The active earth pressure on the retaining wall is reduced by 3-Dimensional effects of the ground. Therefore, the test was focused on reducing the earth pressure on the retaining wall by inserting the vertical reinforcement in the backfill ground to develope the 3-Dimensional effects. Model tests in sand were peformed to measure the 3-Dimensional effects of the vertical reinforcement on the active earth pressure and its distribution and results were compared with the theories. The size of the vertical reinforcement, the geometry of the backfill space, and the wall friction of vertical reinforcement were varied. It was observed that the active earth pressure and its distribution on the underground structure were affected by the size of the vertical reforcements and wall friction.
The usage of Integral abutment bridges has been increased worldwide because of reducing bridge maintenance costs and resisting seismic loads. Although these attributes make the integral abutment bridge an increasingly popular choice, back-abutment interaction issues remain unresolved. Hence, the earth pressure behavior of an integral abutment bridge having 90 m long PSC beam bridge for the first time in Korea was analyzed by conducting long term monitoring in this study. Based on this study, the results were as follows; the ratio of maximum passive movement to the abutment height (H) of 0.0027 and the maximum passive earth pressure coefficient of 4.8 were developed at 0.82H from the bottom of the abutment during summer season. During winter season, the ratio of maximum active movement to H of 0.0011 and the maximum active earth pressure coefficient of 0.7 were developed at the same location as in summer season. The new earth pressure distributions having a trapezoid type were proposed based on this study.

As the recent structure construction is constructed as a large-scale and deep underground excavation in close proximity to the building, the installation of retaining wall and supporters (Struts) has become complicated, and the number of supporters to avoid interference of the structural slab has increased. This construction process becomes a factor that causes an increase in construction joints of a structure, leakage and an increase in wall cracks. In addition, this reduced the durability and workability of the structure and led to an increase in the construction period. This study planned to dismantle the two struts simultaneously as a plan to reduce the construction joints, and corrected the earth pressure by assuming the reaction force value by the initial earth pressure and the measured data as the response ratio. After recalculating the corrected earth pressure through the iterative trial method, it was verified by numerical analysis that simultaneous disassembly of the two struts was possible. As a result of numerical analysis applying the final corrected earth pressure, the measured value for the design reaction force was found to be up to 197%. It was analyzed that this was due to the effect of grouting on the ground and some underestimation of the ground characteristics during design. Based on the result of calculating the corrected earth pressure in consideration of the response ratio performed in this study, it was proved analytically that the improvement of the brace dismantling process is possible. In addition, it was considered that the overall construction period could be shortened by reducing cracks due to leakage and improving workability by reducing construction joints. However, to apply the proposed method of this study, it is judged that sufficient estimations are necessary as there are differences in ground conditions, temporary facilities, and reinforcement methods for each site.

Scaled model tests were performed to explore the influence of eccentric load and lateral earth pressure on tunnel behavior and their results were verified through numerical analyses. As a method for reducing the eccentric load acting on tunnel, an eccentric supporting system (ESS) was proposed and its applicability was investigated. Experimental results showed that displacement decreased overall and the load inducing initial cracks increased as the eccentric supporting system was applied. The maximum eccentric vertical load which impacted the stability of tunnel was also increased. The test results on the influence of lateral earth pressure on tunnel behavior showed that the general aspect of displacement and crack growth changed significantly depending on the coefficient of lateral earth pressure. In addition, the weak zone In view of stability varied as well.

In this study, an Assembled Earth Retaining Wall (AER wall) is newly proposed. The AER wall combined stabilizing piles names as Back Supporting Beam is developed to improve stability and economics of existing retaining walls. For the verification of the AER wall, the field model tests and 3D numerical analyses were performed. As a result of the field tests, it can be confirmed that the earth pressure is considerably reduced compared with the L-shaped retaining wall. Also, the 3D numerical analyses show that AER wall is at least 29.85% more effective at lateral displacement than general L-shaped retaining wall. In other words, AER wall is expected to raise economical efficiency because of excellent mechanical stability of Back Supporting Beam.

