The purpose of this study is to explore ways to improve developing exam questions for Earth science education by analyzing exam trend of Earth science education in the secondary-school teacher employment test (TET, hereafter). For this purpose, we developed an analysis framework to analyze items of Earth science education in the secondary-school TET, and this analysis framework covers required courses for 'theory of Earth science education' of 'Earth science teaching certificate courses'. The analysis framework consists of big categories, assessment domains, and assessment components. We divided system changes in secondary-school TET into 4 types, and analyzed exams of 2014-2018 school year, which is the existing exam system. According to the results, 22-24 points out of 80 have been allotted to Earth science education. Among assessment domains, Earth science Teaching & Learning domain has taken the highest percentage of scores and item numbers, followed by Earth science inquiry, history & philosophy of science, etc. For each domain, we analyzed exam tendencies in detail. Based the results, we suggested ways to improve developing exam questions for Earth science education in the secondary-school TET, and ways to improve curriculum for Earth science education in the teacher education program.
The purpose of this study was to compare of freshmen's cognitive frames about the 'Crisis of the Earth' upon taking the Earth science I course in high school to confirm if they reflect the goal of the curriculum reasonably. Data were collected from 67 freshmen who graduated from high school. All participants were asked to express about the 'Crisis of the Earth' in painting with explanation, then we picked meaningful units from paintings. We analyzed the words and frames presented in the paintings using the Semantic Network Analysis. Result are as follows. First, when both groups' (one that took the course vs. the other that did not take it) built their cognitive frames for the 'crisis of the Earth', they reasonably connected areas that are composed of the global environment and they understood that their relation was constantly changing by interacting each other. Second, when configuring a cognitive frame about the 'crisis of the Earth', both groups reflected the characteristics of interrelationship with human activities. In particular, the group that took the course of Earth Science I fully reflected the goal of the curriculum. It is suggested that students recognize the 'crisis of the Earth' not only from a cosmic perspective bot also from the Earth's interior since most of students have strongly connected it to the phenomenon of the Earth's interior rather than the Earth's outward symptoms. In addition, it is recommended that the Earth science curriculum put more emphasis on understanding the importance of problem-solving of the Earth's crisis.

This study compared and analyzed the contents of secondary earth science curriculum in Mongolia and South Korea to check the contents of earth science education in both countries and to prepare basic data necessary for future earth science curriculum revisions. The research questions of this study are: first, to understand the changes and current operating conditions of earth science curriculum in both countries, to compare and analyze with other foreign cases, and second, to compare and analyze the contents of earth science and curriculum in both countries. The TIMSS evaluation framework is used to compare and analyze the earth science-related contents included in the science curriculum of middle schools. For analyzing the contents of high school, the contents of NGSS in the United States and the earth science curriculum contents of high schools in South Korea were mixed and the analysis frameworks were created and validated by experts. As a result of the study, countries that follow the Russian-style education system did not organize and operate earth science as an independent science subject, and deal with earth science-related content in the natural geography area of the geography subject. The earth science contents covered in middle school science curriculum in both countries, 18 of the 27 content elements of the TIMSS content analysis framework were matched in Mongolia and 20 in South Korea. In high school curriculum, the contents of earth science in Mongolia were described more briefly and not covered than in South Korea. In particular, the Mongolian geography curriculum dealt with many environmental issues. The emphasis on the operation method of the earth science curriculum in Mongolia and the contents related to the environment can be used as a reference when developing an interdisciplinary integrated curriculum of science and social studies in South Korea.
This study is focused to characteristics of earth region vocabularies used in 7th curricula science textbooks for 3rd to 6th grades of elementary school. The numbers of earth region vocabularies are generally increased from the lower to the higher grade textbooks, ‘science’ and ‘experiments and observation’. In ‘science’ textbooks, numbers and use frequencies of earth region vocabularies are predominant in astronomy and atmospheric science vocabularies. Meanwhile, in ‘experiment and observation’, domains related with astronomy have relatively more numbers of the vocabularies but domains related with geology have higher use frequencies of those vocabularies relative to domains related with another areas. ‘Strata’ and ‘fossil’ of geology vocabularies, ‘air temperature’ of atmospheric science vocabularies and ‘sun’ and ‘planet’ of astronomy vocabularies are commonly the highest frequent in the use for science textbooks and experiment and observation. In the both books, earth region vocabularies are derived from 70% to 80% words of Chinese, below 10% of pure Korean, and rest of other languages. Additionally, cases of pure Korean vocabularies unpacked from professional nomenclatures, ones without previous explanations and multiple vocabulary applications to same phenomena are observed in the both books. Synthesizing above results, it is suggested that the reconsideration of domains related with each area of earth science and vocabulary uses assigned to above cases is necessary, in possible.

