Satellite optical communication has gained significant attention owing to its many quality features (e.g., a larger bandwidth, license free spectrum, higher data rate, and better security) compared to satellite microwave communication. Various experiments have been performed during many space missions to demonstrate and characterize inter-satellite links, downlinks, and uplinks. Korea has also planned to establish an experimental communication system using a geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellite and the Geochang station as an optical ground station for low Earth orbit (LEO)-to-ground optical relay links. In this study, the performance of inter-satellite communication links and downlinks was investigated for the new Korean experimental communication system in terms of link margin, bit error rate (BER), and channel capacity. In particular, the performance of the inter-satellite links was analyzed based on the receiving apertures and the transmitting power, while that of the downlink was analyzed in terms of atmospheric turbulence conditions and transmitting power. Finally, we discussed two system parameters of receiving aperture and transmitting power to meet the three criteria of link margin, BER, and channel capacity.

Scientific CubeSat with Instruments for Global Magnetic Fields and Radiations (SIGMA) is a 3-U size CubeSat that will be operated in low earth orbit (LEO). The SIGMA communication system uses a very high frequency (VHF) band for uplink and an ultra high frequency (UHF) band for downlink. Both frequencies belong to an amateur band. The ground station that communicates with SIGMA is located at Kyung Hee Astronomical Observatory (KHAO). For reliable communication, we carried out a laboratory (LAB) test and far-field tests between the CubeSat and a ground station. In the field test, we considered test parameters such as attenuation, antenna deployment, CubeSat body attitude, and Doppler frequency shift in transmitting commands and receiving data. In this paper, we present a communication performance test of SIGMA, a link budget analysis, and a field test process. We also compare the link budget with the field test results of transmitting commands and receiving data.

The propagation prediction model of the earth-space communication link used as an international standard was used to calculate and analyze the total losses on the communication path. The standard definition and scope of ITU-R Rec. were analyzed for each parameter(rain, scintillation, atmospheric gas, clouds) used to calculate the total loss. The total losses were calculated using the standard model for each parameter and the statistical data provided by ITU-R, and the results were analyzed using the validation examples data. The rain losses were calculated using long-term local rainfall attenuation statistics data measured in the region, and compared with the calculation results using a rainfall map in the ITU-R Recommendation. The data of Cheollian satellites for the L-Band and Ka-Band were used to calculate the rainfall attenuation. In the range of 0.01% to 0.1%, it was found to have a greater attenuation slope when using local data than attenuation by the model of ITU-R.

In Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks, satellites operate fast and the inter-satellite link change period is short. In order to sense the spectrum state in LEO satellite networks in real-time, a space-based satellite network intelligent spectrum sensing algorithm based on artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed, while Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites are introduced to make fast and effective judgments on the spectrum state of LEO satellites by using their stronger arithmetic power. Firstly, the visibility constraints between LEO satellites and GEO satellites are analyzed to derive the inter-satellite link building matrix and complete the inter-satellite link situational awareness. Secondly, an ANN-based energy detection (ANN-ED) algorithm is proposed based on the traditional energy detection algorithm and artificial neural network. The ANN module is used to determine the spectrum state and optimize the traditional energy detection algorithm. GEO satellites are used to fuse the information sensed by LEO satellites and then give the spectrum decision, thereby realizing the inter-satellite spectrum state sensing. Finally, the sensing quality is evaluated by the analysis of sensing delay and sensing energy consumption. The simulation results show that our proposed algorithm has lower complexity, the sensing delay and sensing energy consumption compared with the traditional energy detection method.

In recent space industry, It has become a major trend to launch lunar exploration satellites to extend activities in the deep space environment. In this paper, a link budget analysis is carried out for the lunar exploration satellite. One of the major difference between the lunar satellite and LEO spacecraft lies in the orbit parameters. The vast distance between spacecraft and the Earth station imposes a challenging task for the spacecraft designers in terms of achieving stable communication link budget. The satellite tool kit software has been adopted to simulate the lunar exploring satellite. The relative distance between the spacecraft and the ground stations are tracked and the communication link budget is calculated accordingly.
This paper designs a data link between a Lunar Orbiter (LO) and an Earth Station (ES), and analyzes the downlink performance of a space communications system for lunar exploration, conforming to the recommendations by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS). The results provided in the paper can be useful references for the design of reliable communication link for the Korean lunar exploration in the near future.
Today's communication needs the super high-speed data transmission system to send many data rapidly, correctly, and simultaneously because of the increase of internet use, the demand of multimedia service and so on. Before long, the super high data service will be offered us by a satellite called platform which will be located at stratosphere of 20[km]over earth. It is possible to build the optical wireless communication networks which have the high data-tarrying capacity because this system use a laser. But, there are many problems to overcome because it make use of the atmospheric space as transmission channel. In this paper, therefore, we study up on the relations of data rates, bit error rates, and turbulent effects of atmosphere to present the effects of atmosphere to present the effects of atmospheric turbulence on the optical satcom link.

Generally, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites are used to collect image or video from earth's surface. The collected data are stored on-board and/or transmitted to the main ground station directly or via polar ground station using terrestrial line. Today, an intersatellite link between a LEO and a GEO satellite allows transmission of the collected data to the main ground station through the GEO satellite. In this study, an approach for a continuous communication starting from LEO through GEO to ground station is proposed by determining the optimum ground station locations. In doing so, diverse ground stations help to determine the GEO orbit as well. Cross-correlation of the long term daily rainfall averages are multiplied with the logarithmic correlation of the sites to calculate the joint correlation of the diverse ground station locations. The minimum values of this joint correlation yield the optimum locations of the ground stations for Q/V-band communication and satellite control operations. Results for several case studies are listed.

Satellite based communication is networks in which users in a wide area can access without wired-based ground infrastructure. In particular, the need is emerging due to the recent Ukraine-Russia war. Satellite network systems acquire data that is difficult to observe on Earth as well as communication networks and are also used for research and development, which allows additional data to be produced. However, due to the nature of communication networks existing in outer space, certain vulnerabilities are revealed, and attacks based on them can be exposed. In this paper, we analyze vulnerabilities that may arise due to the nature of satellite communication networks and describes current research, countermeasures, and future research directions.

Telemetry link is dynamic communication link that antenna gain and polarization are varying with the movement of the airplane. In this paper we calculated the antenna gain, polarization mismatch using the flight trajectory, motion of the airplane and 3D antenna pattern. And we modeled the multipath environment to the 2-Ray spherical earth reflection geometry, estimated the received signal strength when the narrow beam antenna received the RF signal transmitted from the airplane. Also we performed the flight test and after comparing measured value with the estimated value, we confirmed to almost coincide with each other.