MiStrut is a new method to establish structural stability in designing braced excavations by making a rigid connection between top-level steel beams and soldier beams. MiStrut has a function of working as a strut as well as supporting cover plates of top-level steel beams. The structural mechanism of MiStrut is supposed to reduce flexural deformation of soldier beams, which may lead to reduced lateral earth pressures behind excavation. In this research, for verification of the performance of MiStrut, shear-wave velocities of subsurface soil before and after excavation was compared. The rigid connection of main girder beams with soldir beams reduced shear-wave velocity by 67% and lateral earth pressures by 90%, which indicates that MiStrut is effective development in reducing lateral earth pressures on braced excavation.

Recently, the construction method of high pressure jet-grouting is in wide-use, for the purpose of structure foundation ground, reinforcing of ground behind propped retaining walls and cut-off in order to perform safe construction of underground excavation work. This study was performed a serious of tests of field permeability and unconfined compressive strength upon ground improved established on the ground behind propped retaining walls and examined proper jet mechanism by changing the construction parameter value of high pressure jet-grouting. In addition, we got the conclusion like the followings as a result of inspecting the condition of earth pressure distribution and deformation, using elasto-plastic method and FEM. 1. In that characteristics of strength of ground improved, with the same condition of construction parameter, unconfined compressive strength of sand gravel is shown bigger than that of silty sand by about 1.6 times and cut-off effect is shown to have effect of reducing the permeability of original ground by about 10$^{-2}$ ~10$^{-3}$ cm/s. 2. As a result of analysis of figures of horizontal displacing quantity of propped retaining walls materials regarding before and after High pressure jet- grouting through FEM, the reducing quantity of 0.1~0.3mm in maximum horizontal displacement is shown.

The RAR (Reinforced Abutment for Railways) is an economical abutment to reduce the settlement of a transitional zone and horizontal displacement of an abutment by constructing backfill before the abutment. In this paper, the performance of the RAR depending on the pile installation was evaluated using 2D (Dimensional) finite element analysis and compared with the existing abutment (with 5 rows pile). Numerical analysis showed that increasing pile installation is more effective in reducing horizontal displacement and earth pressure than settlement of the transitional zone. The horizontal displacement and earth pressure of the RAR was approximately 26~37% and 59~83% compared to the existing abutment by changing the pile installation. More pile installation led to a greater reduction of the horizontal displacement and earth pressure of the RAR. In addition, the horizontal earth pressure of RAR is influenced considerably by the reinforcement, pile, foundation, and stiffness of the ground.

In Top-Down construction for underground structures, the placement of slab as a horizontal supporting member against lateral earth pressure is an important process in determining construction time and cost. Usually, a reinforced concrete perimeter girder distributes concentrated lateral loads from earth retaining structures such as Cast-in-place (CIP) piles. By combining the function of the R/C perimeter girder and horizontal slabs, the Opened Slab Method is efficient for reducing construction time by elimination of time-consuming formwork for traditional perimeter girders. The structural performance of the method is also discussed in this paper.
In the FMAS system the effect of iron on alumina solubility in orthopyroxene has been determined by experiments with crystalline starting mixtures of garnet and orthopyroxene of known initial compositions at 20 kb, 975$^{\circ}C$ and 25 kb, 1,200$^{\circ}C$. These data have been modeled to develop a thermodynamic method for the calculation of Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ in orthopyroxene as a function of P, T and composition. The direct application of the alumina solubility data in the MAS system to natural assemblages could lead to significant overestimation of pressure, probably by about 5kb for the relatively common garnet-lherzolites with abot 25 mol per cent Ca + Fe$^{2+}$ in garnet and about 1 wt. per cent Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ in orthopyroxene since the effect of Fe is similar to that of Ca and Cr$^{3+}$in reducing the alumina solubility in orthopyroxene in equilibrum with garnet relative to that in the MAS system.
