquake crisis management is a key capability for a country to be able to recover after a major seismic event. Instrumental seismic data transmitted and processed in a very short time can contribute to better management of the emergency and can give insights on the earthquake's impact on a specific area. Romania is a country with a high seismic hazard, mostly due to the Vrancea intermediate-depth earthquakes. The elastic acceleration response spectrum of a seismic motion provides important information on the level of maximum acceleration the buildings were subjected to. Based on new data analysis and knowledge advancements, the acceleration elastic response spectrum for horizontal ground components recommended by the Romanian seismic codes has been evolving over the last six decades. This study aims to propose a framework for post-earthquake warning based on code spectrum exceedances. A comprehensive background analysis was undertaken using strong motion data from previous earthquakes corroborated with observational damage, to prove the method's applicability. Moreover, a case-study for two densely populated Romanian cities (Focsani and Bucharest) is presented, using data from a $5.5M_W$ earthquake (October 28, 2018) and considering the evolution of the three generations of code-based spectral levels for the two cities. Data recorded in free-field and in buildings were analyzed and has confirmed that no structural damage occurred within the two cities. For future strong seismic events, this tool can provide useful information on the effect of the earthquake on structures in the most exposed areas.
On September 12, 2016, the Gyeongju earthquake occurred in the south-eastern region of the Korean peninsula. The event was ranked as the largest magnitude earthquake (=5.8) since instrumental recording was started by the Korean Metrological Administration (KMA) in 1978. The objective of this study is to provide information obtained from the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake and to propose a procedure estimating seismic risk of a typical old RC building for past and potential earthquakes. Ground motions are simulated using the point source model at 4941 grid locations in the Korean peninsula that resulted from the Gyeongju earthquake and from potential future earthquakes with the same hypocenter considering different soil conditions. Nonlinear response history analyses are conducted for each grid location using a three-story gravity-designed reinforced concrete (RC) frame that most closely represents conventional old school and public buildings. Then, contour maps are constructed to present the seismic risk associated with this building for the Gyeongju earthquake and potential future scenario earthquakes. These contour maps can be useful in the development of a mitigation plan for potential earthquake damage to school and public buildings at all grid locations on the Korean peninsula.
Ground motion scaling techniques are actively debated in the earthquake engineering community. Considerations such as what amplitude, over what period range and to what target spectrum are amongst the questions of practical importance. In this paper, the effect of various ground motion scaling approaches are explored using three reinforced concrete prototypical building models of 8, 12 and 20 stories designed to respond nonlinearly under a design level earthquake event in the seismically active Southern California region. Twenty-one recorded earthquake motions are selected using a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and subsequently scaled using four different strategies. These motions are subsequently compared to spectrally compatible motions. The nonlinear response of a planar frameidealized building is evaluated in terms of plasticity distribution, floor level acceleration and uncorrelated acceleration amplification ratio distributions; and interstory drift distributions. The most pronounced response variability observed in association with the scaling method is the extent of higher mode participation in the nonlinear demands.

The objective of the earthquake resistant design of structures is to satisfy on the one side the minimization of damage requirement under earthquakes with high probability of occurrence during the design life and on the other side the no collapse requirement under the design seismic event with low probability of occurrence. The two requirements are satisfied with the minimum strength of substructure as well as the ductile failure mechanism presented in the codes. In this study seismic performance is evaluated with two bridges which have steel box superstructures and T type, II type piers as substructures. In order to satisfy the two requirements redesign of both substructures and steel bearings are carried out.

The $M_w=5.8$ Kyungju (South Korea) earthquake took place on 12 September 2016. This event may cause deformation around Kyungju city, located in the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula. In this study, GPS data was collected from the 17 Korean CORS and processed to determine the deformation. Minimum constraint solutions, to avoid the network distortion, are obtained and an S-transformation is applied to the coordinate difference vector and its covariance matrix for comparisons. In the final step, a statistical test is performed to determine the deformation due to the Kyungju earthquake. Based on the results, it was found that there is no significant deformation around Kyungju city. Hence, it can be said that the re-measurement or re-establishment of the geodetic control points in South Korea is not required.
110 earthquake parameters (origin time, epicentral location and magnitude) were determined from 533 event records between 1905 and 1942 using data mainly from the "Annual Report of the Meteorological Observatory of the Government General of Tyosen" We adopted epicentral coordinates from the original reports for 34 events and from the Japanese Central Meteorological Observatory far another .34 events. We determined epicenters for 37 events using arrival time information from the reports. We adopted 4 epicenters from the International Seismological Summary and I from the Chinese bulletin. To determine the magnitude, we applied Tsuboi (1954) formula which is currently employed by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) for 94 events. For 16 events, we determined magnitude from the reef)reed felt epicentral areal using the correlation equation between known magnitude and felt area.
Earthquake induced landslides have caused tens of thousands of deaths and billions of dollars of damage during the last century alone. Determining the potential seismic hazard presented by statically stable slopes is essential for the evaluation of substantial landslide movement during an earthquake. Newmark's method for estimating landslide displacement under dynamic loading was presented and applied to two case studies. A simplified energy-based method was then be developed to estimate the Newmark's displacement.