The purpose of this study was to suggest the earth science lesson model based on the creativity character education. To conduct this study, the curriculum revision in 2009 was analyzed by the causal mapping method. One after another, the creativity character education and earth system education were analyzed by the same method. Through as mentioned above, the key words which have relating concepts each other were picked out. Lastly, the key words were connected and compounded for the earth science lesson model based on the creativity character education. The model indicates that the earth science lesson based on the creativity character education requires the reconstructs of the processing and contents of the lesson. In other words, the teaching/learning must be progressed as corresponding between scientific facts and mental recognition, scientific concepts and compounding thinking skill, scientific laws and reconstructing thinking skill. In contents were reconstructed as relating to knowledge, creativity, characters and guidance counseling. The results of this study suggested the earth science lesson model based on the creativity character education needs developing and applying teaching/learning materials and managing discussing and cooperative learning.
Some fine specimens of Annulariopsis bunkeiensis were collected from two fossil sites of the Amisan Formation of Nampo Group distributed in the Jogaegol, Boryeng City, Chungnam Province. According to our detailed study from our new material, the leaves of A. bunkeiensis are not mucronate, but emarginate at their apices. Accordingly, we revised the diagnostic characters given by Kimura and Kim (1988) mainly in regard to the leaf apex.
The purpose of this study was to explore middle school students' perceptions about earth systems in order to implement the 2009 revised national science curriculum effectively. A total of 1219 students participated in the survey and asked to determine their basic understandings about earth systems, self-reported knowledge level, and perceived significance level of the 23 earth systems concepts (contents). In relation to students' basic understandings about earth system, approximately 67% students reported that they didn't know about the term of the earth system. Atmosphere and hydrosphere were highly perceived as major component of earth system. However, cryoshere was perceived to be least familiar by the subjects. The findings also showed that students' self-reported knowledge level and significance level about major ESU#4, #5, #6 related concepts (contents) were significantly different by gender. Most of male students were more knowledgeable and perceived more significant than female students. Regarding the difference of the perceived significance level by grade, 10 out of 23 concepts were significantly different. Some implications for implementing the revised curriculum and school fields were discussed.
The purpose of this study is to investigate elementary school science gifted students' perceptions about Earth systems and environmental problems. A total of 28 students in the attached center for science gifted education to the university participated in this study. Through the survey, participating students were asked to respond to their self-reported knowledge level, the perceived danger levels, certainty, and tangibility of the selected 13 Earth environmental problems. The DAET (Draw-An-Earth Test)-Checklist were developed and used to analyze the images of the Earth drawn by students. Additional interviews were conducted to clarify the meanings and components of students' image. Results indicated that a total of 80 components regarding Earth systems, 11 components of Earth systems interaction, and 4 components related to Earth systems literacy were identified through the DAET-Checklist and additional interviews. Regarding the students' self-reported knowledge level, they reported that they were most knowledgeable about air pollution, global warming, and water pollution. and they also recognized global warming, air pollution, and water pollution as the most dangerous problem. Results indicated that participants were certain that acid rain, air pollution, and water pollution were problematic, and that acid rain, air pollution, and forest desertification were tangible issues. It is anticipated that this study contributes to understanding the elementary school science gifted students' perceptions toward the selected Earth systems and environmental problems.
This study is a report of the collaborative action research which has been conducted between a Korean earth science teacher and science education researcher. A two-year long action research effort was made in order to improve the teacher’s earth science classrooms in pursuit of constructivist principles of learning. The process of the action research was described with the aim of increasing the awareness of science teachers and science education researchers regarding action research. Quantitative evidence was presented to indicate the effectiveness of the collaborative action research in creating constructivist learning environments in the classrooms. The process and quantitative evidence from the action research permitted a consideration of implications for future efforts to improve science classrooms.
